The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens with mysterious letters, then affirms that Allah reveals to this Prophet ﷺ as He revealed to those before him, and that He is the Exalted, the Wise. The heavens are almost rent asunder from above them in awe of Him, and the angels glorify their Lord and seek forgiveness for those on earth.

• Approach revelation with humility: do not invent explanations for the opening letters, and recognise the Qur’an as part of the continuing revelation Allah sent to His prophets.
• Receive Allah’s message with both reverence and hope. His greatness calls for seriousness, while the angels’ prayers and His forgiveness keep that seriousness from becoming despair.
• Share the warning faithfully without treating another person’s response as something you control. Keep attention on the certain meeting with Allah rather than on winning an argument.
• Seek Allah’s mercy and protection rather than security in false protectors. Human disagreement does not weaken the power of the One who will raise the dead.

Whatever you differ in of a matter, its ruling is to Allah. He is the Creator of the heavens and earth who made pairs for you, nothing is like Him, and He has ordained for you the religion He enjoined upon Nūḥ, and what He has revealed to this Prophet ﷺ, and what He enjoined upon Ibrāhīm, Mūsā and ʿĪsā: to establish religion and not be divided in it.

• When religious disagreement arises, seek guidance from revelation rather than making personal preference the final judge. Aim to uphold Allah's religion without creating division.
• Speak about Allah's hearing and seeing without imagining Him as resembling His creation.
• In times of plenty or hardship, renew your reliance on Allah: provision remains under His control and within His complete knowledge.
• Recognise the shared call of the messengers to worship Allah alone, without assuming that every detail of their laws was identical.

Earlier communities only split into factions after knowledge had come to them, out of insolent rivalry between them, and had it not been for a word already decreed by Allah to delay their reckoning, the matter would have been settled between them. Because of this, the Prophet ﷺ is commanded to call people to the religion, to stay straight as he was commanded, to say 'I believe in whatever Book Allah has sent down,' and to be fair between people, declaring: 'Allah is our Lord and your Lord. For us are our deeds, and for you your deeds. There is no argument between us and you.' The passage adds that Allah is fully aware of everyone's deeds, that the Hour is coming and that He responds to those who believe and do good, giving them more from His bounty.

• When disagreement becomes personal, examine rivalry in yourself before multiplying arguments. Remain firm in revealed guidance and fair toward others rather than trying to pull people away from faith.
• Let Allah’s revelation and justice set your standard, not confident accusations or unauthorized religious claims. Delayed judgment is no reason to dismiss accountability.
• Do not measure your standing by worldly provision. Direct your effort toward the Hereafter and keep doing good, trusting Allah’s promise to increase its reward.
• Respond to your failures by repenting, not giving up. Continue praying and doing good with hope in Allah’s pardon and generosity.

If Allah increased provision for His servants without measure, they would transgress on earth, so He sends down in measured amount as He wills. Whatever calamity befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much. Whatever you have been given is but the enjoyment of worldly life, while what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe and rely upon their Lord.

• When provision feels limited or relief seems late, resist despair. Allah knows His servants, measures their provision, and can bring mercy after hope has faded.
• Let hardship prompt repentance without losing hope in Allah's pardon. Examine your own actions rather than using another person's suffering to accuse them of a particular sin.
• Remember accountability when making choices: the One who can gather all creation cannot be escaped, and no other protector can place you beyond His power.
• Look beyond impressive human achievements to the blessings that make them possible. Practise gratitude when things move smoothly and patience when progress stops.
• Before pursuing a temporary gain, ask whether it serves your lasting good with Allah. Let the promise of enduring reward shape your priorities.

The tafsīr in brief

Those who avoid major sins and immoralities, and when angered they forgive; who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, and conduct their affairs by mutual consultation among themselves; who spend from what We have provided them; and who, when wronged, defend themselves justly — yet whoever is patient and forgives, that is of the matters requiring great resolve.

• Let lasting reward shape everyday priorities: trust Allah, maintain prayer, seek others’ views, and share what He has provided.
• Treat anger as a moment to practise resolve. Forgiveness does not require feeling no anger; it requires refusing to let anger dictate revenge.
• Seeking justice is permitted, but being wronged does not justify excess. Keep any response proportionate, and remember the promised reward for pardon and reconciliation.

Whoever Allah leaves astray has no protector to help him after that, and on the Day of Judgement the wrongdoers will be seen looking at the punishment, humbled and afraid, asking whether there is any way back. The people are called to respond to their Lord before a Day comes from Allah that cannot be turned back; on that Day there will be no refuge and no possibility of denial. If people turn away, the Prophet ﷺ is not sent as a guardian over them, his duty is only to deliver the message. The surah closes by affirming that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what He wills, granting daughters to whom He wills and sons to whom He wills, or combining them as both sons and daughters, and making whoever He wills barren, for He is All-Knowing and Powerful.

• Do not mistake worldly support for lasting safety. Seek Allah's guidance rather than relying on alliances that cannot protect you at judgement.
• Turn the warning about judgement into obedience today, rather than postponing your response until there is no refuge.
• When sharing the message, take responsibility for conveying it faithfully without assuming that you control another person's response.
• Notice whether your gratitude disappears when life becomes difficult. Hardship should prompt honest self-examination rather than denial of Allah's mercy.
• Receive daughters and sons without resentment, and do not treat any family as entitled to a particular outcome. Having daughters, sons, both, or no children falls under Allah's ownership and will.

It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger [angel] to reveal by His permission what He wills. Thus We have revealed to you an inspired Book by Our command, guiding to a straight path — the path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth.

• Learn about revelation through the ways Allah describes, rather than assuming that hearing Him must involve seeing Him.
• Approach the Qur’an as nourishment for your heart: give attention to what it teaches, not only to how much you have read.
• Let revealed guidance shape what you believe about faith, instead of treating personal impressions as a substitute for what Allah has taught.
• When making a difficult choice, ask which course follows Allah’s guidance and remember that the matter ultimately returns to Him.
