The tafsīr in brief

Alif, Lām, Mīm. [This is] the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds. Or do they say, he has invented it? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord so that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you.

• Recognise the limits of the explanation before you: when this excerpt refers elsewhere for the opening letters, do not supply an unsupported meaning yourself.
• Approach the Qur’an as revelation to be followed, not merely as human advice to be weighed against personal preference.
• Keep guidance as the purpose of a religious warning; aim to help people follow the truth rather than merely win an argument.
• Remember that people may be far removed from earlier guidance. Let that need shape the care with which you explain the message.

The tafsīr in brief

It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, then established Himself above the Throne. You have not besides Him any protector or intercessor. He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.

• Examine where you place your ultimate trust: no supposed protector or intercessor has authority independent of Allah.
• Remember Allah not only when thinking about how creation began, but also when facing the affairs of daily life: His governance continues.
• Let the immense scale described in this verse encourage humility about your own limited view of how affairs unfold.
• Take your hidden actions seriously without losing hope: Allah’s knowledge of the unseen is mentioned alongside His might and mercy.

He who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained. Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

• Remember your humble beginnings when pride arises. Human abilities do not erase dependence on the One who created you.
• Make gratitude practical: choose to use your hearing, sight and reasoning in ways that help you obey Allah.
• Do not stop at hearing guidance. Give yourself time to understand it and let its meaning reach your heart.
• Reflect on both your beginnings and your present abilities: the passage invites you to recognise gifts that can easily be taken for granted.

And they say, when we are lost within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation? Rather, they are, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers. Say, the angel of death who is charged with you will take you, then to your Lord you will be returned.

• When something seems impossible to you, distinguish the limits of human ability from the power of the One who first created you.
• Do not let discussion of what happens to the body obscure the passage’s central concern: meeting your Lord.
• Think of death as an entrusted, ordered event rather than a random ending with nothing beyond it.
• Let the certainty of return shape your choices now: resurrection leads to reward or punishment, not merely another existence.

If you could but see when the guilty ones hang their heads before their Lord, [saying], 'Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will do righteousness. Indeed, we are now certain.' And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect: 'I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together.' So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do.

• Turn what you hear of the truth into righteous action now, rather than waiting until accountability makes it impossible to deny.
• Do not mistake widespread disbelief for a limit on Allah’s power to guide; take His warning seriously.
• Let remembering the meeting with Allah shape your choices, rather than treating accountability as something unrelated to daily life.
• Measure readiness by present deeds, not by promises about what you would do if given another chance.

Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant. Their sides forsake their beds, and they supplicate their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend from what We have provided them. No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.

• When a Qur’anic reminder challenges you, look for a way to obey it rather than defending your pride.
• Make room for voluntary night prayer, calling on Allah with both concern about His punishment and hope in His reward.
• Let devotion shape both your worship and your use of wealth: a humble response to Allah should not leave generosity behind.
• Keep doing good without demanding an immediate, visible return; Allah’s promised reward exceeds what you can presently know.

Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal. As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them are the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.

• When faithfulness seems to make no difference, remember that Allah’s final judgment does not erase the difference between obedience and rejection.
• Give belief a practical expression through sustained righteous deeds rather than leaving good intentions unfulfilled.
• Read the promise and warning together: let the promised welcome encourage obedience, and let the warning keep accountability serious.
• Do not confuse dismissing a warning with escaping its consequences. Take the warning of judgment seriously now.

And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment, that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]. And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord, then turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.

• Let hardship prompt you to examine your priorities and return to Allah, rather than waiting for life to become comfortable before repenting.
• When Allah’s verses challenge your choices, take the reminder seriously instead of dismissing what you have understood.
• Hold hope and accountability together: an opportunity to return is a mercy, but it is not permission to persist in rejection.

And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting; and We made it guidance for the Children of Israel. And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and were certain of Our signs.

• When helping others find guidance, keep revealed teaching at the centre rather than making your own authority the focus.
• Practise patience as steady obedience: keep doing what Allah commands and avoiding what He forbids, even when it is difficult.
• Do not treat family background or status as a substitute for spiritual growth. Cultivate patience and certainty through sincere effort.
• Remember during disagreements that neither side’s insistence is the final verdict. Allah will judge what people disputed.

Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they now walk? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear? Have they not seen that We drive the water to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat, and they themselves? Then do they not see? And they say, 'When is this Decisive Day, if you should be truthful?' Say, 'On the Day of Decision, the belief of those who disbelieved will not benefit them, nor will they be reprieved.' So turn away from them and wait; indeed, they [too] are waiting.

• Let encounters with the past prompt moral reflection. Seeing what remains of earlier peoples should lead to learning from their rejection of guidance.
• Use ordinary experiences of rain, growth, and food as reminders of Allah's power to give life, rather than overlooking them because they are familiar.
• Respond to the warning while belief can benefit you, rather than making action depend on knowing when judgment will arrive.
• Do not let mockery draw you into endless argument. The Prophet's ﷺ instruction here offers a lesson in stepping back and waiting for Allah's outcome.
