Sūrah Al-AnʿāmThe Cattle · Makkah · 165 āyāt · 4 movements

Revealed 55th and, by a well-known report, revealed in a single night accompanied by seventy thousand angels. It is the great Makkan surah of ʿaqīdah: it dismantles polytheism argument by argument, walks through Ibrāhīm's reasoning as he watches the star, the moon and the sun set, exposes the invented food laws that gave the surah its name, and lists the ten commandments of Sūrat al-Anʿām — the covenant recited in āyāt 151–153 and sealed with 'this is My straight path, so follow it'.

Occasion & setting

After a decade of daʿwah, the argument with Quraysh had matured from slogans into doctrine. This surah settles the foundations — tawḥīd, prophethood, resurrection and law — for a community about to become a state.
