The tafsīr in brief

Allah swears by al-ʿaṣr — time, or the declining part of the day. An oath by something points to its immense value as a sign; time is the medium in which every human choice, gain, and loss actually happens.

• Make room to reflect on time rather than treating it as an unnoticed background to life: Allah opens the sūrah by swearing by it.
• Judge a day by the choices you made within it, not simply by how full it felt. Time contains both good and bad deeds.
• Do not wait until you feel time passing to use it deliberately. Your limited span is being spent even when you are not noticing it.

The tafsīr in brief

A blunt, universal statement — inna al-insāna la-fī khusr, 'indeed mankind is in loss.' Not some people, but the human being as such, unless an exception applies. The default condition of a life spent without direction is decline, not neutrality.

• Let this warning lead to self-examination rather than thinking only of other people's failures: the verdict includes every individual before the exception is named.
• Treat your remaining time as consequential. Consider what your daily choices are adding up to over a whole lifetime.
• Read the warning alongside the exception that follows. Its seriousness should move you to seek the way out, not conclude that escape is impossible.
• Give this short surah sustained thought rather than assuming that a short passage has little to teach.

The tafsīr in brief

Illā — except — those who believe, do righteous deeds, and counsel one another toward truth (al-ḥaqq) and toward patience (al-ṣabr). Four elements, each incomplete without the others: inner conviction, outward action, and an outward-facing duty to others in both what is true and what is hard to bear.

• Let belief shape your conduct: identify a righteous action through which you can put your faith into practice.
• Make encouragement mutual. Be ready to receive reminders about what is right, not only to give them.
• When encouraging someone toward truth, also help them persevere. Knowing what is right does not automatically make it easy to uphold.
• Use this short sūrah as a regular check on your priorities: faith, action, care for others, and endurance belong together.
