The tafsīr in brief

Alif, Lām, Mīm. Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried? We have certainly tried those before them, so Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful and make evident the liars.

• Read beyond the opening letters to the challenge that follows: do not treat hardship as a contradiction of faith. Let your response show sincerity rather than relying on a spoken claim.
• Keep accountability and hope together. Do not assume wrongdoing can escape Allah, and do not forget that the meeting hoped for by believers is surely coming.
• Approach obedience as something you need, not something Allah needs from you. Your sincere effort benefits you.
• Keep joining faith with good deeds, even when conscious of past wrongs. Allah's promise of forgiveness and generous reward gives you reason to persevere.

We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents; but if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. Among the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah,' but when one is harmed for the cause of Allah, they treat the persecution of the people as if it were the punishment of Allah. Allah will surely make evident those who believe and make evident the hypocrites. And no soul bears the burden of another.

• Do not treat loyalty to Allah and kindness to parents as competing duties. Refuse a demand for shirk while continuing respectful care and righteous action.
• Do not measure the truth of faith by how comfortably people treat you. Hardship calls for steadfastness, and public claims cannot hide the heart from Allah.
• Never accept an invitation to wrongdoing because someone promises to take the blame. You remain accountable, and encouraging others to stray adds responsibility rather than removing theirs.

And We certainly sent Nūḥ to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years less fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers. But We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it a sign for the worlds.

• Do not measure faithful effort only by how many people respond. Keep doing good patiently even when results are limited.
• Offer guidance sincerely without assuming you can control another person's heart. The outcome rests with Allah.
• When rejection feels overwhelming, remember that the rejecting majority did not determine the believers' final outcome. Allah rescued Nūḥ عليه السلام and those who believed with him.
• Read accounts of earlier peoples as lessons for your own life, not merely as distant history. This rescue was made a sign for generations beyond Nūḥ's عليه السلام people.

And Ibrāhīm said to his people, worship Allah and fear Him; that is better for you, if you only knew. You only worship, besides Allah, idols, and you invent a falsehood. His people's answer was only to say, 'Kill him or burn him,' but Allah saved him from the fire; indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

• Join belief with worship, gratitude, and clear communication. Call others to Allah without treating their acceptance as something you can control.
• Let reflection on creation deepen your awareness of returning to Allah. His power calls for accountability, not the assumption that anyone can escape His judgement.
• Do not confuse force or social agreement with truth. Ibrāhīm's opponents could threaten him and unite around idols, but neither gave them lasting protection.
• Make serving Allah the direction of your choices, even when it requires change. Ibrāhīm's departure was followed by gifts of guidance and reward, not the end of his purpose.

And [mention] Lūṭ, when he said to his people, indeed you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with among the worlds. Do you approach men, and cut off the road, and commit in your meetings that which is evil? But the answer of his people was only that they said, bring us the punishment of Allah, if you should be of the truthful.

• Do not let a group’s approval make wrongdoing seem acceptable. Take seriously both harmful conduct and gatherings where nobody challenges it.
• Turn to Allah when opposition leaves you feeling powerless. Lūṭ’s distress and the arrival of help show that needing reassurance does not contradict faithful reliance.
• Examine what you support, rather than relying on your connections to righteous people. Lūṭ’s wife was not saved through her family relationship while supporting wrongdoing.
• Read accounts of past judgment as invitations to examine your own choices, not merely as stories about other people.

And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, who said, worship Allah and await the Last Day, and do not commit corruption on the earth as agents of corruption. But they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became lifeless bodies in their homes. And ʿĀd and Thamūd — their homes stand as clear evidence to you of their destruction. Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and turned them from the way, though they were people of perception. And Qārūn, Firʿawn and Hāmān — Mūsā came to them with clear proofs, but they were arrogant in the land, and they could not outrun Allah. So each We seized for his sin; among them was he upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them was he who was seized by the shriek, and among them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them was he whom We drowned. And Allah would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.

• Let belief shape your dealings with people: worship and awareness of the Last Day should lead you away from dishonest gain and harm.
• Do not assume that an appealing choice is a right choice. Use your ability to judge rather than letting attractive wrongdoing lead you.
• Receive clear truth with humility, whatever your wealth or position. Worldly influence is not protection from accountability.
• Take responsibility for your choices. These accounts direct attention to people’s own wrongdoing while affirming that Allah’s judgment is never unjust.

The example of those who take allies besides Allah is like that of the spider who takes a home; and indeed the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if only they knew. And these examples We present to the people, but none understand them except those of knowledge.

• Examine where your heart seeks ultimate protection. Something being treated as powerful does not mean it can provide the help expected of it.
• Let reliance on Allah lead to obedience, not inactivity. Ibn Kathīr’s contrasting picture of the believer joins a devoted heart with righteous deeds.
• Take worship seriously: Allah knows whom people call upon, and His might and wisdom make this a matter of accountability.
• Make understanding a goal of reading the Qur’an. When a parable is unclear, seek knowledge and reflect rather than being satisfied with hearing its words.

Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

• Let the purpose of creation shape your choices: doing good and avoiding wrongdoing matter because you are accountable to Allah.
• When you notice the order of the heavens and the earth, go beyond admiration to remembering your responsibility to their Creator.
• Ground your worship and reliance in Allah, who alone creates and controls, rather than treating created things as independent sources of security.

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer; indeed prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

• Make room for both Qur’an recitation and prayer, and share what the Qur’an teaches rather than keeping its guidance to yourself.
• When wrongdoing persists, examine the sincerity and attentiveness of your prayer rather than treating prayer as ineffective.
• Value remembering Allah as worship in itself, not only as a way to improve your behaviour.
• Let awareness that Allah knows your actions guide your choices beyond the time you spend in prayer.

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, we believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you; and our God and your God is one, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.

• Make courtesy part of how you explain your faith, not something you abandon when disagreement begins.
• Use shared belief in one God as a starting point for conversation while remaining clear about your own submission to Him.
• When you cannot verify a religious report, acknowledge what you do not know rather than rushing to accept or reject it.
• Distinguish disagreement from injustice: another person’s different beliefs alone are not a reason to abandon courteous engagement.

And thus We have revealed to you the Book, and those to whom We gave the Scripture believe in it, as do some of these [people]; and none reject Our verses except the disbelievers. And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand; otherwise the falsifiers would have had doubt. Rather, it is clear verses within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge; and none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.

• Do not treat people of another religious background as a single group: acknowledge those who sincerely recognise and accept truth.
• When faced with an allegation about revelation, examine the evidence rather than letting the allegation itself create doubt.
• Let listening to the Qur’an lead to learning its meanings and considering how its teachings affect your life.
• Approach clear evidence with honesty: these verses invite recognition of revelation and warn against covering truth with rejection.

And they say, why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord? Say, the signs are only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner. Does it not suffice them that We have sent down to you the Book which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe. Say, sufficient is Allah as a witness between me and you; He knows what is in the heavens and earth, and those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allah are the losers.

• When sharing faith, focus on explaining the message clearly rather than feeling responsible for producing extraordinary proof or controlling another person’s response.
• Make Qur’an study a place to seek mercy and reminders, not merely information or material for debate.
• Do not measure the truth of revelation by its popularity. Human rejection does not change what Allah knows.
• Examine your own response to guidance: are you honestly considering the revelation available to you, or setting fresh conditions before you will listen?

And they urge you to hasten the punishment; and if not for a specified term, the punishment would have already come to them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not. They urge you to hasten the punishment, and indeed Hell will encompass the disbelievers, on the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from beneath their feet, and He will say, taste what you used to do.

• Use the time available to turn back to Allah; do not mistake delayed consequences for permission to continue doing wrong.
• When mockery makes justice seem distant, remember that human demands do not set Allah's timing or cancel His warning.
• Take the warning seriously rather than imagining an escape from accountability: Hell is described as surrounding those who deny the truth.
• Let future accountability shape today's choices; the passage explicitly connects what people face with what they used to do.

O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me. Every soul will taste death; then to Us you will be returned. And those who believe and do righteous deeds — We will surely settle them in lofty dwellings of Paradise beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; excellent is the reward of those who labour.

• When your surroundings prevent you from practicing your faith, consider how a change of place could protect your worship rather than treating your current home as the only possibility.
• Let the certainty of returning to Allah guide your priorities: choose obedience rather than making fear of death the deciding factor.
• Give your belief a steady practical expression through righteous deeds; faith should not remain only something you say.
• When protecting your faith involves hardship or leaving familiar surroundings, keep the whole journey in view: worship now, return to Allah, and hope for an enduring home in Paradise.

Those who are patient and rely upon their Lord. And how many a creature carries not its own provision; Allah provides for it and for you, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. If you asked them who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and moon, they would surely say, 'Allah'; how then are they deluded? Allah extends provision for whom He wills of His servants, and restricts it for him; indeed Allah is Knowing of all things. And if you asked them who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its death, they would surely say, 'Allah.' Say, praise be to Allah; but most of them do not reason.

• When obedience brings uncertainty about your livelihood, pair patience with trust in the One who sustains countless creatures.
• Trust in Allah's provision without turning that trust into an expectation of wealth. The same Lord who provides also determines how much each person receives.
• Let what you acknowledge about Allah shape your worship. Recognising Him as Creator and Sustainer calls for more than a correct answer spoken aloud.
• Let the sight of rain and renewed earth prompt praise of Allah and thoughtful recognition of His power.

And this worldly life is not except amusement and diversion; and indeed the home of the Hereafter, that is the [true] life, if only they knew. And when they board the ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion; but when He delivers them safely to land, at once they associate others with Him, so as to reject what We have given them and enjoy themselves; but they are going to know.

• Use worldly opportunities without making them your final goal. Let the lasting life of the Hereafter shape what you prioritize.
• Carry sincere worship into times of safety. The One you need in danger is still the One you depend upon when life feels secure.
• Treat relief from hardship as a reason for gratitude, not as permission to forget the Giver.
• Do not judge a choice only by its immediate pleasure. Temporary enjoyment does not remove its consequences.

Have they not seen that We made a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then do they believe in falsehood and disbelieve in the favour of Allah? And who does more wrong than one who invents a lie about Allah or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?

• Let gratitude for safety lead to worship and obedience, rather than stopping at appreciation of comfortable circumstances.
• Do not treat worldly security as proof that your beliefs and choices are right. Those enjoying the sanctuary’s protection were still called to account for rejecting truth.
• Be careful about what you attribute to Allah. Speaking falsely in His name can distort the very standard by which people recognize truth.
• Remain willing to accept truth when it reaches you; avoiding invented religious claims does not excuse rejecting genuine guidance.

And those who strive for Us — We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.

• Check your purpose as well as your effort: the promise concerns striving for Allah, not merely working hard for recognition.
• Join learning to practice. Make a sincere effort to understand what is right and to act on what you learn.
• Do not measure your progress only against someone else's circumstances. Different sincere efforts can lead toward the same divine acceptance.
• Let the assurance that Allah is with those who do good encourage you to keep choosing good when it feels difficult.
