The mission complete
In the final year the tone turns to completion and farewell; the Companions understood it as a sign that his time was near.
ʿArafah during the Farewell
After the sermon, Sūrat al-Māʾidah 5:3 was revealed: today Allah had perfected the religion, completed His favour and chosen as religion. The book reports that ʿUmar cried and explained that after perfection comes decline. The verse’s revelation at ʿArafah is authenticated; ʿUmar’s words here are preserved as the source’s report and should not be confused with the wording of the verse itself.
The report of ʿUmar and the Jewish man establishes both the timing (ʿArafah, on a Friday, during the Farewell Pilgrimage) and the weight of the āyah as the completion of revealed law.
Ibn ʿAbbās read An- as a sign his life was ending
The conquest means the opening of . It settled the matter between the Prophet and his people that other tribes had been watching.
Ibn ʿAbbās understood the victory followed by this command as a sign that the Prophet’s life was nearing its end. The completion of his mission called for turning to Allāh, not self-congratulation.
This citation establishes the interpretation, not a precise revelation year.
