The tafsīr in brief

A Book whose āyāt have been detailed, an Arabic Qurʾān for a people who know — a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear. And they say: our hearts are within coverings from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work — we are working. But if they turn away, then say: I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of ʿĀd and Thamūd.

• Approach the Qurʾān as guidance from the Merciful: seek to understand its clear message, receiving both its encouragement and its warnings.
• Do not turn resistance into an identity. The passage offers another response: turn sincerely to Allah, seek forgiveness, and join belief with good deeds.
• Let reflection on the earth, its provision, and the heavens lead beyond admiration to worship of their Creator alone.
• Treat warnings about earlier peoples as reasons to reconsider your own response to guidance, not simply as accounts of someone else’s past.

The tafsīr in brief

Messengers came to ʿĀd and Thamūd from every side saying: worship none but Allah. ʿĀd answered by asking who is greater than us in strength — not seeing that the One who created them is greater in strength — so a screaming wind was sent against them in days of misfortune. Thamūd were guided, but preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they earned, while those who believed and were mindful of Allah were saved.

• Examine whether an objection is helping you seek truth or helping you avoid it. Rejecting the messenger’s humanity and preferring blindness both show how people can resist guidance already given.
• Treat your abilities as reasons for humility, not guarantees of safety. ʿĀd’s power could not protect them from their Creator’s punishment.
• Keep the Hereafter in view when weighing consequences. This passage presents worldly disgrace as less severe than the punishment still to come.
• Do not let a community’s rejection decide your own response. The passage ends by drawing attention to those who believed and remained mindful of Allāh.

Until when they reach it, their hearing, their sight and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do. And they will say to their skins: why have you testified against us? They will say: we were made to speak by Allah, who made everything speak. And you were not covering yourselves lest your hearing testify against you, or your sight, or your skins, but you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do. And those who disbelieve say: do not listen to this Qurʾān and speak noisily during it, that perhaps you will overcome.

• Treat what you hear, watch, and do as accountable choices. The parts of your body involved in your actions can become witnesses, not a shield from judgment.
• Do not confuse privacy from people with concealment from Allah. Correct that assumption and your conduct now rather than relying on an appeal after judgment.
• Examine influences that make wrongdoing seem good. Approval from companions is not proof of guidance, and following them can end in bitter regret.
• Give the Qur’an a fair hearing rather than helping others shut it out. Silencing a recitation does not remove its claim on how you live.

Indeed those who have said our Lord is Allah and then remained on a straight path — the angels descend upon them: do not fear and do not grieve, but receive good tidings of Paradise which you were promised. We were your allies in worldly life and are in the Hereafter. And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah, does righteousness, and says I am of the Muslims. And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel by that which is better; then the one between whom and you was enmity will become as a devoted friend.

• Make your actions support your declaration of faith: practise the good you encourage in others.
• When opposition feels isolating, remember the promised angelic companionship and Paradise’s welcome from the Forgiving, Merciful Lord.
• Treat provocation as a moment to practise patience and choose a better response, rather than letting another person’s hostility determine your conduct.
• When an evil suggestion arises, seek Allah’s protection instead of entertaining it or relying only on your own resolve.

And of His signs are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allah, who created them, if it is Him that you worship. Whoever does righteousness — it is for himself; and whoever does evil — it is against himself. And your Lord is not ever unjust to His servants. We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?

• Let what you observe in creation lead to worship rather than admiration alone. The heavenly bodies point to their Creator, and renewed earth gives a visible reminder of His power to resurrect.
• Approach revelation willing to be guided, not looking for another objection. Rejection has happened before, but it does not weaken the Book; keep both Allāh’s forgiveness and His warning in view.
• Take responsibility for your choices rather than relying on imagined protection. Your deeds have consequences, Allāh knows what is hidden, and false objects of worship will offer no escape.
• Watch how both hardship and comfort affect your faith. Resist despair in difficulty and entitlement in relief, and keep obeying Allāh when the immediate need has passed.
• Examine the signs around you and within you with an honest readiness to accept the truth. Let them deepen your response to the Qurʾān and your awareness of meeting Allāh.
