A concise Makkan surah that opens by affirming the revelation is beyond doubt, then moves through the creation of the heavens and earth in six days, the stages of forming a human being, and a description of true believers whose sides forsake their beds to call upon their Lord in fear and hope. It closes by contrasting the believer and the defiantly disobedient, and by pointing to earlier destroyed nations and the Israelites given the Book and made leaders through patience and certainty.

Occasion & setting

Revealed during a phase when Quraysh mocked the idea of resurrection outright, denying that a body reduced to dust and scattered could ever be reassembled and questioned. The surah answers by pointing first to the precision of the original creation — of the heavens and of man himself — as evidence that the same power can recreate.
