The tafsīr in brief

Indeed We sent Nūḥ to his people: warn your people before a painful punishment comes to them. He said: O my people, I am to you a clear warner — worship Allah, fear Him, and obey me, so He may forgive your sins and delay you to an appointed term. He then describes calling them night and day, only for them to flee further, and how he called them openly and secretly, yet they persisted, covering their ears with their fingers and wrapping themselves in their garments in stubborn refusal.

• Treat a clear warning as an opportunity to return to Allah. Hope in forgiveness should lead to worship and obedience now, not confidence that there will always be more time.
• Do not measure sincere effort only by people's immediate response. Nūḥ عليه السلام continued obeying Allah even while his people moved further away.
• Notice when discomfort becomes deliberate avoidance. Refusing to hear a true reminder can shut out the very invitation that calls you toward forgiveness.
• Be willing to vary how you offer a reminder. Public teaching and private conversation can both serve the same call to truth.

Nūḥ told them: ask forgiveness of your Lord, indeed He is ever Forgiving; He will send rain in abundance, give you increase in wealth and children, and provide gardens and rivers. What is with you that you do not attribute grandeur to Allah, when He has created you in stages? He created the seven heavens in layers, placed the moon in them as a light, and made the earth for you as a carpet, that you may walk on its broad paths.

• Turn to Allah for forgiveness in times of need. Nūḥ ﷺ connects repentance with provision, joining hope in Allah's forgiveness to people's everyday concerns.
• Let reflection on your own creation and the heavens lead beyond observation to reverence for their Creator.
• Keep resurrection in view when thinking about human life: earthly origins and death do not tell the whole story.
• Notice the mercy behind ordinary things, including a habitable earth and the ability to travel, and respond with gratitude.

Nūḥ said: My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed one whose wealth and children increased him not except in loss. They have devised a great plot, saying: do not leave your gods — do not leave Wadd, nor Suwāʿ, nor Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, nor Nasr. And they have led many astray; so increase, my Lord, the wrongdoers only in error.

• Do not treat wealth or a large family as evidence that someone’s religious guidance is true. Consider whether their influence leads towards obedience to Allah.
• Look beyond confident religious slogans to what they actually ask you to do. A call presented as defending guidance can instead protect worship of others besides Allah.
• Keep respect for righteous people distinct from worship. The account of these idols warns that later generations can turn veneration into something very different.
• Take responsibility for the direction in which you influence others. Resistance to truth becomes more harmful when it encourages many people to follow it.

Because of their sins they were drowned and made to enter a Fire, and they found none besides Allah to help them. And Nūḥ said: My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any disbelievers, for if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and beget none but the wicked and disbelieving. My Lord, forgive me, my parents, whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and believing women, and do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.

• Take persistent wrongdoing seriously: neither worldly protection nor other people can shield someone from Allah's judgment.
• Do not turn Nūḥ's final prayer into permission for impatient judgments about others. Its severity belongs to the conclusion of an exceptionally long, patient mission.
• Consider how your influence affects others and the next generation; the harm described here spreads beyond those who first reject the truth.
• Ask for your own forgiveness while also remembering your parents and believers beyond your immediate circle.
