The duʿā before the salām
Four things to seek refuge from, then anything you want.
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābi Jahannam, wa min ʿadhābil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-maḥyā wal-mamāt, wa min sharri fitnatil-Masīḥid-Dajjāl.
O Allah, I take shelter with You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the false messiah.
Why it is said here
The Prophet ﷺ told them to seek refuge from these four before the salām. Then, he said, 'let him choose whatever supplication he likes' — so this is the door in the prayer that is left open for your own words, about your own life. Many people never use it.
