The tafsīr in brief

Allah swears by the Clear Book that He sent it down in a blessed night, a night in which every matter of wisdom is made distinct, as a command from Him, as a mercy from your Lord, the Hearing, the Knowing, Lord of the heavens and earth and what is between them, if you would be certain.

• Approach this opening ready to receive guidance: the oath by the clear Book leads to a warning meant to show people what benefits and harms them.
• When the future feels uncertain, remember that provision, lifespan, and the year's affairs are under Allah's command, not outside His knowledge.
• Treat revealed guidance as a mercy to use in your decisions, not merely information to collect.
• Let devotion be directed to Allah alone. Neither the vastness of creation nor the weight of ancestral tradition places anything beyond His lordship.

But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke enveloping the people; this is a painful punishment. They will say, 'Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed, we believe.' How can they be reminded when a clear messenger had already come to them, yet they turned away? But when We remove the punishment a little, they return to disbelief. The Day We strike with the greatest assault, We will indeed take retribution.

• When guidance challenges you, examine it honestly rather than escaping into distraction or dismissing the person who brings it.
• Take warnings seriously before suffering forces your attention; Quraysh’s experience shows how fragile apparent security can be.
• Carry the prayer and commitment of difficult days into easier ones. Relief should not become a reason to abandon what you promised.
• Keep accountability in view when making choices: Allah’s warning of retribution calls for a serious response, not complacency.

Before them We tried the people of Firʿawn when a noble messenger came to them, saying, 'Render to me the servants of Allah; indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger, and be not haughty toward Allah.' When they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all together, leaving them as a lesson for those who followed, and We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment, and We chose them, with knowledge, over the worlds, and gave them of signs a clear trial.

• Receive guidance by examining its truth, not by defending your status. Mūsā brought a trustworthy message and clear proof, yet arrogance stood in the way.
• When facing hostility, seek Allah’s protection, avoid unnecessary confrontation, and follow His guidance. The presence of danger does not mean obedience has failed.
• Do not confuse comfort with lasting security. Use what you have responsibly rather than treating possessions or position as protection from accountability.
• Respond to deliverance and favour with humility rather than entitlement. Allah rescued the oppressed, but their chosen status and signs did not remove the reality of testing.

Indeed, these [Makkans] are saying, 'There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected. Bring back our forefathers, if you should be truthful.' Indeed, the tree of Zaqqūm is food for the sinful, like the boiling of scalding water. It will be said, 'Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire, then pour over his head from the punishment of scalding water. Taste! Indeed, you are the honoured, the noble!' — mockingly, for indeed this is what you used to doubt.

• Do not make accepting truth depend on conditions of your own choosing. Learn from earlier deniers instead of assuming their fate could never concern you.
• Let the purpose of creation shape your choices: everyone faces judgement, and family connections cannot replace dependence on Allah's mercy.
• Take the warning about meeting Allah seriously. These descriptions of punishment call for examining your words and actions rather than dismissing accountability.
• Do not confuse worldly honour with safety before Allah. Respond humbly to the warning now rather than treating your own importance as protection.

Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place, among gardens and springs, dressed in fine silk and brocade, facing one another. Thus it will be, and We will marry them to fair women with large, beautiful eyes. They will call therein for every fruit, safe and secure. They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of the Hellfire, as bounty from your Lord; that is the great attainment. So We have only made it [the Qur'an] easy in your tongue that they might be reminded.

• Let hope for lasting security strengthen your commitment to fearing Allah and fulfilling your duties now. Paradise offers safety that present surroundings cannot guarantee.
• Broaden your picture of Allah's generosity: the passage brings together beautiful clothing, companionship, and provision without fear of loss. Reflect on the giver, not only the gifts.
• Measure success by the lasting outcome, not merely by temporary comfort. Eternal life and protection from Hellfire are the great attainment, received as Allah's bounty.
• Respond to the accessible reminder rather than remaining a spectator. The closing verses move from an invitation to take heed to the sober instruction to watch and wait.
