The year

Returning from the expedition against Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, a quarrel at the water revived tribal loyalties and ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy said the words Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn records. On the same journey ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها was left behind and brought back by a Companion, and the hypocrites built a month of slander out of it. The Qur'an cleared her by name from above seven heavens, and set the rules that still govern how Muslims handle an accusation: four witnesses, think well of your own, and do not repeat what you cannot prove.

In Dhū al-Qaʿdah he set out with fourteen hundred for ʿumrah, in iḥrām, with no army. Quraysh blocked the road. Under the tree the Companions pledged to the death — the pledge of riḍwān — and then a treaty was written with terms that looked humiliating: go home this year, the basmalah struck out, his title struck out, and anyone fleeing Makkah for Madinah to be returned. ʿUmar رضي الله عنه objected openly. The Qur'an called it a clear victory.

It was. With the fighting stopped, people met and listened, and more entered Islam in the two years after Ḥudaybiyah than in all the years before it. The letters to Heraclius, Chosroes, the Negus and the others went out in the same period.

The slander of ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها (al-ifk)

5–6 AH · Madinah

ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها was left behind by the army while looking for a lost necklace and brought back by a companion, and the head of the hypocrites turned it into an accusation that some believers repeated. She wept for nights, and said she could only say what Yaʿqūb عليه السلام said: beautiful patience. Sūrat an-Nūr then cleared her and set the rules for accusation and slander.

The Treaty of Ḥudaybiyah

6 AH · Dhū al-Qaʿdah · Ḥudaybiyah

Fourteen hundred set out in iḥrām for ʿumrah and were stopped at Ḥudaybiyah. The terms looked one-sided: go home this year, ten years of truce, anyone who leaves Makkah for him is returned but not the reverse. ʿUmar رضي الله عنه objected openly, and the companions hesitated to shave until he ﷺ did it first on Umm Salamah's advice. Sūrat al-Fatḥ called it a clear victory — and in the two years of peace more people entered Islam than in all the years of fighting.

Chapter: Conquest, completion and farewell

Letters to the kings

6–7 AH

During the truce he ﷺ sent sealed letters to the rulers around Arabia. Heraclius questioned Abū Sufyān — still an enemy — about his lineage, whether he had ever lied and whether his followers were growing, and concluded that a prophet was due. Chosroes tore his letter up.
