The tafsīr in brief

By the Mount, and a Book inscribed in parchment unrolled, and the frequented House, and the elevated ceiling, and the sea set on fire — indeed, the punishment of your Lord will occur; there is none to avert it.

• Approach revelation with attention and respect. The opening draws attention both to the Mount associated with Allah speaking to Mūsā عليه السلام and to a Book written on open parchment.
• Let the angels’ worship encourage humility in your own worship: devotion to Allah is not limited to the people you can see.
• Do not stop at the striking images of heaven and sea. Follow the passage to its message: the Lord whose creation displays His power gives a warning that must be taken seriously.
• Do not postpone taking Allah’s warning seriously on the assumption that its consequences can always be negotiated away.

On the Day the sky will sway with circular motion and the mountains will pass on, moving away — woe that Day to the deniers who were engaged in vain discourse. They will be pushed toward the Fire with a violent push and told: this is the Fire you used to deny; is this magic, or do you not see?

• Do not mistake the world's apparent stability for permanence. Let the moving sky and mountains challenge a false sense of security.
• Pay attention to how you discuss serious truths. Empty amusement can become a way of avoiding an honest response to a warning.
• Dismissing a warning does not remove what it warns about. Consider the message rather than using a label to brush it aside.
• Take responsibility for your choices now rather than relying on your ability to endure their consequences later.

Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure, enjoying what their Lord has given them; eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do, reclining on thrones arranged in rows. Their descendants who followed them in faith are joined with them, without loss to their own deeds. They approach one another asking about their past life, saying: before, we were fearful among our people, but Allah conferred favour upon us and protected us from the punishment of the scorching wind — we used to call upon Him before; indeed, He is the Most Kind, the Merciful.

• Let the promise of Paradise encourage good deeds, while remembering that both enjoyment and protection from punishment are gifts from Allah.
• Value companionship that brings comfort without harmful speech or sin. This picture of Paradise includes shared enjoyment and conversation, not only possessions.
• Nurture faith within your family. The promise of reunion honours family bonds maintained in faith, rather than making ancestry a substitute for belief.
• Call upon Allah during uncertainty, and keep thanking Him when relief comes. Safety should deepen gratitude, not make earlier prayers and fears disappear from memory.

So remind, for by the favour of your Lord you are neither a soothsayer nor mad. Or do they say, 'A poet, we await for him a misfortune of time'? Say: wait, and I too am waiting with you. Or do their minds command them to this, or are they a transgressing people? Or do they say he has fabricated it? Rather, they do not believe. Then let them produce a discourse like it, if they are truthful.

• Do not let unfair labels alone make you abandon a sound responsibility. The command to remind continues even while the accusations are being rejected.
• Do not confuse someone’s hopes for your failure with proof that they are right. The opponents expected an end to the message, but the reply directed them to the eventual outcome.
• Examine what drives your rejection of a message. A confident accusation is not a substitute for honest reasoning and willingness to believe.
• Ask what evidence would support a serious claim. The accusation of forgery is answered with a concrete challenge, not merely a competing label.

Or were they created by nothing, or are they the creators [of themselves]? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.

• Let reflection on your own existence nurture humility: you did not bring yourself into being, and you depend on Allah as your Creator.
• Examine whether acknowledging Allah as Creator shapes your worship, rather than remaining something you merely say.
• Make room for thoughtful listening to the Qurʾān. Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim’s experience shows that its message can deeply affect someone who does not yet believe.

A series of rhetorical questions confronts the deniers: do they possess the treasuries of your Lord, or have control over them? Do they have a ladder by which they listen to revelation — then let their listener produce clear proof. Does He have daughters while they have sons? Or do you ask them for payment, so they are weighed down by debt? Or do they know the unseen, so they write it down? Or do they intend a plot — but the ones who disbelieve are the ones who will be caught by the plot. Or do they have another god besides Allah? Exalted is He above what they associate. Even if they saw a fragment falling from the sky, they would say it is merely clouds piled up. So leave them until they meet their Day in which they will be struck dead with fear, the Day their plotting will not avail them at all, and they will not be helped. And indeed, for those who wrong themselves there is a punishment before that; but most of them do not know.

• Do not mistake confidence for authority. Claims about Allah’s provision or the unseen need proof, not an impressive claim to hidden access.
• Examine whether your objections are consistent and fair. Personal preferences and imagined burdens are no sound basis for rejecting Allah’s message.
• Do not confuse successful plotting with lasting safety. Accountability remains even when people appear able to arrange everything in their favour.
• Be willing to learn from warnings rather than dismiss them. When hardship passes, let repentance endure instead of returning to the same wrongdoing.

So be patient for the decision of your Lord, for indeed you are in Our eyes; and glorify the praise of your Lord when you arise. And in a part of the night glorify Him, and after the retreat of the stars.

• When rejection continues, do not treat it as proof of being abandoned. The Prophet ﷺ received reassurance of Allah’s care amid rejection itself.
• Make arising an occasion to praise Allah, so that your attention turns to Him as you begin again.
• Give patience a practical expression through worship. A regular opportunity for prayer at night or around dawn can help turn endurance into active devotion.
