The tafsīr in brief

All that is in the heavens and earth exalts Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise, who sent among the unlettered Arabs a Messenger from among themselves reciting His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, though they had before been in clear error; this favour extends also to others who have not yet joined them.

• Let praise lead to gratitude: the One who rules all creation is also the One who has generously provided guidance.
• Build a balanced relationship with revelation: recite it, let it correct your character, and learn how to put its teaching into practice.
• Do not treat guidance as the possession of one people. Its first recipients were the Arabs, but the Messenger's ﷺ mission was not restricted to them.
• Do not assume that a misguided past makes learning and change impossible. Remember the first community's transformation and receive guidance with humility.

Those entrusted with the Torah who then failed to uphold it are likened to a donkey carrying volumes of books — bearing a great weight of knowledge without understanding or benefiting from it. The surah then addresses those who claim to be Allah's exclusive allies, telling them to wish for death if truthful, since they will not do so because of what their hands have sent forth.

• When learning a religious teaching, identify how to practise it. Possessing or reading guidance is not the same as benefiting from it.
• Examine your actions rather than resting on claims of closeness to Allah. Religious confidence should not become an excuse to ignore wrongdoing.
• Do not let avoiding thoughts of death become a reason to postpone putting your conduct right; avoidance cannot prevent the return to Allah.
• Review private conduct as honestly as public conduct. Allah’s knowledge includes what people cannot see, and deeds remain part of the final accounting.

The tafsīr in brief

Believers are commanded, when the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumuʿah, to hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade, and once the prayer is concluded, to disperse in the land seeking Allah's bounty while remembering Him often. The surah closes by rebuking those who, seeing a passing trade caravan or entertainment, rushed to it and left the Prophet ﷺ standing, telling them what is with Allah is better than diversion or trade.

• Arrange your business around Friday prayer rather than treating worship as something to fit in after every transaction.
• Carry remembrance of Allah into your working day; returning to earning should not mean leaving remembrance behind.
• Protect your attention during the sermon. An attractive opportunity is not a reason to abandon the reminder already being given.
• When worship seems to cost a business opportunity, remember that Allah’s reward is better and that provision ultimately comes from Him.
