The last words of the night and the first of the morning

Du'ā before sleeping and on waking

The Prophet ﷺ taught wording for lying down and for opening your eyes again. Āyat al-Kursī is part of the night: whoever recites it before sleeping is guarded until morning.

Āyat al-Kursī

Whoever recites it when going to bed has a guard from Allah over him and no devil can come near him until morning — as the Prophet ﷺ confirmed.

Once, in bed. · Qur'an 2:255; Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2311

The first thing you say when you wake

الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amātanā wa ilayhin-nushūr

All praise is for Allah, who gave us life after having taken it away, and to Him is the rising.

On waking. · Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6312

How and when to say them

Say the sleeping wording as the last thing before you drift off, and the waking wording before you get out of bed.

Every du'ā above can be heard aloud. Where the words are Qur'an, the Arabic comes from the Quran.com API and is shown exactly as served, with a link into the muṣḥaf.
