The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens by naming itself the wise Book: guidance and mercy for those who do good — the ones who keep up the prayer, give zakāh and are certain of the life to come. Against them stands the person who buys idle talk to pull others away from Allah's way and treats it all as a joke. Believers who act on what they know are promised gardens they will never leave. The passage then points to the sky held up without pillars you can see, mountains set into the earth, every kind of creature spread across it and rain that brings up every good growing thing — and asks what anything else has ever created.

• Approach the wise Book ready to act. Let listening lead to care for prayer, giving zakāh, and choices shaped by certainty in the Hereafter.
• Examine both what you choose to hear and what you encourage others to hear. Do not make distraction or mockery a means of turning people away from Allah’s guidance.
• Keep faith joined to righteous action, and take hope from Allah’s truthful promise rather than treating lasting reward as uncertain.
• Let the world around you prompt recognition of its Creator and Provider. Reflecting on His creation should strengthen worship of Him alone.

And We had certainly given Luqmān wisdom: be grateful to Allah. Whoever is grateful is grateful for his own benefit, and whoever denies — then Allah is free of need, praiseworthy. And when Luqmān said to his son, admonishing him: O my son, do not associate anything with Allah; indeed association is a great injustice.

• Receive knowledge as a gift from Allāh rather than a reason for self-importance; let learning lead you towards gratitude.
• Do not treat thanking Allāh as doing Him a favour. Make room for gratitude because its benefit returns to you.
• Give those you love your best guidance, not only advice about worldly success. Luqmān began with worshipping Allāh alone.
• Combine care for the person you advise with clarity about serious wrongs; affection need not weaken a necessary warning.

We enjoined upon man care for his parents — his mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years — be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the destination. But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, and accompany them in this world with kindness.

• Let awareness of your mother's hardship shape the care you give her, rather than treating her sacrifices as something ordinary or owed to you.
• Give Allah first place while remaining grateful to your parents. Their right to your care does not give them authority to demand shirk.
• When refusing a demand that conflicts with worshipping Allah alone, keep the refusal specific: do not turn it into a withdrawal of everyday kindness.
• Seek guidance from those who turn to Allah, and weigh your conduct by your return to Him rather than by family pressure alone.

O my son, if it should be the weight of a mustard seed, within a rock or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you — that is of the matters requiring determination. And do not turn your cheek in contempt towards people, nor walk through the earth exultantly. Be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; the harshest of sounds is the voice of donkeys.

• Do not dismiss a hidden wrong as too small to matter. Remembering Allah's complete awareness gives a reason to choose obedience even when nobody is watching.
• Make prayer a steady commitment, and prepare to persevere when encouraging good becomes difficult rather than expecting obedience to be free of hardship.
• Check how you make others feel through your face, walk, and voice. Humility needs to be visible in ordinary interactions, not merely claimed inwardly.
• When addressing something wrong, combine moral firmness with personal restraint: uphold what is right without treating people as beneath you.

Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favours, apparent and hidden? Yet among the people is he who argues about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an illuminating Book. When it is said to them, 'Follow what Allah has revealed,' they say, 'Rather, we follow that upon which we found our fathers' — even if Shayṭān was calling them to the punishment of the Blaze. Whoever submits his face to Allah while being a doer of good has grasped the firmest handhold, and to Allah is the outcome of all matters. Whoever disbelieves, let not his disbelief grieve you; to Us is their return and We will inform them of what they did. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of what is in the breasts. We give them enjoyment for a little, then We will force them to a harsh punishment. And if you asked them who created the heavens and earth, they would surely say 'Allah.' Say: praise be to Allah — but most of them do not know.

• Notice both everyday provision and the gift of guidance when giving thanks. Gratitude acknowledges your dependence on Allah; it does not supply something He lacks.
• When inherited habits conflict with revelation, choose guidance and put it into practice. Reliable support lies in submission to Allah joined with good deeds, not familiarity alone.
• Do not let rejection or the apparent comfort of those who reject obscure the final return to Allah. He knows their hearts, and brief enjoyment does not remove accountability.
• Let recognition of Allah as Creator shape whom you worship. It is inconsistent to acknowledge that everything belongs to Him while worshipping what He created.

If all the trees on earth were pens and the sea were ink, replenished by seven more seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Then the warning not to let the deceiver deceive you about Allah, and the closing āyah: with Allah alone is knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, He knows what is in the wombs, no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die.

• Do not measure Allah’s knowledge or power by human limits. Let what you cannot comprehend lead to humility rather than doubt about resurrection.
• Let the daily signs around you renew both your devotion to Allah alone and your awareness that He knows your actions.
• Practise patience when life is difficult and gratitude when it becomes easy. Relief should deepen your faithfulness, not end the devotion you showed during danger.
• Do not postpone responsibility because family support, present comfort, or tomorrow’s opportunities seem secure. Allah’s promise is certain; your own future is not yours to know.
