Sūrah Al-InshiqāqThe Splitting Open · Makkah · 25 āyāt · 4 movements

An early Makkan surah built on the same pattern as al-Infiṭār: the sky splits and obeys its Lord, the earth is spread out and empties itself and obeys its Lord — and man is told plainly that he is laboring toward his Lord, a laborious striving, and will meet Him. The surah then divides recipients of the record of deeds into those given it in their right hand, who face an easy reckoning, and those given it behind their backs, who will call for destruction and burn in a blazing fire. It closes with an oath by the twilight, the night, and the moon that mankind will pass through stage after stage, rebuking those who do not believe or prostrate when the Qur'an is recited to them.

Occasion & setting

Revealed while the Makkans openly denied any resurrection or reckoning after death, this surah answers their disbelief with the image of the sky and earth themselves submitting obediently to their Lord's command — implying that man's persistent refusal to submit is a strange exception in a universe otherwise wholly compliant.
