The surah opens by naming the disease before naming the cure: at-takāthur, competing to have more — more wealth, more children, more followers, more status — until it occupies you so completely that you visit the graveyard itself as part of the competition, or are stopped from anything of real worth only by death.

• Check what your ambitions are displacing. A pursuit needs correcting when keeping ahead of others takes priority over obedience to Allah.
• Do not make preparation for the Hereafter depend on finally having enough. The pursuit of more can continue until death.
• Assess wealth by the benefit it brings, including what you give in charity, rather than treating the amount you possess as your achievement.
• Do not turn family history into a contest of superiority. The explanation about counting dead ancestors shows how far rivalry over numbers can reach.

A double warning, repeated for emphasis: no, soon you will know; then again — no, soon you will know. Commentators read this repetition as pointing first to the reality that will become clear at death, and then again at the resurrection — certainty arriving in two stages.

• When comparison drives your choices, question the competition itself—not just whether you are winning.
• Do not wait for death to expose misplaced priorities. Make room for seeking the Hereafter while you can still change your choices.
• Assess wealth by its real benefit, including what you give in charity, rather than by how impressive your possessions look to others.
• Give a repeated warning renewed attention rather than dismissing it as something you have already heard.

The surah pivots from warning to a conditional: if you knew with the knowledge of certainty (ʿilm al-yaqīn), your behaviour would change now. Then it names what that knowledge concerns — you will surely see the Blazing Fire — and intensifies it further: you will see it with the eye of certainty (ʿayn al-yaqīn), that is, direct witnessing, not mere inference.

• Measure the effect of your knowledge by your priorities: is awareness of the Hereafter weakening the urge to outdo others?
• Do not treat what you cannot yet see as unimportant. The Fire that is warned of now will be witnessed directly.
• Turn concern about the Hereafter into a practical change in how you use wealth: giving charity offers a different direction from endlessly seeking more.

The final verse universalises the reckoning: then, on that Day, you will surely be asked about an-naʿīm — the blessing, comfort and ease you enjoyed. It is the natural conclusion to a surah about competing for more: everything gained will be the subject of a question, not just a possession.

• Notice everyday blessings rather than reserving gratitude for extraordinary gains: health, a meal and a safe place to rest all count.
• Let future accountability shape present choices. Ask how you use what you have, not simply how much more you can acquire.
• Do not let enjoying and pursuing worldly comforts crowd out preparation for the Hereafter.
• Make charity part of your relationship with wealth. The Prophet ﷺ challenges the possessive cry of “My wealth” by drawing attention to what a person actually consumes, wears out or gives away.
