The tafsīr in brief

The surah opens with a question, not a statement: have you seen the one who denies the Dīn (the reckoning, the repayment)? The answer is not a creed but a description — he is the one who pushes away the orphan and does not urge feeding the poor.

• Let belief in the Day of Judgement shape everyday choices, especially how you treat people who cannot repay your kindness.
• Care for an orphan includes both kindness and respecting their rights. Check that your actions provide both.
• Make feeding people in need something you encourage, not merely something you leave for others to notice.

The tafsīr in brief

A woe is pronounced not on those who abandon prayer but on those who pray — and are heedless (sāhūn) within it. The surah does not condemn ritual; it condemns ritual performed without attention to what it is for.

• Do not treat completing prayer as the end of self-examination. Ask whether you are giving it the care its warning demands.
• Protect both prayer’s time and your attentiveness within it. Improving one is not a reason to neglect the other.
• Keep your commitment to prayer when nobody is watching. Public practice should not conceal private neglect.
• Include prayer’s required pillars and conditions in your review of it, rather than judging its quality only by how attentive you felt.

A second fault named in the same breath as heedlessness: those who do what they do to be seen (yurāʾūn). Riyāʾ does not simply weaken an act of worship — the surah pairs it directly with denial and heedlessness as part of the same syndrome.

• Before a good deed, check what you are seeking: Allah's pleasure or people's approval.
• Care for both your prayer and your intention. An outward act of worship does not remove the need for inward sincerity.
• Do not dismiss showing off as harmless. The prophetic warning about 'lesser shirk' calls for taking it seriously.
• Let this warning lead to self-examination, not guesses about which historical person the sūrah condemns.

The tafsīr in brief

The surah closes on the word that names it: māʿūn — the small, everyday items and assistance neighbours lend one another (a cooking pot, a bucket, salt, a tool). Refusing even this smallest form of help completes the picture of a hardened, self-enclosed heart.

• Make everyday helpfulness part of your practice of faith, rather than treating it as separate from worship.
• Pay attention to both zakāh and ordinary assistance. Taking one seriously should not make you dismiss the other.
• When an easy request makes you reluctant to help, examine that reluctance. A small favour can reveal a significant problem in the heart.
