The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens by blessing Allah who sent down the Criterion upon His servant as a warner to all peoples, not the Arabs alone. It then dismantles the false gods worshipped besides Him — they create nothing, possess no power over harm or benefit, and cannot even control death or resurrection — before turning to the specific objections raised against the Messenger ﷺ himself.

• Let Allah’s revelation guide your judgement of truth, and direct worship to the Creator rather than to anything dependent on Him.
• Distinguish evidence from ridicule. Repeated accusations and demands for wealth do not establish whether a message is true.
• Weigh present choices against their lasting outcome. Let the warning of judgement and the promise of Paradise encourage obedience.
• Do not let comfort make you forget Allah’s message or assume that those you wrongly rely on can answer for you at judgement.
• Do not confuse ordinary human needs with spiritual failure. Meet the tests that come through other people with patience, remembering that Allah sees.

Quraysh's specific complaints are quoted directly in the text: why does he eat and trade like other men, why was no angel sent with him as a co-warner, why was no treasure or private garden given to him. Allah calls these the words of people who are lost and cannot find a way, and warns that the arrogant will one day demand to see the angels — only to be told 'no glad tidings that day for the criminals'.

• Examine a message rather than dismissing its bearer over ordinary needs, social standing or insulting labels.
• Do not make wealth a condition for recognising truth. Allah's ability to give is not measured by what He chooses to grant.
• Let the warning of judgement challenge a narrow focus on worldly advantages and bring accountability into present decisions.
• Take the warning seriously now rather than assuming that cries of regret later will provide an escape.

Allah will gather those who were worshipped besides Him and ask them whether they misled their worshippers or the worshippers strayed on their own — and they will disown any responsibility. Every deed of the disbelievers is described as scattered dust. The wrongdoer will bite his hands in regret, wishing he had taken a different path and not made a particular companion his intimate friend, who diverted him from the message after it had reached him.

• Keep worship directed to Allah alone. Someone’s greatness does not make worshipping them right or mean they will defend that worship.
• Do not measure spiritual safety by comfort or a record of deeds. Ask whether ease is making you forget Allah’s message.
• Act on the Messenger’s ﷺ guidance now rather than postponing a response until regret can no longer help.
• Assess close friendships by their direction: protect your response to Allah’s reminders rather than surrendering it to someone else’s influence.

On the Day the disbelievers see the angels, there will be no good news for them that Day — only the angels saying 'forbidden, all forbidden' to any hope they had. The companions of Paradise, by contrast, will have the best home and the loveliest resting place. The sky will split apart with clouds, the angels will be sent down in ranks, and true kingship on that Day will belong entirely to the Most Merciful — a Day that will be difficult for the disbelievers.

• Approach guidance with humility rather than setting proud conditions for accepting it. Seeing the sign someone demands does not necessarily bring them safety.
• Examine what motivates your good actions, not just how they look. Faith and sincerity matter more than winning people’s admiration.
• Read the warnings alongside the promise of Paradise. Let accountability encourage seriousness without overlooking the good resting place promised to its people.
• Do not treat worldly power as your final security. Remembering that every earthly authority ends can put status and influence in their proper place.

The Messenger ﷺ will say, 'O my Lord, my people have taken this Qur'an as a thing forsaken.' Allah answers that He has made for every prophet enemies from among the criminals, and that his Lord is sufficient as a guide and a helper. To the disbelievers' objection that the Qur'an was not sent down all at once, the answer is given: it was sent down that way to steady his heart, and it was arranged in a precise, gradual order.

• Make room for more than recitation: seek to understand what you read and put its guidance into practice.
• Do not treat opposition as proof that following guidance has failed. Keep seeking Allah's guidance and help rather than expecting a path without difficulty.
• Value steady engagement with the Qur'an rather than rushing through it. The wisdom of gradual revelation shows the importance of absorbing guidance over time.
• When an objection troubles you, seek a clear explanation rooted in revelation. This passage presents the Qur'an as both support for the heart and an answer to doubts.

Those who will be gathered on their faces towards Hell are described as the worst in place and the furthest off the road. Mūsā عليه السلام was given the Scripture and Hārūn عليه السلام as his helper, but the people of Nūḥ عليه السلام, ʿĀd, Thamūd, and the companions of the well were destroyed for denying their messengers, each given as an example and a lesson. The disbelievers of Makkah pass by the town rained on with an evil rain yet do not reflect, because they do not expect resurrection. The section closes by describing whoever takes his own desire as his god, asking whether such a person can be guided — and comparing those who do not use reason to cattle, or even further astray.

• Do not mistake mockery or confident persistence for proof of truth. Judge your direction by guidance, not by how firmly a group defends it.
• Read the accounts of earlier nations as warnings for your own response to guidance, not simply as names and events to remember.
• When you encounter reminders of past destruction, pause to consider accountability. Seeing a warning is not the same as learning from it.
• Use your ability to listen and reason to examine what you want. Personal preference must not become an authority that overrides divine guidance.

Allah turns attention to the shadow that lengthens and could be fixed but is drawn in gradually, the winds that herald mercy, water sent down to give life to a dead land, and the two seas — one fresh and one salty — kept apart by a barrier. The section closes with the sun and moon set in their courses and night and day made in succession, a sign for whoever wishes to remember or be grateful.

• Do not let familiar blessings become invisible. Shade, rest, and water are daily reasons to recognize Allah’s care and respond with gratitude rather than simply consume His gifts.
• Keep sharing guidance rooted in the Qur’an, with both hope and warning. The Prophet ﷺ models commitment to the message without surrendering to opposition or seeking payment.
• Let evidence, not inherited attachment or desire, guide your worship. The One who orders the waters and creates human families is unlike the powerless things people defend as gods.
• Meet the call of the Most Merciful with trust, praise, and willingness to obey. Reliance on Him should go together with awareness that He knows your sins.
• Turn attention to the sky and the passing of time into remembrance. The point is not only to admire creation, but to thank its Creator.

The surah closes with a portrait of the true servants of the Most Merciful: they walk upon the earth with humility, respond to the ignorant with peace, spend the night in prostration and prayer, fear the punishment of Hell, spend moderately between extravagance and stinginess, avoid false testimony and idle talk, and pray for spouses and offspring who are a comfort to the eye, asking to be made leaders for the righteous.

• Be selective about what shapes your response: do not copy insults or join falsehood, but remain ready to listen when Allah's verses challenge you.
• Bring devotion into both private worship and everyday choices. Make room for prayer and asking for protection, while checking spending for both waste and stinginess.
• Take serious wrongdoing seriously without treating your past as beyond repair. Answer guilt with repentance, belief, and good actions rather than excuses or despair.
• Ask Allah for good in your family and in the example you set. Keep pursuing that good patiently: the passage promises a lasting home to these servants and warns against denial.
