The tafsīr in brief

All praise to Allah who created the heavens and the earth and made the darknesses and the light — yet those who disbelieve equate others with their Lord. Say: to whom belongs what is in the heavens and the earth? Say: to Allah. He has decreed mercy upon Himself. And if Allah touches you with harm, none can remove it but He.

• Let recognition of the Creator shape your worship and private conduct. The One who owns and sustains everything also knows what you conceal; His ownership calls for submission, not merely agreement.
• Examine your willingness to accept truth before demanding more evidence. Neither impressive resources nor repeated objections protected earlier deniers; learn from their outcomes rather than repeating their refusal.
• Meet hardship with reliance on Allah and meet His commands with seriousness. His power is joined to wisdom, and lasting success is receiving His mercy on the Day of judgment.
• Respond honestly to the Qur'an's warning. Recognizing truth without accepting it, inventing claims about Allah, or denying your own choices will not provide a defence when everyone is gathered.

Some of them listen to you, but We have placed coverings over their hearts so they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they saw every sign they would not believe, calling it 'nothing but tales of the ancients.' They forbid others from him and keep away from him themselves, destroying only their own souls without perceiving it. If you could see when they are made to stand before the Fire, they will say, 'Oh, if only we could be returned, we would not deny the signs of our Lord.' But it is only that what they used to hide before has become clear to them; and if they were returned, they would return to what they were forbidden, for they are liars. And they say, 'There is nothing but our life of this world.' The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement, and the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah.

• Listen with a willingness to reconsider, not merely to argue. Guard against turning your own resistance into a reason for keeping others from guidance.
• Do not mistake a promise made under pressure for lasting change. Begin changing the habits you know are wrong while you still have the opportunity.
• Make choices with accountability before Allah in view. Ignoring the Hereafter does not remove the meeting or its consequences.
• Review both the wrong you need to leave and the good you keep postponing. Give preparation for the Hereafter priority over passing distractions.

We certainly know that what they say grieves you; it is not you they deny, but the wrongdoers reject the signs of Allah. Messengers before you were denied, yet they patiently bore the denial and harm until Our help came to them — none can alter the words of Allah, and news of the messengers has already come to you. If their turning away distresses you, then seek a tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them a sign if you could — but had Allah willed, He would have united them upon guidance. Say: have you considered, if Allah's punishment came upon you or the Hour came, would you call upon other than Allah, if you are truthful? No, it is Him alone you would call, and He would remove the affliction you called Him for, if He willed, and you would forget what you associate with Him. We sent messengers to nations before you and afflicted them with hardship and adversity, that perhaps they would humble themselves — yet when Our punishment came to them, they did not humble themselves, but their hearts hardened and Satan made their deeds seem pleasing to them. So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened for them the doors of every good thing, until they rejoiced in what they were given, and We seized them suddenly — then at once they were in despair, and the wrongdoing people were cut off entirely.

• When sincere efforts meet rejection, acknowledge the hurt without treating it as proof that the message has failed. Follow the messengers’ patience and leave guidance and the timing of help to Allah.
• Practise receptive listening rather than making acceptance depend on a sign of your choosing. Remember that Allah’s knowledge includes every creature, while guidance remains in His hands.
• Let hardship lead to humble prayer and honest self-examination, not the defence of harmful habits. Call on Allah alone while recognising that relief comes according to His will.
• Do not use prosperity as proof that your choices need no correction. Keep responding to reminders during ease, remembering that comfort does not remove accountability to Allah.

Say: have you considered, if Allah took away your hearing and your sight and sealed your hearts, which god other than Allah could bring it back to you? We send the messengers only as bringers of good news and warners; whoever believes and reforms has nothing to fear. Say: I do not tell you I possess the treasuries of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say I am an angel — I only follow what is revealed to me. When those who believe in Our signs come to you, say: peace be upon you; your Lord has decreed mercy upon Himself. And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. He knows what is on the land and in the sea; not a leaf falls but that He knows it, and no grain in the darknesses of the earth, and nothing moist or dry, but it is in a clear record.

• Let dependence on Allah become a response to His message: use your faculties to listen, take the warning seriously, and join belief with reform.
• Make revelation, rather than impressive claims or people’s desires, your guide. Let it shape both what you follow and what you refuse.
• Welcome sincere worshippers rather than questioning their worth, and make room for people returning from wrongdoing through repentance and changed conduct.
• Do not mistake delayed judgment for overlooked wrongdoing. Leave its timing to Allah, whose knowledge misses neither people’s actions nor creation’s smallest details.

Say: who saves you from the darknesses of the land and sea when you call upon Him humbly and privately, 'if He saves us from this we will surely be among the grateful'? Say: Allah saves you from that and from every distress, and then you associate others with Him. Say: He has power to send punishment upon you from above you or from beneath your feet, or to confuse you into factions and make you taste the violence of one another. Leave alone those who take their religion as amusement and are deceived by worldly life, and remind with it lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it earned. It is He who created the heavens and the earth in truth, and the day He says 'Be,' it is; His word is the truth, and His is the dominion the day the Trumpet is blown — Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the All-Wise, the Acquainted.

• Use waking each day as a reminder to review your actions: your time is limited, your deeds are known, and your final account belongs to Allah.
• Let gratitude survive the crisis. Keep worship directed to Allah after relief, and take the warning about destructive division seriously rather than assuming safety will last.
• Remind people without trying to control their response. Withdraw from mockery, but do not let their rejection make you abandon sincere reminders about accountability.
• When pressured to turn away from guidance, hold to Allah’s guidance through prayer and mindfulness of Him, remembering that you will be gathered to the Creator who knows everything.

Shown the dominion of the heavens and the earth, Ibrāhīm watches a star rise and says 'this is my lord' — then it sets: 'I do not love those that set.' Then the moon, then the sun, greater still, and each disappears. He concludes: I have turned my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, inclining to truth, and I am not of the polytheists. Allah calls this 'Our argument which We gave Ibrāhīm against his people'.

• Do not treat an inherited belief as proof of its truth. Examine what is worshipped, and let reflection on Allah’s creation deepen certainty.
• When explaining faith, guide people through a clear argument rather than merely announcing a conclusion. Ibrāhīm عليه السلام exposes the same weakness in each heavenly body before affirming worship of the Creator.
• Do not let warnings about false gods determine your worship. Ask what Allah has authorised, and seek security through faithful belief rather than appeasing idols.
• Use sound reasoning to defend Allah’s oneness, while remembering that the ability to offer a clear proof is a gift from Him.

We gave Ibrāhīm Isḥāq and Yaʿqūb, guiding each of them, and Nūḥ We guided before, and from his descendants Dāwūd, Sulaymān, Ayyūb, Yūsuf, Mūsā and Hārūn — thus We reward the doers of good. And Zakariyyā, Yaḥyā, ʿĪsā and Ilyās, each among the righteous. And Ismāʿīl, al-Yasaʿ, Yūnus and Lūṭ — each was favoured above the worlds, and from among their fathers, descendants and brothers We chose some and guided them to a straight path. This is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills of His servants; had they associated others with Him, all they used to do would have gone to waste. Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture, judgement and prophethood — and if these disbelieve, We have entrusted it to a people who will not disbelieve in it. Those are the ones Allah guided, so follow their guidance.

• Read the prophets’ stories as guidance to follow, not merely names to remember. Their shared worship of Allah alone connects their lives to your own practice.
• Be grateful for a faithful family without treating ancestry or past good deeds as a guarantee. Seek Allah’s guidance and protect your worship from associating partners with Him.
• Do not measure the future of faith by the rejection you see around you. Focus on receiving Allah’s guidance faithfully rather than assuming that others’ denial can defeat it.
• Let the Prophet’s ﷺ example shape how you share faith: convey the reminder without making personal gain your purpose, and do not treat it as belonging to only one people.

They did not appraise Allah with true appraisal when they said, 'Allah has not sent down anything to any human being' — say: who then sent down the Scripture Mūsā brought as a light and guidance for the people, which you make into scattered sheets, showing some and hiding much, and you were taught what neither you nor your fathers knew? Say: Allah — then leave them in their amusement, playing. And this is a blessed Book We have sent down, confirming what came before it, so that you may warn the mother of cities and those around it. And who does more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah or says, 'It has been revealed to me,' when nothing was revealed to him, or one who says, 'I will reveal the like of what Allah revealed'? If you could see when the wrongdoers are in the throes of death and the angels stretch out their hands, saying, 'Discharge your souls! Today you will be repaid with the punishment of humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth.' And you have certainly come to Us alone, as We created you the first time, leaving behind you all that We bestowed upon you, and We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners in you — the connection between you has been severed, and lost from you is what you used to claim.

• Approach revelation ready to learn, not merely to defend an opinion. Do not select only the guidance that suits you and hide what challenges you.
• Give belief in the Hereafter a practical place in your day by protecting your prayers.
• Be careful about attributing claims to Allah. Fabricated religious authority can mislead everyone who trusts it.
• Let the certainty of death and individual accountability check arrogance now; neither possessions nor imagined spiritual protection can make false claims true.

Indeed, Allah splits the seed and the fruit-stone, bringing the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living — that is Allah, so how are you deluded? He is the splitter of the dawn, and He has made the night for rest, and the sun and the moon for reckoning; that is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. And it is He who made for you the stars that you may be guided by them in the darknesses of land and sea; We have detailed the signs for a people who know. And it is He who sends down rain from the sky, and We bring out with it the growth of every plant, and from it green foliage from which We bring out grains arranged in layers, and from the palm tree, from its pollen, clusters hanging low, and gardens of grapevines, olives and pomegranates, resembling yet unresembling — look at its fruit as it grows and ripens; in that are signs for a people who believe.

• Do not wait for something unusual before noticing Allah’s signs. A sprouting seed and the return of dawn invite attention precisely because they are familiar and dependable.
• Let everyday benefits lead to gratitude: the night offers rest, the sun and moon help measure time, and the stars help travellers find their way.
• Include your own existence in your reflection on creation. Remembering humanity’s shared origin can help you see yourself as dependent on Allah, not merely as an observer of His world.
• Give your food more than a passing glance. Notice its growth, ripening and variety, and let these details deepen your appreciation of Allah’s provision.

Yet they have made the jinn partners with Allah, though He created them, and they falsely attributed to Him sons and daughters without any knowledge — glory be to Him and exalted is He above what they describe. Originator of the heavens and the earth — how could He have a son when He has no companion, and He created all things, and He is Knowing of all things? That is Allah, your Lord; there is no god but Him, Creator of all things, so worship Him, and He is Guardian over all things. Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision, and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted. And do not insult those they call upon besides Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge — thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds; then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.

• Let belief in Allah as Creator shape whom you worship and obey: created beings cannot become His partners, and inherited claims about Him need evidence.
• Approach revelation with humility: you cannot encompass Allah, but you can respond to His clear guidance rather than dismiss it with accusations.
• Measure your responsibility by faithful obedience and patient conveying, not by your ability to control another person's response.
• Before speaking against false worship, consider what your words may provoke. Avoid insults that lead to greater wrongdoing, and leave final judgment to Allah.

They swore by Allah their most solemn oaths that if a sign came to them they would surely believe in it; say: signs are only with Allah, and what will make you perceive that even if it came, they would not believe? And even if We sent down the angels to them and the dead spoke to them and We gathered everything before them, they would not believe unless Allah willed — but most of them are ignorant. And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy, devils among mankind and jinn, inspiring one another with flowery speech in deception. If most of those on earth were followed, they would lead you astray from the way of Allah; they follow nothing but assumption, and they only guess. And do not eat of that over which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for it is grave disobedience; indeed the devils inspire their allies to argue with you, and if you obeyed them, you would indeed be associators.

• Receive guidance sincerely rather than making obedience depend on another extraordinary sign. More evidence alone does not guarantee a willing heart.
• Look beyond attractive language to where an argument leads. Opposition need not discredit the message, and pleasing words can encourage harmful choices.
• Measure religious claims by Allah's revealed guidance, not their popularity. His truth, justice, and knowledge are firmer grounds than human guesswork.
• Let faith shape ordinary choices as well as private conduct: accept what Allah permits, respect what He forbids, and do not let desire or persuasive pressure rewrite His commands.

The tafsīr in brief

Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among the people like one in darkness from which he cannot emerge? Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers what they used to do. And thus We have placed in every city its greatest criminals to plot therein, but they only plot against themselves without perceiving it. Whoever Allah wants to guide, He expands his breast to Islam; and whoever He wants to leave astray, He makes his breast tight and constricted, as though he were climbing into the sky — thus Allah places disgrace upon those who do not believe. This is the path of your Lord, made straight; We have detailed the signs for a people who take heed.

• Treat guidance as a gift from Allah, not a personal achievement. Let the Qurʾān guide your choices among people, and value a heart willing to accept Islam.
• Do not mistake influence or status for authority over the truth. Powerful opposition cannot decide whom Allah chooses or protect people from the consequences of their schemes.
• Turn attention to Allah’s signs into steady good deeds. The straight path leads toward lasting peace with Allah, not merely approval in this life.
• Examine what makes a course of action attractive before following it. People can admire their own conduct and still fail to see the harm it brings them.

On the day He gathers them together: 'O company of jinn, you have taken many humans,' and their allies among mankind will say, 'Our Lord, we benefited from one another, and we have reached our term which You appointed for us' — the Fire is your home, abiding therein, except what Allah wills. On that day Allah will ask: 'O company of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among yourselves, relating My signs to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day?' They will say, 'We bear witness against ourselves,' for the worldly life deceived them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. And for all are degrees according to what they did, and your Lord is not unaware of what they do. Say: O my people, act according to your position; indeed, I am acting, and you are going to know to whom will belong the good outcome of this home. Indeed the wrongdoers will not succeed.

• Judge an alliance by where it leads, not merely by what you gain from it. Mutual advantage can hide a relationship that strengthens wrongdoing.
• Treat a received warning as a responsibility to respond. The attractions of worldly life do not erase a message that has already reached you.
• Work on your deeds with humility: your rank depends on what you do, but Allah does not depend on you. Remember both your need for Him and His mercy.
• Measure your direction by its final outcome rather than its present comfort. Allah’s promise cannot be defeated, and wrongdoing is not a path to lasting success.

The tafsīr in brief

The surah's name comes from here: cattle dedicated to idols, animals whose backs were forbidden, offspring assigned to men and denied to women, all declared without any authority. The demand is repeated: bring your witnesses who testify that Allah prohibited this. Legislation is not folklore, and inventing prohibition in the name of Allah is placed alongside inventing permission.

• Examine inherited religious customs rather than assuming they are sacred. Practices that favor a group or make harmful actions seem virtuous must not be attributed to Allah without knowledge.
• Receive Allah’s provision with balanced gratitude: enjoy it, give others their due, and avoid excess rather than inventing restrictions.
• Before calling a food religiously forbidden, seek revealed evidence. Distinguish invented restrictions from actual divine commands, and respect the conditions and exceptions revelation gives.
• Let hope in Allah’s mercy lead to correction, not excuses. Neither an appeal to destiny nor confident testimony makes an unsupported religious claim true.

The tafsīr in brief

Say: come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you — do not associate anything with Him, and to parents excellence, do not kill your children out of poverty, do not approach immoralities outward or hidden, do not kill the soul Allah made sacred, do not approach the orphan's wealth except in the best way, give full measure and weight, be just in speech even against a relative, and fulfil the covenant of Allah. And this is My straight path, so follow it and do not follow other ways. The surah ends with the definition of a Muslim life: my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.

• Make following the straight path concrete: worship Allah alone, protect vulnerable people, honor family duties, and keep money and speech free from injustice.
• Treat access to revelation as a responsibility, not merely a privilege. Seek its guidance and act on it rather than imagining how faithful you might have been under different circumstances.
• Do not postpone faith and good deeds or let religious division pull you away from guidance. The warning against delay comes with encouragement: Allah multiplies good and wrongs no one.
• Let devotion to Allah shape ordinary life as well as prayer and sacrifice. Ask whether your daily choices serve the same Lord you worship.
• Take responsibility for your choices and treat your advantages as tests. Rely on Allah, answer for your own conduct, and meet His gifts with accountable action rather than entitlement.
