The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens without preamble: fear your Lord, for the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing. On that day every nursing mother is distracted from her infant, every pregnant woman miscarries, and people appear drunk though they are not — because Allah's punishment is severe.

• Receive the call to fear Allah as a personal responsibility: the opening addresses all people, not only a particular community.
• Let remembering the Hour guide present choices toward obedience to Allah, rather than treating its frightening description as something merely to imagine.
• Approach the Hour with humility. Familiar bonds and ordinary experience do not provide a measure of how overwhelming its terror will be.
• Hold warning and hope together. When the companions wept, the Prophet ﷺ urged them to remain upright and expressed hope that they would form a substantial share of the people of Paradise.

Allah recalls establishing the House for Ibrāhīm and commanding him to proclaim the pilgrimage to mankind — they will come on foot and on every lean camel, from every distant pass, to witness benefits for themselves and mention Allah's name over the sacrificial animals. Honouring the symbols of Allah is said to spring from taqwā of the heart, and it is stated plainly: neither the meat nor the blood reaches Allah, only the piety from you.

• Answer the call to worship with more than attendance: fulfill your commitments, keep your speech truthful, and direct your devotion to Allah alone.
• Turn gratitude for provision into generosity. Enjoy what Allah permits, while making room for both people who ask for help and needy people who do not.
• Care for both the quality of your worship and the sincerity behind it. The heart's piety gives meaning to the rite; it does not make careful performance unnecessary.
• Practice humble submission beyond special occasions: respond to Allah with reverence, face hardship patiently, maintain prayer, and give from what He provides.

After years in which believers were commanded only to endure harm, permission to fight is granted explicitly because they were wronged — evicted from their homes for no reason but saying 'our Lord is Allah.' The surah adds a universal principle: were it not that Allah checks some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques where His name is remembered would all have been destroyed.

• Keep the stated grounds for this permission in view: believers were attacked, wronged, and unjustly expelled for their faith. Do not detach the permission from that setting.
• Do not limit concern for threatened places of worship to mosques; this passage names other worshipping communities too.
• Measure the use of authority by the responsibilities it fulfils: worship, giving what is due to the poor, encouraging right, and restraining wrong.
• Pair trust in Allāh’s support with faithful action. His power and ownership of outcomes do not remove the duties described in these verses.

The surah closes by commanding believers to strive for Allah with the striving due to Him, reminding them He has chosen them and placed no hardship upon them in religion — the same faith named for them and their father Ibrāhīm before this revelation. The Messenger will be a witness over them, and they in turn are made witnesses over mankind, so let them establish prayer, give zakāh, and hold fast to Allah, their excellent protector and helper.

• Let worship and doing good belong together in your daily life; the call to success includes both.
• Look for ways to serve Allah through what you have, what you say, and what you do, rather than limiting striving to one kind of effort.
• Use the religion’s provided concessions when needed; sincere effort does not require rejecting the ease Allah has allowed.
• Treat belonging to the Muslim community as a responsibility, not merely an identity: its witness over people stands alongside the Messenger’s ﷺ witness over it.
• Turn reliance on Allah into faithful action: maintain prayer, give zakāh, and do good while holding fast to Him for help.

Some people argue about Allah without knowledge, following every rebellious devil who has been decreed to misguide his followers to the Blaze. To settle any doubt about the Resurrection, Allah points to the stages of human creation — from dust, to a sperm-drop, to a clinging clot, to a lump of flesh — and to the dead earth which quivers, swells and sprouts every lovely kind of growth the moment rain falls on it. Both proofs point to the same truth: the One who did this the first time can do it again.

• Choose whom you follow by sound knowledge, not confident claims: a misleading guide’s influence can shape both belief and conduct.
• Let doubt prompt careful attention to the evidence Allah presents. Your own beginnings and the earth’s renewed growth offer reasons to consider resurrection seriously.
• Remember your dependence on Allah through every stage of life. Strength and knowledge are not permanent possessions, so neither should become a reason for arrogance.
• Keep the promised resurrection in view when making choices: the passage moves beyond Allah’s ability to raise the dead to the certainty that He will do so.

A second kind of disputer appears: one who argues about Allah without knowledge, without guidance, and without any enlightening book, twisting his neck away in arrogance to turn people from Allah's way. For him is disgrace in this world and the punishment of the Burning Fire in the next, because of what his own hands sent forth — Allah is never unjust to His servants.

• Before making claims about Allāh, check their grounding rather than treating personal confidence or preference as evidence.
• Watch how you respond to correction: pride can make you turn away from truth even when it is presented to you.
• Consider where your words lead other people, not only what you personally believe; this passage warns against drawing others into misguidance.
• Take responsibility for your choices: the warning of punishment is paired with assurance that Allāh never treats His servants unjustly.

Some worship Allah only 'on an edge' — content if good comes, but turning away the moment trial strikes, losing both this world and the next. Such a person calls instead on what can neither harm nor benefit him, or on one whose harm is nearer than its benefit — a wretched protector and companion. Allah admits believers who do good to gardens beneath which rivers flow, for Allah does what He intends; and whoever imagines Allah will not aid His Messenger ﷺ is told bluntly that no scheme of his can remove what enrages him, for the Qur'an is sent down as clear evidence, and Allah guides whom He intends.

• Do not make comfortable circumstances the condition for worship. Keep belief connected to righteous action when life becomes difficult.
• Examine what you call upon for protection: imagined benefit does not make a false object of worship able to help, and reliance on it brings harm.
• Anchor hope in Allah's will rather than the mood of the moment. Neither opposition nor anger can overturn His promised reward and support.
• Approach the Qurʾān as clear evidence while remaining humble about guidance: Allah guides with complete wisdom.

Believers, Jews, Sabians, Christians, Magians and idolaters — Allah will judge between all these groups on the Day of Resurrection, He who witnesses everything. All creation prostrates to Him, willingly or not, yet many deserve the punishment. Two adversaries dispute about their Lord: for the disbelievers, garments of fire, scalding water poured on their heads, and iron maces waiting for them each time they try to escape; for believers who do good, gardens with rivers, bracelets of gold and pearl, and garments of silk, guided in this life to good speech and to the Praiseworthy path. Those who disbelieve and bar people from Allah's way and from the Sacred Mosque — resident or visitor alike — are warned of a painful punishment for any deviation or wrongdoing there.

• Leave final judgment to Allah, who knows what is hidden, and examine your own worship. Living within creation’s submission is not a substitute for willingly worshipping its Creator.
• Let the warning of punishment and the promise of Paradise move you toward faith and righteous deeds, rather than treating disputes about belief as arguments with no consequences.
• Include your speech in your efforts to live faithfully: the people promised Paradise are also described as guided to good words.
• Do not confuse responsibility for a sacred place with permission to exclude others unfairly. Respect the Sacred Mosque’s provision for residents and visitors, and take intentions of wrongdoing there seriously.

A short, firm promise sits between the rites of pilgrimage and the permission to fight: Allah defends those who have believed, and He does not love anyone treacherous and ungrateful.

• When facing other people's harmful plans, turn to Allah in trust and repentance rather than treating their power as the final word.
• Take promises seriously: faith should not become an excuse for saying one thing and doing another.
• Practise gratitude by recognising and appreciating Allah's blessings instead of taking them for granted.
• Do not treat reliance on Allah and taking permitted steps to defend against wrongdoing as opposites. The assurance of His protection prepares the ground for the permission that follows.

If they deny you ﷺ, so did the people of Nūḥ, ʿĀd, Thamūd, Ibrāhīm, Lūṭ and Madyan deny their prophets, and Mūsā عليه السلام was denied too — Allah gave them respite, then seized them, and how terrible was that reproach. How many a wrongdoing town has He destroyed, now fallen into ruin, its wells abandoned and its lofty palaces empty. Have they not travelled the earth with hearts to reason and ears to hear? It is not eyes that go blind, but the hearts within the chests. They urge the punishment to hurry, yet a day with Allah is like a thousand years as they count; He never fails His promise. The Prophet ﷺ is told simply to say: 'I am only to you a clear warner' — for those who believe and do good is forgiveness and generous provision, while those who strive to defeat Allah's signs are companions of the Fire.

• Do not treat rejection as proof that a truthful message has failed. Earlier messengers faced denial despite clear evidence; their history offers reassurance when opposition feels overwhelming.
• Let what you see become something you learn from. The ruined towns, unused wells, and empty palaces call for thoughtful attention, not merely a passing glance.
• Do not use a delay in consequences as permission to continue wrongdoing. Allah’s promise does not fail, and everyone’s final return is to Him.
• Respond to the warning with faith and good deeds rather than demands about punishment. The passage directs attention to our response to Allah’s verses, not control over His judgment.

No messenger or prophet was ever sent except that Satan threw something into the delivery of his message, but Allah abolishes what Satan throws in and makes His verses precise. This is so that what Satan throws becomes a trial only for the diseased and hard of heart, while those given knowledge recognise it is the truth from their Lord and their hearts submit to it — Allah is the Guide of believers to a straight path. The disbelievers remain in doubt until the Hour comes suddenly or a barren day's punishment arrives; that Day all sovereignty belongs to Allah, who judges between them, believers bound for gardens of pleasure and disbelievers for humiliating punishment.

• Do not treat the existence of distortion as proof that revelation has failed. Trust Allah's promise to remove interference, and watch how your own heart responds to confusion.
• Seek knowledge that changes your response to Allah, not just knowledge that helps you win an argument. Recognising the truth should deepen humility.
• Do not postpone faithful action as though there will always be more time. The Hour comes unexpectedly, and the promised gardens are linked to belief and righteous deeds.
• Measure success by Allah's final judgment rather than the apparent strength of opposition. Let that perspective encourage good deeds and restrain pride.

Those who emigrated for Allah's cause and then died or were killed will surely be given good provision, admitted to an entrance that pleases them — Allah is Knowing and Forbearing. Whoever responds to injustice with its equivalent, and is then wronged again, will be aided by Allah, who is Pardoning and Forgiving. This is because Allah merges night into day and day into night, because He is the Truth while whatever else is called upon is false, and because He sends down rain that turns the earth green, subjects the earth and the sea's ships to mankind, and restrains the sky from falling except by His permission — He is Kind and Merciful to people.

• Do not judge sacrifice for Allah only by its visible outcome. These emigrants are promised a pleasing reward whether death comes in battle or outside it.
• When wronged, distinguish proportionate justice from escalation, while keeping patience and forgiveness open as the higher path.
• Let the changing lengths of night and day strengthen trust in Allah’s control, and direct worship to Him alone rather than to false objects of devotion.
• Notice ordinary provision and protection—growing plants, usable resources, and safe journeys—and respond with gratitude to Allah, who gives without needing anything from creation.

Allah gave you life, will cause you to die, and will give life again — yet mankind is ungrateful. For every religion Allah appointed rites its people perform, so the Prophet ﷺ is told not to let disbelievers contend with him over this but to invite them to his Lord, upon straight guidance; if they dispute, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. People worship besides Allah what carries no authority and no knowledge, and grow hostile at the mere recitation of His verses. Allah presents a parable: those they invoke besides Him could never create even a fly, nor recover from it what it steals — weak indeed are both the seeker and the sought. They have not appraised Allah with the appraisal due Him; He chooses messengers from among angels and from among people, knowing what is before them and what comes after, and to Him all matters return.

• Let the certainty of resurrection shape your gratitude and conduct: the One who gave you life knows your actions and will judge with complete knowledge.
• Do not let persistent argument replace the purpose of inviting people to Allah. Stay faithful to the message while remembering that Allah knows everyone’s deeds.
• Examine the evidence for religious practices rather than defending them simply because they are familiar, and do not answer clear evidence with hostility.
• Direct worship to Allah rather than powerless substitutes, and receive His chosen messengers as bearers of His message, knowing that every matter returns to Him.
