The tafsīr in brief

Four conditional clauses pile up — the sky splitting, the stars scattering, the seas bursting, the graves overturning — before the response arrives: every soul will know what it put forward and what it left behind.

• Do not mistake the familiar world for a permanent one. Let the upheaval of sky, stars, and seas put everyday concerns into perspective.
• Treat resurrection as personally relevant: those in the graves come out, and every soul faces knowledge of its own life.
• Practise honest self-examination now rather than relying on excuses that will not survive the clarity of that Day.

The tafsīr in brief

Man is addressed directly: what deluded you concerning your Lord al-Karīm, who created you, proportioned you, and fashioned you in whatever form He willed? Yet you deny the Judgement, while noble recording angels are appointed over you, knowing everything you do.

• Let the blessings you receive awaken gratitude, rather than treating Allah’s generosity as permission to remain heedless.
• Meet differences in human appearance with humility: the form each person received was Allah’s gift, not something they earned.
• Before dismissing the consequences of a choice, remember that denying accountability does not remove the keepers appointed over you.
• Keep your private conduct consistent with your public conduct; awareness of the noble recorders should encourage shyness before them and Allah.

The tafsīr in brief

Indeed the righteous (al-abrār) are in bliss, and indeed the wicked (al-fujjār) are in a blazing fire, entering it on the Day of Judgement, from which they cannot be absent. The surah closes with a rhetorical doubling — 'and what will make you know what the Day of Judgement is?' — twice, then answers: a Day when no soul possesses anything for another, and the command that Day belongs entirely to Allah.

• Let the contrast between delight and Fire move you toward obedience now, rather than leaving your own choices unexamined.
• Take accountability seriously: the warning gives no basis for treating the punishment described as something its inhabitants can simply wait out.
• Pause over the repeated question instead of letting familiar words make the Day of Judgement seem ordinary.
• Do not make family connections or worldly standing your guarantee of safety. Take responsibility for your response to Allah, whose permission alone makes any help possible.
