The tafsīr in brief

Allah has not made for any man two hearts within him, nor made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers, nor made your adopted sons your true sons — that is merely a saying of your mouths, but Allah speaks the truth and guides to the right way. The opening āyāt dismantle three pre-Islamic fictions in a single breath, insisting that reality and mere speech are not the same thing.

• When pressure challenges your obedience, let revelation direct your actions and entrust the outcome to Allāh. Trust accompanies following His guidance.
• Keep family descriptions truthful without withholding belonging or care. Preserve known lineage, and do not treat an unknown father as a reason to exclude someone.
• Combine justice with mercy: distinguish mistakes from deliberate wrongdoing, honour established family rights, and retain kindness toward close associates.
• Treat commitments concerning faith as responsibilities to fulfil, not merely words to say. The solemn prophetic covenant leads directly to accountability for truth.

Remember Allah's favour upon you when armies came against you and We sent a wind and hosts you did not see; when eyes shifted with fear and hearts reached the throats, and you thought about Allah various thoughts. The surah preserves the psychological weight of the siege before crediting the eventual relief entirely to Allah's unseen intervention.

• Remember Allah's help without minimizing how hard the trial was. The passage records both overwhelming fear and relief through means the believers could not fully see.
• When pressure rises, examine your excuses honestly and take your commitments seriously. Escaping responsibility cannot place your life beyond Allah's control.
• Offer real support rather than discouraging others or claiming credit afterward. Follow the Prophet's ﷺ example of patient effort and remembrance during difficulty.
• Do not treat hardship as proof that Allah's promise has failed. Hold to truthful commitment, while remembering that judgment and the acceptance of repentance belong to Allah.
• When vulnerability gives way to security and possessions, recognize Allah's power rather than treating the outcome as entirely your own achievement.

Among the believers are men true to what they pledged to Allah — some have fulfilled their vow even to death, and some await their turn, and they have not changed in the least. Set against those who wavered, the surah names the steadfastness of companions who had vowed before Badr or the Trench to stand firm no matter the outcome.

• Do not treat difficulty as proof that trusting Allāh was a mistake. Remember that trials can accompany the path of faith.
• Measure commitment by whether you keep your word when it becomes costly, not simply by how confidently you first make a promise.
• If your greatest test has not yet come, use the waiting time to remain faithful rather than quietly weakening your commitment.
• Take unfaithfulness seriously without giving up hope of repentance. Accountability and Allāh’s mercy both belong in your understanding of this passage.

The Prophet ﷺ is told to give his wives a choice: if they desire the life of this world and its adornment, he will release them honourably, but if they desire Allah, His Messenger ﷺ and the Home of the Hereafter, Allah has prepared a great reward for those among them who do good. They are told they are not like any other women; if they are mindful of Allah, they should not be soft in speech, and are commanded to remain settled in their homes, establish prayer, give zakāh and obey Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, for Allah only wishes to remove impurity from the people of the household and purify them completely. The passage then names ten qualities shared by believing men and believing women, promising them forgiveness and a great reward.

• When comfort competes with a lasting commitment, weigh the Hereafter as well as immediate ease. The passage also models dignity rather than humiliation when offering separation.
• Treat an honored position as a responsibility to improve conduct, not as protection from accountability. Here, elevated standing is joined to serious warnings, generous reward and careful speech.
• Give spiritual growth a place in everyday home life through prayer, giving, obedience and attention to revealed guidance; purification is connected to lived practice.
• Build a balanced practice of faith rather than relying on one virtue alone. Men and women alike are addressed through inward devotion, honest conduct, self-restraint and remembrance.

When Zayd no longer had need of his wife, Allah married her to the Prophet ﷺ so that there would be no discomfort among believers regarding the wives of their adopted sons once divorced — and Muḥammad ﷺ is not the father of any man among you, but the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets.

• When a clear decision from Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ conflicts with your preference, examine your preference rather than treating obedience as optional.
• Keep affection and ancestry distinct: Zayd رضي الله عنه was beloved by the Prophet ﷺ, but that bond did not justify replacing his true lineage.
• Do not turn a familiar social taboo into a religious prohibition. This marriage showed that what people criticized could be lawful and ordained by Allāh.
• Treat conveying Allāh’s message as a trust: fear of people’s reactions should not make you withhold what you have been entrusted to convey.

Believers are told to remember Allah with much remembrance and glorify Him morning and evening, for He sends blessings upon them through His angels to bring them out of darkness into light. The Prophet ﷺ is then described as sent as a witness, a bringer of good news and a warner, and as one who calls to Allah by His permission and as a lamp spreading light — instructed to give the believers the good news of great bounty from Allah and not to obey the disbelievers and hypocrites, but to leave off harming them and rely on Allah.

• Make morning and afternoon regular occasions for glorifying Allah, while also bringing remembrance into ordinary activities throughout the day.
• When you need reassurance, remember both Allah's present mercy and the peace and noble reward He promises believers.
• Receive the Prophet's ﷺ guidance as a whole: let its good news nurture hope, its warnings awaken responsibility, and its light direct you toward Allah.
• Do not make an easy life a condition for staying faithful. Hold to Allah's promise of bounty without yielding to opposition, and entrust your affairs to Him.

Believers are told that if they marry believing women and divorce them before touching them, there is no waiting period upon them to count, and they should be given a suitable release. The Prophet ﷺ is then told what has been made lawful for him specifically regarding wives, in a ruling distinct from that given to the believers generally, so that there should be no discomfort for him ﷺ, for Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

• When a marriage ends, do not mistake the absence of a waiting period for the absence of responsibility: provision and gracious treatment still matter.
• Before applying a religious allowance to yourself, check whom it addresses. Permissions exclusive to the Prophet ﷺ do not remove the obligations placed on other believers.
• Having flexibility need not mean using it to the fullest. The Prophet’s ﷺ continued equal division of time offers a lesson in considerate treatment.
• Treat household decisions as matters of accountability to Allah, not merely personal preference: He knows hidden feelings and observes outward choices.

Believers are told not to linger in the Prophet's ﷺ houses beyond need, and to ask his wives for anything from behind a partition, since that is purer for both hearts; his wives, daughters and the believing women are told to draw their outer garments over themselves so they may be recognised and not troubled.

• Respect privacy without waiting for someone to show discomfort. Pair outward courtesy with awareness that Allah knows private intentions as well as public behaviour.
• Honouring the Prophet ﷺ has a positive side and a protective side: ask Allah to bless him and grant him peace, and guard against speech that abuses him.
• Do not pass along an accusation simply because someone else started it. Transmitting false claims can itself become a means of shaming an innocent person.
• Read the clothing guidance alongside the condemnation of unjust harm: concern for modesty and protection does not turn harassment into something acceptable.

If the hypocrites, those with sickness in their hearts, and those who spread false rumours in Madīnah do not desist, Allah will surely incite the Prophet ﷺ against them, after which they will not remain his neighbours there except briefly — cursed wherever found and seized and slain in a manner that has been Allah's practice with those who came before.

• Do not turn an alarming claim into a reported fact: fabricated news can unsettle people who already face real danger.
• Treat a warning as a reason to stop harmful behaviour, not as something to ignore until consequences arrive.
• Read severe consequences together with their stated condition; do not separate them from the persistent wrongdoing being addressed.
• Let the reminder of Allah’s unchanging way challenge the assumption that wrongdoing can be dismissed simply because it happens in your own community.

People ask the Prophet ﷺ about the Hour, but he ﷺ is told to say that its knowledge is only with Allah, who may make it near. On the Day the disbelievers' faces are turned about in the Fire, they will say, 'Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger,' and, 'Our Lord, we obeyed our leaders and our elders, and they led us astray from the way,' asking for them to be given double punishment and cursed greatly.

• Do not turn uncertainty about the Hour into predictions. Leave its timing to Allah and take seriously the warning that it may be near.
• Do not treat worldly protection as security against judgment. These warnings leave no room for assuming that someone else can rescue a person from the consequences of rejecting faith.
• Measure the guidance you follow by obedience to Allah and the Messenger ﷺ, not by the standing of the person offering it.
• Examine your loyalties now. Following someone into error can turn admiration into bitter blame, without removing your own responsibility.

Believers are told not to be like those who hurt Mūsā عليه السلام, after which Allah cleared him of what they said, and he was honoured in Allah's sight. They are then commanded to be mindful of Allah and speak words that are straight (qawlan sadīdan), so that Allah will amend their deeds and forgive them their sins — and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger ﷺ has certainly achieved a great attainment.

• Do not turn someone’s behaviour into evidence for an accusation you cannot establish. The account of Mūsā عليه السلام shows how even modesty can become the target of baseless suspicion.
• Treat careful speech as part of improving your conduct, not merely improving your manners. Straight, well-aimed words restrain much of what corrupts actions.
• When you fall into sin, turn back in repentance rather than treating forgiveness as permission to continue.
• Measure success by obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Protecting the Prophet ﷺ from harmful accusations and disciplining your speech belong to that obedience.

Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and were afraid of it, but man undertook to bear it — he was unjust and ignorant. The surah closes on a cosmic image: creation on the grandest scale refused a responsibility that the smallest and weakest of creatures accepted.

• Treat religious duties as responsibilities to fulfil, not merely commitments to acknowledge.
• Let awareness of the Trust’s weight lead to care rather than confidence that you cannot fall short.
• Take the consequences of your choices seriously without treating failure as a reason to give up on repentance.
• Recognize that both men and women are addressed by the warning and the promise of accepted repentance.
