Sūrah At-TakwīrThe Overthrowing / The Folding Up · Makkah · 29 āyāt · 4 movements

One of the earliest Makkan surahs, painting the Day of Judgement as cosmic unmaking — the sun folded up, the stars falling, mountains set in motion, seas set ablaze. It then turns to a scene of moral reckoning: the buried infant girl asking for what crime she was killed. The surah closes by defending the Messenger ﷺ and the angel Jibrīl who brought him the revelation, and ends with the balance between human will and Allah's overriding will.

Occasion & setting

Revealed while Quraysh still doubted the very possibility of resurrection and mocked the Prophet ﷺ as one who merely repeated a madman's or a poet's words. At-Takwīr answers by depicting the Hour with vivid intensity, and by defending both the sanity of the Messenger ﷺ and the truthfulness of Jibrīl عليه السلام who conveyed the revelation to him.

· Nothing in creation — sun, sea, or mountain — is too grand to be undone by its Creator.
· The record of your deeds is never lost; it is kept precisely so it can be opened before you.
· The murdered innocent will be heard on the Day of Judgement, even when no one heard her in this life.

· Seeing Jibrīl on the clear horizon was real; the Prophet ﷺ was neither mad nor mistaken.

· You are given a genuine choice to walk straight — and that very choice exists within Allah's all-encompassing will.
· Cosmic collapse and personal accountability are two sides of the same warning: everything ends, and everyone answers.
