The tafsīr in brief

Allah opens by swearing by the sky and its great constellations, by the Promised Day, and by a witness and what is witnessed. The oaths gather scale (the heavens), certainty (a day that will come), and testimony (someone who sees, and something seen) before the story of the ditch is even told.

• When hardship fills your attention, remember both the vast sky and the promised Judgment. Your present circumstances are not the whole picture.
• Do not confuse an absence of human witnesses with an absence of accountability. Take hidden wrongdoing seriously, including your own.
• Make time on Friday to ask Allah for good and seek His protection from evil. The narration quoted in the tafsīr connects this day with a special opportunity for supplication.

The tafsīr in brief

A curse is pronounced upon the people of the ukhdūd — the trench — who lit a fire fed with fuel and sat by it watching what they did to the believers, resenting them for nothing but their faith in Allah, the Almighty, the Praiseworthy, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and who is witness over everything.

• Do not mistake the ability to inflict harm for being right. The people who controlled the fire are the ones this passage condemns.
• Refuse to make another person's suffering a spectacle. The deliberate watching described here is part of the persecutors' cruelty.
• Do not assume that people who are targeted must have done something wrong. Here, the believers were hated for their faith alone.
• When injustice seems unchecked, remember that it is neither unseen by Allah nor outside His dominion.

Those who persecuted the believing men and women and did not repent will have the punishment of Hell and the punishment of burning; those who believed and did righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow — that is the great attainment.

• Take wrongdoing seriously without treating repentance as hopeless. Even this severe warning leaves a reason to stop and return to Allah.
• When oppression appears unanswered, remember that its consequences are not lost: the punishment described here corresponds to the persecutors’ own crime.
• Keep faith joined to righteous action. The promise names both belief and good deeds, giving the believer a direction to follow under pressure.
• Do not measure ultimate success by who holds power now. These verses direct attention beyond persecution to the sharply different outcomes Allah promises.

Your Lord's seizure is severe; He is the One who begins creation and repeats it; He is the Forgiving, the Loving, Owner of the Throne, Glorious, the Doer of whatever He wills — a cluster of names that hold together fearsome power and tender mercy.

• Do not measure final justice by what happens immediately. Allah’s severe punishment and His power to resurrect mean that present appearances are not the whole account.
• Take wrongdoing seriously without despairing of repentance. The warning of punishment does not close the way to Allah’s forgiveness and love.
• Let regret lead to a humble return to Allah rather than the belief that your sin is too great to be forgiven.
• When human power feels overwhelming, remember the Owner of the Throne. Trust His unopposed authority together with His wisdom and justice.

Has the story reached you of the soldiers — Firʿawn and Thamūd? Yet the disbelievers persist in denial, while Allah encompasses them from all sides. It is a Glorious Qurʾān, in a Preserved Tablet.

• When worldly power seems overwhelming, remember that strength is not immunity from Allah’s judgment.
• Examine how you respond to evidence: encountering truth is not the same as being willing to accept it.
• Do not mistake an oppressor’s ability to cause suffering for unlimited control. Their power remains contained within Allah’s.
• Return to the Qurʾān with confidence in its protected message, rather than allowing people’s rejection to determine your trust in it.
