01The oath by timeāyāt 1
Allah swears by al-ʿaṣr — time, or the declining part of the day. An oath by something points to its immense value as a sign; time is the medium in which every human choice, gain, and loss actually happens.
02The verdict: humanity is in lossāyāt 2
A blunt, universal statement — inna al-insāna la-fī , 'indeed mankind is in loss.' Not some people, but the human being as such, unless an exception applies. The default condition of a life spent without direction is decline, not neutrality.
03The exception: four conditionsāyāt 3
Illā — except — those who believe, do righteous deeds, and counsel one another toward truth (al-ḥaqq) and toward patience (al-). Four elements, each incomplete without the others: inner conviction, outward action, and an outward-facing duty to others in both what is true and what is hard to bear.
