The tafsīr in brief

Alif Lām Rā — these are the verses of the wise Book. Then the astonishment is named directly: was it strange to the people that Allah revealed to a man among them, 'warn mankind and give the believers good news that they have a sure footing with their Lord'? The disbelievers called this plain sorcery.

• Consider the wisdom of revelation rather than letting a hostile label decide your response to it.
• Do not treat a messenger’s humanity as an objection to revelation: Allah’s established way is to send human messengers.
• When sharing a reminder about faith, make room for both accountability and hope rather than presenting only one side.
• When facing discouragement, remember the promised reward with Allah and keep giving attention to good deeds.

Before any argument about prophethood, the surah establishes the Creator through what everyone can see: six days of creation, the throne, the sun a shining light and the moon a measured light, so that you may know the number of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create this except in truth.

• Direct your worship to Allah, and do not treat any intercessor as having authority independent of His permission.
• Let the certainty of returning to Allah shape today's choices: faith and good deeds matter, and their reward will be just.
• When you mark a date or notice the changing light, pause to recognise the purposeful order behind the routines you rely on.
• Do more than collect observations about creation; ask how what you notice can make you more mindful of Allah.

The tafsīr in brief

Those who do not expect to meet Allah and are satisfied with the life of this world, resting in it, and those heedless of His signs — their home is the Fire because of what they earned. But those who believe and do righteous deeds, their Lord guides them by their faith; rivers will flow beneath them in the Gardens of Bliss. Their call there is 'Glory be to You, O Allah', their greeting is 'Peace', and their closing word is praise to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.

• Enjoy worldly blessings without letting comfort make you forget meeting Allah. Measure your choices by accountability, not simply by how secure life feels.
• Let attention to Allah’s signs lead to action: make room both to reflect on His creation and to follow His commands.
• Keep joining faith with righteous deeds, even when their reward is not visible now. This passage places lasting hope in Allah’s guidance and promise.
• Let the picture of Paradise shape what you value in speech: glorifying Allah, offering peace, and expressing praise rather than causing harm.

If Allah hastened evil for people the way they hasten good, their term would already be finished. When harm touches a person, he calls on Allah lying on his side, sitting, or standing; but once We remove his harm, he goes on his way as if he never called Us to remove a harm that touched him. This is how the deeds of those who overstep are made to seem good to them.

• Guard your words when angry. Do not turn frustration into prayers against yourself, your family or your possessions.
• Do not treat being spared immediate consequences as proof that your conduct is acceptable. Use the opportunity to leave wrongdoing.
• Let relief begin a period of gratitude, not end your relationship with prayer. Aim for patience during difficulty and thankfulness when it passes.
• If you notice yourself forgetting Allah after receiving help, address your present heedlessness rather than assuming your earlier prayer was false.

We destroyed generations before you when they wronged, though their messengers came to them with clear proofs, and they were not going to believe. This is how We repay the guilty people. Then We made you successors in the land after them, to see how you would act.

• When guidance challenges your behaviour, examine your response rather than assuming that hearing the evidence is enough.
• Learn from earlier people's failures without feeling superior to them. Their story directs attention to your own choices.
• Treat what has been entrusted to you as a responsibility to fulfil, not merely an advantage to enjoy.
• Be cautious when worldly opportunities look attractive: ask how they will affect your obedience before pursuing them.

The demand was not for proof but for a revelation that would leave their idols alone. The answer is that the Messenger ﷺ cannot change it of his own accord — he has lived a lifetime among them before it, and they know his character. The idols they worship neither harm nor benefit, and they call them intercessors with Allah without any authority.

• Let revelation challenge your preferences rather than asking it to accommodate them. Consider the evidence offered for its truth instead of judging it only by whether it feels agreeable.
• Be careful about what you attribute to Allah. A reassuring religious claim, such as claiming that an idol will intercede, does not make it true.
• Do not mistake delayed judgment for approval. Use the time Allah allows to respond to guidance rather than treating the delay as permission to persist.
• Do not make faith conditional on Allah providing the particular sign you demand. Recognise the limits of your knowledge and leave the outcome to His wisdom.

When We let people taste mercy after hardship touches them, they scheme against Our signs. It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea, until you are in ships, sailing with a favourable wind, rejoicing in it — then a violent wind comes, waves arrive from every side, and they think they are surrounded. They call on Allah sincerely, promising: 'If You save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful.' But when He saves them, at once they commit injustice on earth without right.

• Recognise Allah’s mercy in ordinary ease, not only in dramatic rescue. A safe journey and relief from hardship both call for gratitude.
• Carry the sincerity of a difficult moment into life afterward. Let a promise made in distress become steady, just conduct when comfort returns.
• Do not treat continued comfort as permission to do wrong. Your deeds are recorded, and returning to Allah matters more than a temporary advantage.

The likeness of worldly life is that of water We send down from the sky which mixes with the earth's plants, from which people and livestock eat, until the earth takes on its ornament and is beautified, and its people think they have full control over it — then Our command comes by night or day, and We make it a harvested field, as if it had not flourished the day before. This is how We detail the signs for a people who reflect.

• Enjoy the benefits of worldly provision without treating them as proof that you control what happens next.
• Make plans with humility: present success cannot guarantee tomorrow’s outcome.
• Do not make passing pleasures the foundation of your security; even what feels firmly established can disappear completely.
• Let changes in the natural world prompt reflection on your own life, rather than noticing only their beauty or usefulness.

Allah calls to the Home of Peace and guides whoever He wills to a straight path. For those who did good is the best reward, and even more; neither dust nor humiliation will cover their faces — they are companions of Paradise, remaining there forever. But those who earned bad deeds — the repayment of a bad deed is its equal, and humiliation will cover them, with no one to protect them from Allah, as if their faces were covered with pieces of the darkest night.

• Let Allah’s invitation to lasting peace shape your priorities rather than treating temporary worldly success as your final goal.
• Keep faith and righteous action together, while receiving the promise of reward with gratitude rather than a sense that Allah owes you His greatest gifts.
• Balance hope with accountability: Allah multiplies good, but never multiplies the repayment of an evil deed beyond its equal.
• Treat the invitation to Paradise as a call that matters now. The two lasting outcomes give present choices a significance beyond immediate comfort or approval.

On the Day We gather them all, We will say to those who associated others with Us: 'Stay in your places, you and your partners.' Then We will separate them, and their partners will say: 'You never used to worship us.' Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you — we were unaware of your worship. There, every soul will be tested for what it did before, and they will be returned to Allah, their true Master, and what they invented will abandon them.

• Direct worship to Allah alone; being devoted to something does not make it able or willing to defend you before Him.
• Let Allah’s knowledge matter more than gaining others’ approval. No agreement between people can change what He witnesses.
• Take responsibility for your choices now instead of trusting someone else to carry their consequences.
• Examine what gives you confidence about the Hereafter: invented assurances cannot replace turning to Allah, the true Master.

Say: 'Who provides for you from the sky and the earth, or who controls hearing and sight, and who brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living, and who directs every affair?' They will say, 'Allah.' Then say, 'Will you not then fear Him?' That is Allah, your true Lord — what is beyond truth except error? Say: 'Is there among your partners anyone who begins creation, then repeats it?' Say: 'Allah begins creation, then repeats it.' Say: 'Is there among your partners anyone who guides to the truth?' Say: 'Allah guides to the truth.' Most of them follow nothing but assumption, and assumption avails nothing against the truth.

• Let gratitude shape worship: recognising Allah as the source of provision and the senses should affect whom you worship, not remain an admission without action.
• Take the warning about defiant disobedience seriously. Do not confuse knowing a true answer with responding to Allah in faith.
• Judge claims to worship by real power and guidance, not by attachment to supposed partners that cannot create or guide as Allah does.
• Examine the basis of your convictions rather than treating familiar assumptions as truth, remembering that Allah knows your actions.

This Qur'an could not have been produced by anyone other than Allah; rather it confirms what came before it and explains the Book, without doubt, from the Lord of all the worlds. Or do they say he invented it? Say: 'Then bring a surah like it, and call on whoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful.' In fact they denied what they could not encompass in knowledge, whose interpretation had not yet come to them. Those before them denied likewise, so see how the wrongdoers ended. Among them are those who will believe in it, and among them are those who will not, and your Lord knows best the corrupters.

• Ground confidence in the Qurʾān in its guidance and the evidence presented for its divine origin, rather than in how loudly people praise or mock it.
• When a passage is unfamiliar, identify what you do not understand and learn before reaching a verdict.
• Read accounts of earlier deniers as warnings to examine your own response to truth, not merely as stories about other people.
• Do not make people’s acceptance or rejection the measure of revelation’s truth; remember that Allah knows best who the corrupters are.

The Prophet ﷺ is told to answer denial plainly: 'My deeds are mine and your deeds are yours.' Some people listen without taking anything in and look without seeing, and Allah wrongs no one — people wrong themselves. Every nation is sent a messenger, and judgement between them is just. When they ask when the promise will come, the answer is that no one can hurry it or hold it back, and nothing is gained by wanting punishment sooner: on that Day a wrongdoer would give away everything on earth to be spared.

• Take responsibility for your response to guidance. Simply hearing or seeing evidence is not enough; engage with it honestly rather than blaming the messenger or Allah for your refusal.
• Keep the return to Allah in view when justice seems delayed. This life is brief, and fair judgment does not depend on your living to see every consequence.
• Use the time available to respond to the warning rather than demand a deadline. Not knowing when punishment will arrive is no reason to postpone taking your actions seriously.
• Do not treat possessions as protection from accountability. Everything belongs to Allah, and preparing to return to Him matters more than having wealth you would later wish to surrender.

The Qur'an is described as instruction from your Lord, healing for what is in the chest, and guidance and mercy for believers — something worth more joy than anything people gather. No one may declare things lawful or forbidden on their own authority. Nothing escapes Allah, down to the weight of an atom, and those close to Him have no fear and no grief. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him alone, so the claim that He has taken a son is rejected, and those who invent lies about Allah are warned that their comfort here is brief.

• Approach the Qur’an as guidance that should reach your heart, not just information to collect. Let gratitude for Allah’s mercy matter more than acquiring possessions.
• Pause before attributing a rule or belief to Allah. Neither familiar customs nor confident claims replace His permission and sound evidence.
• Let Allah’s knowledge encourage care in private deeds and steadiness under criticism. Seek closeness to Him through belief and mindfulness, not public standing.
• Use ordinary moments of rest and daylight to notice Allah’s provision. Build trust on His real ownership and care, rather than unsupported assumptions.
• Do not treat temporary comfort as proof that a path is right. Measure success with the return to Allah in view.

Recite to them the news of Nūḥ, when he said to his people: 'If my staying and my reminding you of Allah's signs is too much for you, I rely on Allah; decide your plan together with your partners, then carry it out against me without delay.' If you turn away, I have asked no reward from you; my reward is only with Allah, and I have been commanded to be among those who submit. They denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and made them successors, and drowned those who denied Our signs — see how those who were warned ended. Then We sent messengers after him to their peoples.

• When doing what is right becomes unpopular, keep your purpose anchored in Allah rather than in people’s approval or rewards.
• Do not mistake the strength of opposition for control over the outcome. Nūḥ’s story gives courage to remain faithful when the pressure feels overwhelming.
• Read accounts of earlier rejection as warnings for your own response to guidance, not merely as stories about other people.
• Be willing to reconsider an earlier refusal when clear evidence comes. Persisting in rejection can harden the heart rather than protect it.

Mūsā and Hārūn عليهما السلام are sent to Firʿawn and his chiefs with clear signs, and are met with arrogance and the charge of sorcery. Firʿawn gathers his best magicians, and Mūsā tells them Allah will undo what they have brought, because Allah never puts right the work of those who spread corruption. Only a few young people believe, afraid of what Firʿawn will do to them, and Mūsā tells them to rely on Allah. The two brothers are told to settle their people in houses in Egypt, make those houses places of prayer, and give the believers good news. Mūsā then prays against Firʿawn's wealth and hardened refusal, and is told his prayer is answered and to stay steady on the straight path.

• Examine evidence rather than dismissing a message because it challenges familiar customs or threatens your position. Pride can turn a clear truth into something a person refuses to face.
• Do not confuse an impressive display with truth. Judge what is presented by its substance, remembering that the work of corruption cannot secure lasting success from Allah.
• When faith is under pressure, combine reliance on Allah with prayer and practical protection. Seeking a safer place to worship is not the same as abandoning worship.
• Do not treat wealth as proof of Allah’s approval or answered prayer as permission to relax your obedience. What matters is how you use what you receive and whether you remain upright.

As the sea closes over him, Fir'awn says: I believe there is no god but the One the Children of Israel believe in. The answer comes: now? when you disobeyed before and were of the corrupters. Today We will preserve your body so that you may be a sign for those after you. The tyrant who claimed lordship becomes a museum exhibit.

• When hardship seems to leave no way forward, remember that the Children of Israel's danger did not put them beyond Allah's help.
• Do not treat repentance as something safely reserved for the end of life. Turn back while choosing to believe and obey is still possible.
• Do not mistake earthly power for lordship: Firʿawn's lifeless body became evidence against his own claim.
• Move beyond merely noticing Allah's signs. Pay attention to the warning they carry and let it shape your choices.

We settled the Children of Israel in a good, honest dwelling and provided them with good things; they did not differ until knowledge came to them. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgement concerning what they differed over. If you are in doubt about what has been revealed to you, ask those who have read the Scripture before you; the truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters, and never be among those who deny Allah's signs, or you will be among the losers. Those against whom your Lord's word has come into effect will not believe, even if every sign came to them, until they see the painful punishment.

• Treat knowledge as a responsibility, not a reason to feel superior. When disagreement arises, examine how you are responding to what you already know.
• Let confirmation of the revelation strengthen your trust and your response to Allah’s signs; recognising evidence is not enough if you then reject it.
• Do not keep postponing your response to truth while demanding more signs. The passage warns against waiting until punishment makes the truth unavoidable.
• Do not treat comfort and provision as proof that a community is free from spiritual danger. Blessings should encourage gratitude and care, not complacency.

Was there any town that believed and its faith benefited it — except the people of Yūnus? When they believed, the punishment of disgrace was lifted from them. Then the principle: had your Lord willed, everyone on earth would have believed — will you then compel people until they become believers? The surah that lists rejection ends by forbidding coercion.

• Let warnings move you to humble repentance rather than waiting for consequences to arrive.
• Do not assume that a community cannot change: the people of Yūnus turned to Allah together despite their earlier rejection.
• Share faith without coercion. Your responsibility to explain does not give you control over another person's belief.
• Care about people's guidance without letting their rejection consume you with grief; guidance belongs to Allah.

It is not for any soul to believe except by Allah's permission, and He places doubt upon those who do not use reason. Say: 'Look at what is in the heavens and the earth.' But signs and warnings do not benefit a people who do not believe.

• Do not use Allah’s permission as an excuse to avoid responsibility: examine whether you are honestly using your reason.
• Make reflection on creation part of ordinary life. You do not need advanced learning to consider what the world around you reveals.
• When sharing the message, offer reminders and point to Allah’s signs without assuming you can make another person believe.
• Alongside seeking evidence, examine your willingness to receive it: signs and warnings do not benefit someone who refuses to believe.

Do they wait for days like those of the nations who passed before them? Say: 'Then wait, I am waiting with you.' Then We save Our messengers and the believers — it is a duty upon Us to save the believers. Say: 'O people, if you are in doubt about my religion, I do not worship what you worship besides Allah, but I worship Allah who will take you in death, and I have been commanded to be among the believers,' and to set my face toward the true religion, upright, never among the polytheists. Do not call besides Allah on what can neither benefit nor harm you; if you did, you would then be among the wrongdoers. If Allah touches you with harm, none can remove it but Him; if He intends good for you, none can turn back His bounty — He grants it to whoever He wills of His servants, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

• Let the fate of earlier nations awaken seriousness, while Allah's promise to save believers strengthens patience during opposition.
• Do not make devotion depend on other people's approval: pair a clear commitment to Allah with an intention directed only to Him.
• Direct your prayers to Allah rather than powerless objects of worship, remembering that ultimate control of relief and bounty belongs to Him.
• Do not let the seriousness of past sins keep you from repentance: Allah's forgiveness and mercy are open to those who turn back to Him.

Say: 'O mankind, the truth has come to you from your Lord; whoever is guided is guided only for himself, and whoever strays only strays against himself, and I am not a guardian over you.' Follow what is revealed to you, and be patient until Allah judges, for He is the best of judges.

• When sharing the truth, distinguish between conveying it faithfully and making someone believe. The latter is not yours to control.
