The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens confirming the Qurʾān as a continuation of earlier revelation, then explains that the Book contains muḥkamāt (precise, foundational āyāt) and mutashābihāt (āyāt open to more than one reading); those with deviation in their hearts pursue the latter seeking discord, while those firm in knowledge submit, saying 'all of it is from our Lord'. This frames the surah's engagement with Najrān's claims about ʿĪsā, built substantially on ambiguous readings of earlier scripture.

• Let revelation correct your assumptions. Read less clear passages through the Book’s clear foundations, believe in the whole revelation, and ask Allāh to keep your heart guided.
• Do not measure security by possessions, family or numbers. Seek Allāh’s lasting approval through patience, truthful conduct, generosity and requests for forgiveness.
• Possessing religious knowledge is not the same as submitting to it. Accept its judgment, resist envy and arrogance, and never replace accountability with invented assurances.
• Rely on Allāh rather than status or compromising loyalties. Examine hidden motives as well as visible deeds, keep hope in His kindness, and express love through following the Prophet ﷺ.

The wife of ʿImrān vows what is in her womb to Allah's service before knowing it would be a daughter; Maryam is placed under Zakariyyā's care, favoured and purified above the women of creation, and receives the announcement of ʿĪsā, born by a word from Allah without a father, as a sign — 'be, and it is'. The surah then directly refutes the claim of divine sonship: ʿĪsā's likeness to Allah is as Ādam's, created from dust and told 'be'.

• Offer your service sincerely and ask Allah to accept it, rather than assuming its value depends on your expectations. Maryam’s upbringing also shows the importance of righteous care and teaching.
• Let signs of Allah’s generosity strengthen prayer, and let His gifts deepen worship. Zakariyyā responded with supplication, while Maryam’s honour came with a call to greater devotion; revelation gives us this history.
• Honour Allah’s messengers without confusing their gifts with independent divine power. ʿĪsā’s birth, knowledge, and miracles direct the believer to obey Allah and worship Him alone.
• Turn belief into support for the truth and righteous action, even when others resist. Human opposition is not the final verdict: Allah governs the outcome and judges with full reward and accountability.
• Let clear revelation and sound comparison correct your assumptions. The comparison with Ādam shows why an extraordinary birth is not evidence of divinity, and the closing warning makes responding honestly to truth a serious responsibility.

Addressing the Christian delegation of Najrān, the surah offers mubāhalah — each side calling their sons, women and selves, and invoking Allah's curse on whoever lies — a call they declined, choosing instead a treaty. The passage then invites the People of the Book to 'a word common between us': worship none but Allah, associate nothing with Him, and take no one as lords besides Him.

• Make religious discussion clear and honest: explain the grounds of belief, invite others to worship Allah alone, and remain firm without disguising real differences.
• Do not let inherited labels replace knowledge or practice. Admit what you do not know and show your connection to Ibrāhīm by following his submission to Allah.
• Do not manipulate another person's faith or conceal truth to protect your group's standing. Seek Allah's guidance and remember that His bounty is not yours to restrict.
• Keep trusts and promises across religious differences. Neither group loyalty nor a short-term profit excuses dishonesty before Allah.
• Distinguish revelation from human claims, and let study produce wisdom and devotion to Allah rather than unquestioning elevation of religious teachers.

Allah took a covenant from every prophet that if a later messenger came confirming what they had, they must believe in him and support him — a covenant the prophets themselves affirmed and bore witness to. Whoever seeks a religion other than submission to Allah, it will not be accepted, and a people who disbelieve after believing, after clear proof came to them, are described as wronging themselves. The passage promises 'you will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love', and clarifies that all food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel (Yaʿqūb, عليه السلام) forbade for himself before the Torah was revealed, restrictions later added by the rabbis. The first house established for mankind is named as the one at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for all people, containing clear signs, among them the station of Ibrāhīm (عليه السلام); pilgrimage to it is a duty owed to Allah by whoever is able. The People of the Book are warned against turning believers away from the path, and believers are commanded to hold firmly to the rope of Allah and not become divided.

• Let loyalty to Allah’s truth outweigh attachment to status or inherited claims. The prophets’ covenant teaches that receiving guidance brings a responsibility to recognise and support confirming truth.
• Respond while the opportunity remains: repent, mend your conduct, and give from what you genuinely value. Neither postponed repentance nor imagined future wealth replaces submission now.
• Ground religious claims in revelation and turn conviction into worship. Following Ibrāhīm means devotion to Allah alone, including honouring the duty of pilgrimage when able.
• Be discerning about influences that pull you away from faith, practise obedience and gratitude, and protect the brotherhood Allah has given. Steadfastness is both a personal responsibility and a shared commitment.

The community is commanded to hold firmly to the rope of Allah together and not divide, recalling how enmity between them was turned into brotherhood by His favour, and how they stood at the edge of a pit of fire before being saved. They are then named the best nation brought out for mankind, enjoining right and forbidding wrong and believing in Allah — a description tied to function, not to birth.

• Build unity through shared obedience, not a shared label alone. Preserve your own faith, help others towards good according to your ability, and treat the community’s honour as a responsibility to fulfil.
• Measure security by your standing before Allāh, not by wealth or family strength. Hold hope in His mercy together with accountability, knowing that His judgement is never unjust.
• Do not let warnings about opponents become blanket judgements about everyone of their background. Recognise sincere faith, worship, and goodness wherever the passage recognises them.
• Be careful whom you trust with sensitive affairs. Notice demonstrated hostility rather than relying only on friendly claims, and meet ill will with patience and mindfulness of Allāh.

The surah walks through Uḥud in close narrative detail: the Prophet ﷺ positioning the army at dawn, the promise of Allah fulfilled as the enemy was routed, until weakness, disputing over the order, and disobedience after victory was shown to them led to reversal — some desiring this world, some the Hereafter. Allah then turned them back from the enemy to test them, and forgave them, before the command 'do not weaken and do not grieve, you will be superior if you are believers'.

• Prepare responsibly, remain patient, and rely on Allah rather than numbers or visible support. Receiving help calls for gratitude, not a claim to control outcomes or other people’s final judgment.
• Practise obedience in ordinary decisions: reject usury, give through changing circumstances, restrain anger, and pardon others. When you fail, seek forgiveness and stop knowingly continuing the wrong.
• Do not measure Allah’s care by one success or setback. Let revelation and the experience of earlier believers teach you to turn good intentions into tested patience.
• Keep commitment to Allah steady when shocking news or outside pressure shakes confidence. Examine what reward you seek, and combine perseverance with prayers for forgiveness and firmness.
• Do not let apparent success make obedience seem optional. After failure, acknowledge the choices that contributed to it, trust Allah’s knowledge and decree, and accept His forgiveness as a reason to return rather than give up.

Rather than harshness after the army's failure, the Prophet ﷺ is described as lenient by a mercy from Allah; had he been harsh they would have scattered, so he is commanded to pardon them, seek forgiveness for them, consult them, and then rely on Allah once resolved. The martyrs of Uḥud are described as alive with their Lord, receiving provision, and rejoicing both for themselves and for those left behind who have not yet joined them.

• After failure or bereavement, distinguish honest responsibility from hopeless regret. Allāh forgave those who retreated, life and death belong to Him, and His mercy matters more than worldly gain.
• When people you lead make mistakes, respond with mercy rather than driving them away. Pardon, seek forgiveness for them, keep consulting, and follow a considered decision with reliance on Allāh.
• Let the Messenger's ﷺ teaching shape both knowledge and character. Guard entrusted wealth and seek Allāh's pleasure, remembering that He sees deeds and will judge without injustice.
• Review setbacks without using Allāh's decree to excuse your choices. Own disobedience, make your words match your heart, and do not claim that your preferred course could have controlled death.
• Do not measure faithfulness only by visible loss or danger. Allāh honours the martyrs and preserves believers' reward; answer Him with good conduct and trust rather than allowing intimidation to govern you.

Believers are told not to be grieved by those who race into disbelief, for they harm only themselves and will have no share in the Hereafter; Allah gives disbelievers time only so they may increase in sin, leading to a painful punishment. Wealth and children given to disbelievers are not a sign of Allah's approval but a trial that increases their punishment. Believers, righteous or wrongdoing, will be sorted and known by Allah, who distinguishes the bad from the good. Every soul will taste death, and everyone is paid back in full only on the Day of Judgement, when whoever is saved from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has truly succeeded, this worldly life being nothing but a deceiving enjoyment. The People of the Book who were given a covenant to make clear what they had of scripture and not conceal it are rebuked for hiding it and taking a small price instead, and those who rejoice in what they have done and love to be praised for what they did not do are warned they will not escape punishment. The closing signs point to reflection on the creation of the heavens and earth for people of understanding.

• Care about people’s guidance without treating their rejection or apparent prosperity as the final verdict. Attend to your own faith and mindfulness of Allah rather than claiming knowledge of hidden outcomes.
• Let wealth and religious claims lead to honest responsibility, not withholding, mockery, or excuses for rejecting clear guidance. Your words and deeds matter even when others dismiss the truth.
• Measure success by the Hereafter, not by an easy life. When possessions, personal wellbeing, or hurtful speech test you, practise patience without letting go of mindfulness of Allah.
• Be trustworthy with both knowledge and credit: do not hide beneficial truth for gain or seek recognition for work you have not done.
• Keep your sense of control in perspective: possessions and influence do not make you the ultimate owner; all dominion and power belong to Allah.

The surah's closing theme praises those of understanding who see signs in the creation of the heavens and earth and the alternation of night and day, remembering Allah standing, sitting and lying on their sides, reflecting on creation and concluding 'Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose'. The surah ends urging patience, steadfastness, readiness and taqwā for success.

• Make familiar sights an occasion for worship: notice creation carefully, remember Allah, and let reflection lead to prayer rather than stopping at admiration.
• Combine concern about accountability with trust in Allah’s promise. Ask for forgiveness and a righteous ending without treating your present faith as a reason to stop seeking His help.
• When sacrifice seems unrewarded and others appear to prosper, judge neither by appearances. Allah preserves faithful work, while worldly enjoyment is brief beside the final outcome.
• Hold to revealed truth even when compromise offers a gain. Join humility and honesty with endurance and mindfulness of Allah.
