Asking Allah

Du'ās, arranged by the moment you need them

Du'ā is simply asking. The Prophet ﷺ taught wording for the ordinary moments of a day — leaving the house, sitting to eat, lying down, worrying at three in the morning. Each one below is given with its Arabic, a simple way to say it, what it actually means, and where it comes from.

When the chest is tight and you do not know what to do

When worry and sadness will not lift

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijāl

O Allah, I take shelter with You from worry and grief, from being unable and being lazy, from stinginess and cowardice, from being crushed by debt and overpowered by people.

Anytime the weight will not shift; the Prophet ﷺ said it often. · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6369

When something serious has happened

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ رَبُّ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

Lā ilāha illa-llāhul-ʿAẓīmul-Ḥalīm, lā ilāha illa-llāhu Rabbul-ʿArshil-ʿAẓīm, lā ilāha illa-llāhu Rabbus-samāwāti wa Rabbul-arḍi wa Rabbul-ʿArshil-Karīm

There is no god but Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, Lord of the Noble Throne.

At a moment of real distress — the Prophet ﷺ said this one at such times. · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6346; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2730

The call of Yūnus عليه السلام, from inside the dark

Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu minaẓ-ẓālimīn

There is no god but You. Glory be to You. I have been one of the wrongdoers. He was answered from three layers of darkness, and this is the wording the Qur'an records.

When you feel you brought the trouble on yourself and see no way out. · Qur'an 21:87

Ḥasbunā-llāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl

Allah is enough for us, and the best One to depend on. This is what the believers said when they were warned that armies had gathered against them.

When you are outnumbered, threatened or afraid of what people will do. · Qur'an 3:173

Read it in the muṣḥaf

Calling on Him by the two names of life

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ

Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth

O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all, by Your mercy I call for help. Al-Ḥayy is the One whose life never ends; al-Qayyūm is the One holding everything else up.

When trouble presses on you. · Sunan at-Tirmidhī 3524

Morning, evening, and over those you love

Nothing harms with this name said over it

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Bismillāhil-ladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa-smihi shay'un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā', wa Huwas-Samīʿul-ʿAlīm

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the sky can cause harm; and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Three times in the morning and three in the evening. · 3×, morning and evening · Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5088; Sunan at-Tirmidhī 3388

When you stop somewhere unfamiliar

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-llāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq

I take shelter in the perfect words of Allah from the harm of what He has made.

When you stop at a place on a journey, or feel uneasy somewhere. · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2708

Said over children

أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ

Uʿīdhukumā bi-kalimāti-llāhit-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynin lāmmah

I place you both in the shelter of the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every crawling thing, and from every eye that means harm.

Over your children — the Prophet ﷺ said it over al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn. · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 3371

Being content with Him, morning and evening

رَضِيتُ بِاللّٰهِ رَبًّا، وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا، وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ نَبِيًّا

Raḍītu billāhi Rabban, wa bil-islāmi dīnan, wa bi-Muḥammadin ﷺ nabiyyā

I am content with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my way, and with Muhammad ﷺ as my Prophet.

Three times in the morning and three in the evening. · 3×, morning and evening · Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5072

Leaving home, eating, travelling, the masjid

Stepping out of the house

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ

Bismillāh, tawakkaltu ʿala-llāh, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh

In the name of Allah. I put my trust in Allah. There is no power to change anything and no strength except with Allah.

As you leave home. · Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5095; Sunan at-Tirmidhī 3426

Coming back in

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللّٰهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللّٰهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

Bismillāhi walajnā, wa bismillāhi kharajnā, wa ʿala-llāhi Rabbinā tawakkalnā

In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we depend.

As you enter your home; then greet the people inside with salām. · Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5096

Before you eat

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، وَإِنْ نَسِيَ: بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ

Bismillāh — and if you forgot: Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirih

In the name of Allah. If you only remember partway through: in the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end.

When the meal is finished

الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī aṭʿamanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah

All praise is for Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me with no power or strength of my own.

Setting off on a journey

Subḥānalladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa innā ilā Rabbinā la-munqalibūn

Glory to the One who put this under our control — we could never have managed it ourselves — and truly it is to our Lord that we are returning. The Prophet ﷺ said these words of the Qur'an when he settled onto his mount.

When you sit into the car, or the seat on a plane or train. · Qur'an 43:13–14; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1342

Read it in the muṣḥaf

Walking into the masjid

اللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Allāhumma-ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik

O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Entering, right foot first. · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 713

Walking out of the masjid

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

Allāhumma innī as'aluka min faḍlik

O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.

Leaving, left foot first. · Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 713

When it rains

اللّٰهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfiʿā

O Allah, make it rain that brings good.

As the rain falls. · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1032

Keeping the count

Short lines you repeat — subḥānAllāh, astaghfirullāh, sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ — live with the counter, so you can keep a daily total.
