The tafsīr in brief

They ask you about the bounties of war. Say: the bounties belong to Allah and the Messenger, so fear Allah, set right what is between you, and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are believers. The dispute is answered not with a division formula first, but with a call to repair broken relationships and submit to authority.

• When a shared reward becomes a source of conflict, work to repair relationships rather than assuming that a distribution formula alone will restore unity.
• Let reminders of Allah change your choices: awe should encourage obedience, not remain a passing emotion.
• Give inward faith an outward expression through steady prayer and spending from what Allah has given you.
• Do not measure success only by what you receive. Keep forgiveness and standing with Allah in view when material rewards feel urgent.

Just as your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while a party of the believers were unwilling — the surah likens the reluctance before Badr to the reluctance some had shown toward the Qur'an's guidance, and insists that the outcome Allah intends can look, at first, like the harder path.

• Do not treat initial fear as the end of faith. The passage still calls the reluctant people believers, while correcting their argument against truth that had become clear.
• When a fair decision disappoints you, examine your preference before rejecting the decision. Ibn Kathīr links the unwanted battle and the disputed spoils as occasions when Allah's direction benefited the believers.
• Look beyond the easiest immediate gain. At Badr, establishing truth mattered more than securing the encounter the believers preferred.
• Respond to another person's fear with care rather than ridicule. The image of being driven toward death conveys how overwhelming the coming battle felt.

As the small Muslim force called out to their Lord, Allah answered with a promise of reinforcement by a thousand angels, sent drowsiness as security, and rain to purify them, remove the whispers of Shayṭān, and firm their hearts and feet — provision that steadied a heavily outnumbered army before a single blow was struck.

• Ask Allah for help while remaining ready to do your part. Welcome the means of support without treating them as the independent source of success.
• Do not overlook ordinary forms of provision. Rest and relief can help you meet a difficulty with a steadier heart rather than make the difficulty disappear.
• When facing pressure, pay attention to inner steadiness as well as outward resources. This passage repeatedly highlights reassurance, firm hearts and strengthened believers.
• Do not measure consequences only by what happens immediately. The passage joins the seriousness of opposing Allah and His Messenger ﷺ to accountability beyond the battlefield.

And you did not kill them, but Allah killed them, and you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw — that He might test the believers with a good test. The surah locates ultimate causation with Allah even in an act performed by the Prophet's ﷺ own hand, so that no one, including him, could take personal credit for what only Allah accomplished.

• Distinguish abandoning a shared responsibility from changing position to fulfil it. These battlefield commands allow strategy and regrouping, not desertion.
• Make a real effort without claiming that the outcome was yours alone. The Prophet’s ﷺ throw was real, while its extraordinary effect came from Allah.
• Receive success with gratitude and humility rather than self-congratulation: Allah describes His help as a good test and attributes the weakening of the enemy’s plans to Himself.
• Do not answer a clear warning by simply gathering more support. The defeated opponents are told that stopping hostilities is better than returning with larger numbers.

O you who have believed, obey Allah and His Messenger and do not turn away from him while you are listening. Do not be like those who say, 'We have heard,' while they do not really hear. The worst of creatures in Allah's sight are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason — those who refuse to think, not those who lack the faculties, since had Allah known any good in them He would have made them hear, and even then they would have turned away in aversion.

• Measure the benefit of listening by whether you follow the guidance you understand, not simply by whether you can say you heard it.
• Use your ability to reason to engage honestly with the truth. This warning is about rejecting guidance, not about someone’s physical abilities.
• When you resist guidance, examine your willingness to accept it rather than treating resistance as something you cannot help.
• Bring both honest intentions and attentive understanding to learning: neither outward agreement nor intellectual ability alone amounts to a faithful response.

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life, and know that Allah intervenes between a person and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered. Guard against a trial that will not strike only the wrongdoers among you specifically, and know that Allah is severe in punishment.

• Turn hearing guidance into obedience rather than postponing your response; the call is to what gives you life.
• Protect community trust in two ways: keep your own responsibilities and do not treat wrongdoing around you as someone else's concern.
• Remember the help that brought you through vulnerability. Let greater security produce gratitude and obedience rather than forgetfulness.
• When money or family interests put pressure on your duties, protect what has been entrusted to you and keep Allah's reward in view.

Remember when you were few and considered weak in the land, fearing that people might snatch you away, but He sheltered you, supported you with His help, and provided you with good things, that you might be grateful. The trial of wealth and children is also named directly here, with the reminder that with Allah is the greatest reward.

• Let remembering past hardship shape how you handle present blessings: enjoy what Allah gives without allowing it to crowd out your duties to Him.
• Review your responsibilities as trusts, including the obligations Allah has placed upon you, rather than treating trustworthiness as only keeping other people's possessions safe.
• When worldly interests compete with obedience, keep Allah's reward in view and choose mindfulness of Him over immediate gain.
• Seek clearer judgment through obedience to Allah, while remembering that His promise includes forgiveness as well as guidance.

O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (furqān) to distinguish truth from falsehood, remove your misdeeds, and forgive you. And remember when the disbelievers plotted against you to restrain you, kill you, or drive you out — they planned, and Allah planned, and Allah is the best of planners.

• Build religious judgment and responsibility on obedience to Allah, not on status. Taqwā is central both to discerning truth and to being worthy of sacred trust.
• When opposition looks carefully organized, remember that human planning is not ultimate. The plot against the Messenger ﷺ offers reassurance without denying the reality of danger.
• Do not let confidence replace an honest response to revelation. Dismissing the message or issuing a challenge is not the same as showing that it is false.
• Treat the absence of immediate punishment as an opportunity to seek forgiveness, not as proof that wrongdoing is acceptable.

Their prayer at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping, so taste the punishment for what you used to reject. Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to hinder people from the path of Allah, and it will become a source of regret and defeat for them. But Allah was not going to punish them while the Prophet ﷺ was among them, nor while they were seeking forgiveness.

• Examine whether your worship is genuinely directed to Allah rather than becoming an outward performance. The passage contrasts corrupted prayer with worship devoted entirely to Him.
• Judge spending by what it serves, not by its scale or popularity. Wealth and collective backing cannot turn opposition to Allah’s path into lasting success.
• Do not let a sinful past become an excuse to continue. The invitation is to leave defiance behind and turn sincerely to Islam, obedience, and repentance.
• Do not make trust in Allah depend on other people’s response. He sees whether they cease, and He remains the believers’ Protector and Helper if they turn away.

Know that whatever spoils you obtain, a fifth of it is for Allah, the Messenger, relatives, orphans, the needy and the traveller. Remember when you were on the near side of the valley and they were on the far side, with the caravan lower than you — had you made an appointment to meet, you would have failed to agree, but it happened so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined, and each side was shown the other as few in their own eyes so that a decreed matter would be carried out.

• Do not let the excitement of receiving gains eclipse the rights of others. Faith calls for honoring the assigned share fully, even when an item seems insignificant.
• Hold your plans with humility: the believers intended one encounter, but Allah brought about another. An unexpected outcome need not mean events are outside His control.
• Notice how fear can become disagreement within a group. Allah’s protection at Badr included steadying hearts, not only arranging outward circumstances.
• Do not confuse confidence with complete knowledge. Both armies advanced while seeing less than the full numerical picture, and the outcome remained in Allah’s hands.

O you who have believed, when you meet a company in battle, stand firm and remember Allah often, that you may succeed. Obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute among yourselves, lest you lose courage and your strength depart — and be patient, for Allah is with the patient. Internal discord, not the enemy's numbers, is named as the greater danger to victory.

• Meet pressure with both practical steadiness and reliance on Allah: keep remembering Him while doing what obedience and patience require.
• Treat internal conflict as a threat to shared work, not a distraction that resources alone will overcome. Protect the group’s ability to act together.
• Check whether the desire to impress others is driving a decision. Public recognition is not a sound reason to persist in a wrong course.
• Do not mistake attractive appearances or confident promises for proof that a course is right. Judge the conduct itself, remembering that Allah knows it fully.

The hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, 'Their religion has deceived them,' seeing the small Muslim force set out against a much larger army. The surah answers by describing the angels taking the souls of the disbelievers, striking their faces and backs, and taking them to the punishment of the Burning. Their pattern is likened to the way of the people of Firʿawn عليه السلام's era and those before them, who disbelieved in Allah's signs, so Allah seized them for their sins — for Allah never changes a favour He has bestowed on a people until they change what is within themselves.

• Do not let a comparison of resources become your whole judgment of a situation. Keep reliance on Allah’s might and wisdom at the center.
• Let the warning about death lead to responsibility for your deeds. The passage joins a sobering account of punishment to an equally clear affirmation of Allah’s justice.
• Read the fate of earlier nations as a warning, not merely distant history: power and prosperity cannot make rejection of Allah’s signs safe.
• When considering the blessings you enjoy, examine your conduct as well as your circumstances. Receiving a favor is a reason for moral care, not complacency.

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are those who disbelieve, so they will not believe — those with whom you made a covenant, then they break their covenant every time, and they do not fear Allah. If you gain dominance over them in war, disperse by their example those behind them, so that they may take heed.

• Take repeated broken commitments seriously. Another promise is not a substitute for changing the conduct that made earlier promises unreliable.
• Distinguish the passage’s stated purpose from personal revenge: its wartime warning aims to discourage others from repeating treaty-breaking.
• When an agreement must end, make its status clear to the other party rather than exploiting their belief that it still protects them.
• Do not let another party’s bad faith become your excuse for betrayal. Firmness toward treaty-breakers and honesty in your own dealings belong together.

Do not let those who disbelieve suppose that they have gotten ahead; they will not cause failure. Prepare against them whatever you are able of strength and of steeds of war, by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides them whom you do not know but whom Allah knows. And if they incline to peace, then incline to it also, and rely upon Allah, for He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

• Let confidence in Allah’s power steady you without making you careless: assurance is followed by a command to prepare.
• Take responsibility for what you can actually provide. Limited resources call for realistic effort, not an excuse to do nothing.
• Do not measure spending in Allah’s cause only by its immediate visible return; Allah promises full repayment without injustice.
• Do not let readiness for conflict become attachment to conflict. Strength and a sincere willingness to accept peace belong together.
• Accepting peace does not require knowing every hidden intention. Take the step commanded while placing your trust in Allah.

And He brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is on the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together, but Allah brought them together — a description of the bond forged between the Muhājirūn and Anṣār, tribes that had fought each other for generations before Islam.

• Do not let the possibility of deception make you reject every opening for peace; the call to accept peace comes with a call to trust Allāh.
• Value the people who support you. Their help and the affection binding your community together are favours to appreciate, not achievements to take for granted.
• Use resources to help reconciliation, but do not assume that spending money can purchase sincere affection. Recognise unity of hearts as a gift from Allāh.
• When resources seem inadequate, do not measure your hope by material strength alone. Remember that Allāh’s reassurance includes the believers who follow the Prophet ﷺ.

O Prophet, encourage the believers toward battle: if there are twenty among you who are steadfast, they will overcome two hundred, and Allah eased this later once He knew there was weakness among you, reducing the ratio to one who will overcome two by Allah's permission. It is not fitting for a prophet to take captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land — some among the believers had desired the worldly gain of ransom, and the surah addresses the taking of prisoners after Badr directly, along with the sincerity Allah knows in the hearts of those who were tested by it.

• Value steadfastness without pretending that weakness does not exist. Allah’s easing of the requirement shows that a lighter burden can coexist with a serious commitment.
• Examine what is driving a decision, especially when money is involved. Accept correction, and do not mistake permission to enjoy a gain for permission to forget accountability to Allah.
• Do not treat a person’s loss or past opposition as the end of their story. The message to the captives opens a path of inner goodness, forgiveness and something better.
• Hold hope for people’s reform alongside awareness that betrayal remains possible. Neither hope nor caution requires claiming to know what is in someone’s heart.

Those who believed and emigrated and strove with their wealth and lives, and those who gave shelter and aid, are allies of one another; but those who believed and did not emigrate hold no claim of guardianship over you until they emigrate. The closing āyāt of the surah define the bonds of the new Muslim polity in concrete terms of sacrifice and reciprocity, not blood alone.

• Make support tangible through time, resources and hospitality. These verses honour those who provide shelter and help alongside those who leave their homes and struggle.
• Check existing commitments before responding to a call for solidarity. Helping others does not give permission to break a binding treaty.
• Treat mutual protection as a shared responsibility, not an optional kindness: neglecting it can harm the wider community.
• Welcome those who join later without treating them as permanent outsiders, while respecting the distinct rights Allah gives to relatives.
