The tafsīr in brief

The seeker is commanded to take refuge in Allah under three descriptions all connected to mankind: their Lord (rabb an-nās) who sustains them, their King (malik an-nās) who owns and rules them, and their God (ilāh an-nās) whom alone they worship. The escalation moves from nurture, to sovereignty, to the right to be worshipped.

• When seeking refuge, bring to mind whom you are asking: the One who created you, owns all things, and is your God. Let the words direct your trust toward Allah.
• Deepen your refuge beyond asking for provision or help: turn to Allah as the One who governs you and alone deserves your worship.
• Do not treat awareness of temptation as enough to keep you safe. Ibn Kathīr stresses that safety depends on Allah’s protection, so answer the danger with dependence on Him.
• Alongside seeking Allah’s protection, clarify a situation that could invite harmful suspicion. The Prophet ﷺ explained who was accompanying him because he feared that Satan might cast something into the observers’ hearts.

The tafsīr in brief

Refuge is sought from the evil of al-waswās al-khannās — the whisperer who slinks back and retreats, especially at the mention of Allah — who casts his whispering into the chests of people, that is, into the heart where thought and intention form.

• Keep remembrance of Allah part of your response to temptation, rather than abandoning it when the temptation eases.
• Do not judge a suggestion only by how appealing it feels. Ibn Kathīr warns that the whisperer makes wicked deeds attractive.
• Pay attention to what is shaping your desires and intentions. Turn to remembrance of Allah when a harmful suggestion begins influencing them.
• Let awareness of whispering lead you toward Allah's protection, not toward treating the whisperer as unstoppable. The refuge sought is with the Lord, King, and God of everything.

The tafsīr in brief

The final āyah clarifies that this whisperer is not one kind of creature only — the whisperer arises from among the jinn and from among mankind. An evil companion or a false suggestion from a human being belongs to this same category of harm sought refuge from.

• Seek Allah’s protection from harmful influence whether its source is unseen or a person speaking to you.
• Consider where someone’s advice leads you. Evil counsel and bad company matter because they can encourage wrongdoing.
• Do not assume that an attractive suggestion is good: Ibn Kathīr describes the whisperer as making wicked deeds appear appealing.
• When a situation could invite harmful suspicion, offer a clear explanation rather than leaving others to guess, as the Prophet ﷺ did when identifying Safiyyah.
