Leaving home, eating, the masjid, rain

Du'ās through the day

An ordinary day has more moments of asking in it than most people realise: stepping out of the door, sitting down to eat, walking into the masjid, watching it rain. Each has short wording the Prophet ﷺ taught.

Stepping out of the house

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ

Bismillāh, tawakkaltu ʿala-llāh, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh

In the name of Allah. I put my trust in Allah. There is no power to change anything and no strength except with Allah.

Coming back in

Bismillāh — and if you forgot: Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirih

In the name of Allah. If you only remember partway through: in the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end.

Before the first bite. · Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3767; Sunan at-Tirmidhī 1858

When the meal is finished

الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هٰذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī aṭʿamanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah

As the rain falls. · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1032

How and when to say them

None of these takes more than a few seconds. Learn one at a time — the one for leaving the house is the usual place to start.

Every du'ā above can be heard aloud. Where the words are Qur'an, the Arabic comes from the Quran.com API and is shown exactly as served, with a link into the muṣḥaf.
