The tafsīr in brief

Allah swears by the pen and what it writes that His Messenger ﷺ is not, as they claimed, majnūn (possessed or mad). Instead he has a reward without end and stands upon a great moral character (khuluq ʿaẓīm) — and soon both he and they will see which side truly suffers from a diseased mind.

• Treat writing as a gift for gaining and sharing knowledge; use what you write for something beneficial.
• Do not make public approval the measure of worth. The Prophet ﷺ faced a false accusation while Allah affirmed His favour and promised him lasting reward.
• Let learning the Qurʾān change your conduct: identify a command to practise or a prohibition to avoid, rather than stopping at knowing the words.
• Be patient when truth is disputed, and humble about your own judgments. What people will eventually see is already fully known to Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ is told not to obey those who deny the truth, nor to compromise even if they wished him to soften his stance. Ten traits are listed describing a particular chief among the deniers — a habitual swearer, a fault-finder, a slanderer, an obstructer of good, transgressor, sinner, coarse, and moreover of doubtful lineage — concluding that such a man will be branded on the snout on the Day of Judgement.

• Do not trade revealed truth for acceptance. Recognise when an offer of friendliness depends on abandoning what is right.
• Judge speech by its truthfulness and its effects, not by emphatic oaths. Refuse to carry stories that damage relationships.
• Examine conduct as well as words: do you help good happen, respect limits, and resist cruelty? Harmful character is expressed in what a person does.
• Do not confuse prosperity with moral authority. Receive revelation seriously rather than allowing status or comfort to make you dismissive of it.

Allah tries the Makkan deniers as He tried the owners of a garden who swore to harvest it early in secret, so that no poor person could claim a share. A visitation from their Lord struck it in the night and left it like a barren field. When the most balanced among them reminded them to have praised Allah, they finally acknowledged their wrongdoing and hoped their Lord might give them better in exchange.

• Treat blessings as a test, not a guarantee. Make plans with dependence on Allah rather than assuming their outcome is yours to control.
• Examine whom your plans exclude. Careful organisation and shared determination do not make a selfish purpose right.
• Listen when someone challenges a group's wrongdoing, and accept your own responsibility instead of stopping at blame.
• Turn to Allah with hope after wrongdoing, while taking the warning of the Hereafter seriously. Hope is not an entitlement to recovered wealth.

Those mindful of Allah will have gardens of delight with their Lord. Allah then challenges the deniers directly: should those who submit to Him be treated the same as those who do wrong? What is wrong with you, how do you judge? Do they have a scripture that teaches them this, or oaths binding Him to give them whatever they claim? Let them bring forward their partners if they are telling the truth.

• Let the promise of Gardens encourage mindfulness and obedience, rather than assuming that your conduct makes no difference.
• Before treating a comforting belief about Allah as certain, ask whether it rests on His revelation or only on what you want to be true.
• Take responsibility for claims you repeat; a confident group assertion still needs someone able to answer for it.
• Do not mistake claimed support for proof. Ask whether the support can actually be produced.

On the Day when matters become extremely severe — described as the shin being bared — the deniers will be called to prostrate and will be unable to, their eyes humbled, having refused to prostrate in this world while they were whole and able. The Prophet ﷺ is told to leave those who deny this discourse to Allah, who will draw them on by degrees from where they do not perceive.

• Use your present ability to worship sincerely. These verses warn against both refusing worship and performing it merely to impress others.
• Do not confuse comfort or extra time with freedom from accountability. Let ease prompt self-examination rather than complacency.
• Examine the reasons behind rejecting guidance: an imagined burden or unsupported confidence about the unseen is not a sound basis for judgement.

The tafsīr in brief

The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to wait patiently for his Lord's judgement and not to be like the Companion of the Fish (Yūnus عليه السلام), who cried out in distress while choked with grief; had a mercy from his Lord not reached him, he would have been cast onto the barren shore in blame. The surah closes by noting how the deniers, in their intense malice, almost 'strike him down with their glances' — yet the Qurʾān remains a reminder to all the worlds.

• When rejection makes you impatient, distinguish turning to Allah in distress from acting hastily out of frustration. Patience leaves room for prayer.
• Do not let a lesson about someone’s mistake erase Allah’s mercy or their honour. Yūnus عليه السلام is presented as chosen and righteous, not defined only by his haste.
• Guard against resenting the good influence someone has on others. Envy can turn a person against the very message that could benefit them.
• Do not measure the Qurʾān’s worth by the insults directed at it or its messenger. Approach it as a reminder even when others respond with hostility.
