Sūrah An-NajmThe Star · Makkah · 62 āyāt · 5 movements

A Makkan surah that opens with an oath by the star as it sets, then recounts the Prophet's ﷺ direct encounter with the angel Jibrīl — twice, including at Sidrat al-Muntahā on the night of the Miʿrāj. It refutes the worship of the goddesses al-Lāt, al-ʿUzzā and Manāt as empty names, affirms that no soul bears another's burden, that man attains only what he strives for, and closes with a call to prostrate to the One who alone creates, gives life and death, and brings the final Hour. It is the first surah the Prophet ﷺ recited publicly at the Kaʿbah, and every listener — believer, polytheist, jinn and man — prostrated with him.

Occasion & setting

Revealed at a time when Quraysh had grown accustomed to hearing the Qurʾān only privately. The Prophet ﷺ stood among them at the Kaʿbah and recited an-Najm aloud to its end, at which point he prostrated, and the entire gathering — Muslims, polytheists, jinn, even those who had been hostile — prostrated with him, overcome by its power.

Key messages

· The Qurʾān is verified revelation, not the Prophet's ﷺ own invention — confirmed by an oath and by his composed reporting of what he saw.
· Weak or sensational reports must be tested against sound chains and the Qurʾān's own words — fame does not make a narration true.
· Names given to false objects of worship carry no authority unless Allah sends it down.
· No one inherits or borrows another's record; every soul is bound to its own striving.
· Every pair in creation, male and female, points to a deliberate Creator.
· Past nations destroyed for denial are warnings meant to be reflected upon, not distant tales.
· The Hour is described as ever 'approaching' — nearness, not distance, is the honest description of the unseen future.
· The proper response to revelation is humility and prostration, not amusement or heedlessness.
