A late-Makkan surah revealed as the trial of the early believers intensified, opening with the declaration that people are not left merely to say 'we believe' without being tested. Occasion & setting

Some new Muslims, hearing of the torture inflicted on companions such as ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir's family, wondered whether their faith would spare them hardship. The surah answers directly: trial is the mechanism by which Allah distinguishes the truthful from the liars, as it distinguished believers in every nation before them.
