They ask you
Real questions from real people, friendly and hostile, were answered by revelation, so the Qur'an speaks to everyday life.
, advised by the rabbis of Yathrib, asked about the soul
Ibn Masʿūd reported a question about the soul in . Ibn Kathīr explains that the Makkan verse may have been revealed again there, or that the Prophet was inspired to answer with the already revealed verse.
They asked about the young men of the cave and Dhul-Qarnayn
Ibn Kathīr explains that these young men fled from their people to protect their religion because they feared persecution. Their refuge was a cave in a mountain, where they hid. Their prayer asked not only for mercy and kindness, but also to be concealed from their people and for their situation to have a good outcome. Allah caused them to fall asleep upon entering the cave, and they remained asleep for many years. After they awoke, one of them went out with silver coins to buy food. The two groups mentioned in this passage disputed about them, and the calculation concerned how long they had stayed in the cave.
Ibn Kathīr explains that plans for the future should be referred to Allah’s will because He knows the unseen and what will happen. He links this teaching to the Prophet promising to answer a question about the people of the Cave the next day, after which revelation was delayed for fifteen days. If someone forgets to say “if Allah wills,” they should say it when they remember. Ibn Kathīr explains that Ibn ʿAbbās allowed saying it even much later to follow this practice, not to cancel a broken oath or remove the duty to make amends for it. The closing guidance teaches turning to Allah for the right answer when asked about something one does not know.
Ibn Kathīr connects this question to an effort by the disbelievers of to test the Prophet . They sent word to the People of the Book, asking for information they could use for that purpose. The People of the Book suggested asking about a man who had traveled widely across the earth, some young men whose story was unknown, and the soul. Ibn Kathīr presents this background before recounting Dhul-Qarnayn’s story and states that Sūrah Al-Kahf was then revealed.
Questions in : new moons, spending, the sacred months, orphans
The question about the new moons is answered not with an explanation of their nature but of their benefit — timing for worship and daily life — redirecting attention from curiosity to purpose, just as the āyah redirects an old superstition about entering houses from the back toward the real substance of righteousness: .
Revealed after a raid in which fighting occurred during a sacred month, the āyah weighs the sin of that fighting against the far greater harm of turning people from and expelling them from the Sacred Mosque, showing that no single act should be judged in isolation from its context.
This is the first of the Qurʾān's staged āyāt on wine, acknowledging some benefit alongside greater sin, before its later, more decisive prohibition — a gradual method that spared the early community sudden upheaval.
Khawlah bint Thaʿlabah pleaded over her husband's harsh oath
Ibn Kathīr identifies the woman as Khawlah bint Thaʿlabah . ʿĀʾishah could not hear every part of her complaint despite being nearby, and praised Allah, whose hearing encompasses all things.
Ibn Kathīr reports that Aws ibn al-Ṣāmit pronounced in anger. Khawlah sought judgment from Allah and His Messenger , and revelation concerning the couple came before she left.
Ibn Kathīr explains that this ordered progression follows the pattern of other expiations: the obligation moves to a more accessible form according to the person’s ability, rather than personal preference.
