The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens with Allah instructing the Prophet ﷺ to relay what was revealed to him: a group of jinn heard the Qurʾān, called it 'ʿajaban' (wondrous), recognised that it guides to right conduct, believed at once, and immediately drew the correct theological conclusions — Allah has no partner, no spouse, no child, and their own foolish kind had spoken falsehood about Him.

• Let listening to the Qurʾān lead beyond admiration to belief and a willingness to follow its guidance.
• Speak about Allah with care. Honour His greatness by rejecting claims that give Him a spouse or child.
• Be willing to revise familiar religious assumptions. A claim is not reliable merely because many people accept it or because you cannot imagine someone lying about Allah.
• Do not let fear push you into seeking refuge with jinn. A practice that promises safety may instead deepen fear and dependence.

The jinn recount their own recent discovery: the sky, which they used to sit in to overhear fragments of unseen news, is now filled with fierce guards and meteors. Any who tries to listen now finds a flame lying in ambush for him. They admit they do not know whether this signals evil intended for the people of the earth or guidance intended for them.

• Recognise the protection of revelation as a mercy: Allah guarded His Book so that people would not confuse it with soothsayers’ claims.
• Separate what you observe from what you can explain. A striking change does not give you certainty about Allah’s hidden purpose.
• Be willing to say, “I do not know.” The jinn’s admission leaves no basis for treating them as if they know every unseen outcome.
• Speak about Allah with care and respect, noticing how the jinn explicitly credit their Lord with guidance.

The jinn describe their own community as they describe humanity: some righteous, some otherwise, following divergent paths. Once they heard true guidance they believed, understanding that no one can escape Allah by flight on earth. They divide themselves into Muslims (those submitting) and qāsiṭūn (those deviating from justice) — the latter becoming firewood for Hell. Allah then adds that had all people, jinn and human, stayed steadfastly on the right way, He would have granted them abundant provision as a test, but whoever turns from His remembrance will be driven into an ever-mounting punishment.

• Do not let belonging to a community replace responsibility for your own choices. The jinn’s divisions show that shared origin does not mean shared guidance or outcomes.
• Respond to accountability by accepting guidance rather than trying to evade it. Allah’s complete power is paired here with assurance that believers will not be treated unjustly.
• When provision increases, consider how you use it rather than treating it as proof of spiritual success. Abundance can itself be a test.
• Make listening to guidance lead to a response. The passage contrasts believing upon hearing the Qurʾān with turning away from the Lord’s remembrance.

The tafsīr in brief

A sharp, standalone declaration in the middle of the jinn's account: places of prostration belong to Allah, so no one should be called upon alongside Him there or anywhere. It is followed by the description of the crowds who almost pressed upon the Prophet ﷺ in astonishment when he stood to worship his Lord.

• Keep supplication, prostration, and vows for Allah alone wherever you are; worship does not change its rightful recipient outside a masjid.
• Let prostration remind you that both the place where you worship and the body you worship with belong in Allah’s service.
• Let the jinn’s eagerness to hear the Qurʾān encourage you to listen attentively rather than treat recitation as background sound.
• Follow the Prophet’s ﷺ example by directing prayer to Allah: the Messenger is shown worshipping his Lord, not receiving worship.

The surah closes by returning the Prophet ﷺ to a plain declaration: he calls only upon his Lord and associates no one with Him; he owns no power to harm or to guide anyone; no one could shield him from Allah if he disobeyed, and his only role is to convey the message. The unseen belongs to Allah alone, disclosed to no one — except a messenger He is pleased to choose, whom He then surrounds with observers (angels) before and behind, so that it becomes known that the messages have truly been conveyed and nothing is lost of them, for Allah encompasses and enumerates everything.

• Honour the Messenger ﷺ without giving him Allah's powers. Follow his example by directing worship to Allah and seeking refuge in Him.
• Take the message seriously rather than measuring its truth by the number of its supporters. Conveyance belongs to the Messenger ﷺ; the final judgement belongs to Allah.
• Replace speculation about the Hour's date with preparation for it. Admitting that its timing is unknown follows the Prophet's ﷺ own example.
• Distinguish Allah's complete knowledge from what He chooses to reveal. Trust safeguarded revelation rather than claims of unaided access to the unseen.
