The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens by quoting the hypocrites' own words — 'we testify that you are the Messenger of Allah' — only to immediately expose the gap between their speech and their hearts: Allah already knows the Prophet ﷺ is His Messenger, so their oath adds nothing; it is their sincerity, not the content of the statement, that is condemned as false.

• When speaking about faith, care about whether your words honestly express your belief, not merely whether they sound correct.
• Do not use religious promises to escape accountability. In this passage, oaths protect harmful conduct rather than express honesty.
• Be careful about whom you imitate: a convincing religious appearance can draw others into harmful behaviour.
• Do not treat an earlier profession of faith as enough. Take your present belief and receptiveness to the truth seriously.

The surah describes the hypocrites' impressive appearance and articulate speech, which mask cowardice and inner emptiness — 'as if they were pieces of wood propped up', mistaking every shout for a threat against themselves. It records Ibn Ubayy's boast that the powerful would expel the humble from Madinah, and answers that honour (al-ʿizzah) truly belongs to Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the believers.

• Do not let impressive speech or appearance replace attention to character. This warning calls for discernment, not automatic suspicion of anyone who presents well.
• When offered a way to seek forgiveness, respond with humility rather than defending your pride. These verses show the seriousness of arrogantly rejecting that invitation.
• Do not use money or social standing to pressure others away from faithfulness. Neither provision nor honour is ultimately yours to control.
• Measure honour by its relationship to Allah, not by the size of a following or the influence of a family or tribe.

The tafsīr in brief

The surah closes with a warning addressed to all believers, not only hypocrites: wealth and children must not distract from the remembrance of Allah, for whoever lets that happen is truly among the losers. It ends with the regret of death — a plea to be granted a little more time to give charity and become righteous — met with the sobering reply that no soul is given respite once its appointed term arrives.

• Examine whether earning money or caring for family is crowding out remembrance and obedience to Allah; being a believer does not remove this risk.
• Turn wealth from a distraction into an opportunity for good by spending from what Allah has provided.
• Do not save generosity for an ideal future moment. Use present opportunities rather than relying on time you have not been promised.
• Let Allah’s awareness of your actions shape your everyday choices, including those that other people do not notice.
