The tafsīr in brief

Alif, Lām, Mīm. The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, but they, after their defeat, will be victorious within a few years. To Allah belongs the command before and after, and that day the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah.

• Read attentively: distinguish the opening letters from the historical announcement that follows, without assigning the letters an explanation not supplied here.
• Do not confuse a deadline you have chosen with what Allah has promised. Abū Bakr’s initial five-year limit was narrower than the revealed timeframe.
• In both defeat and celebration, remember that no nation possesses power independent of Allah’s decree.
• When understanding is limited, distinguish uncertainty in your own knowledge from uncertainty about Allah’s faithfulness to His promise.

They know an apparent aspect of the worldly life, but of the Hereafter they are heedless. Have they not reflected that Allah did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term? Have they not travelled through the earth and seen how was the end of those before them, who were greater than them in strength? Yet evil was the end of those who did evil, because they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock them. Allah begins creation, then repeats it, then to Him you will be returned. And on the Day the Hour appears, the criminals will be in despair. So exalt Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning, and to Him is all praise. He brings the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living, and gives life to the earth after its lifelessness.

• Do not measure understanding only by success in worldly affairs. Make room to reflect on creation’s purpose, its limited duration, and your meeting with Allah.
• Let the fate of powerful nations challenge pride in wealth and achievement. Their downfall warns against treating Allah’s signs with rejection or ridicule.
• Prepare for your return to Allah rather than relying on supposed spiritual protectors. The passage exposes both the certainty of judgment and the failure of the partners worshipped besides Him.
• Give belief and righteous deeds priority now. The final separation makes clear that present choices have consequences beyond this life.
• Join regular glorification and praise with thoughtful attention to creation. The changing day and the revival of the earth can turn familiar sights into reminders of Allah’s power and your resurrection.

And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you love and mercy; indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect. And among His signs is your sleep by night and day, and your seeking of His bounty.

• Let human abilities and differences lead you to humility and attentive observation: our shared origin and varied languages and appearances are signs worth noticing.
• Care for a marriage through more than expressions of affection. Consider whether your actions also offer rest of the heart and compassion.
• Do not overlook rest and livelihood because they are routine. Notice how sleep relieves exhaustion and how your ability to work depends on what Allah enables.
• Use the sight of rain renewing the earth to remember resurrection: the One who sustains creation can also bring you forth at His call.

And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and the diversity of your languages and your colours; indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.

• Let encounters with unfamiliar languages become occasions to reflect on Allah’s power rather than dismiss what you do not understand.
• Respect differences in language and appearance without turning them into a ranking of human groups.
• Look carefully before assuming people are all alike; individual differences may be subtle rather than immediately obvious.
• Extend your reflection on creation beyond the sky and landscape to the people you meet every day.

To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth; all are devoutly obedient to Him. He presents to you an example from yourselves: do you have among those your right hands possess any partners in what We have provided you, so that you are equal therein, sharing it as you fear one another? Thus We detail the signs for a people who use reason. But those who do wrong follow their own desires without knowledge.

• Let your dependence on Allah lead to willing obedience, rather than confusing unavoidable submission to His decree with choosing to obey Him.
• When thinking about resurrection, remember who began creation; do not measure Allah's power by human limitations.
• Check your beliefs for double standards: whatever belongs to Allah cannot also be His equal partner.
• Give clear reasoning more weight than personal preference, and recognise that guidance cannot be secured against Allah's will.

So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fiṭrah of Allah upon which He has created all people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most people do not know.

• Make worship of Allah alone a steady direction for your life, rather than an occasional concern.
• Take upbringing and religious influence seriously: they can draw people away from their original inclination toward one Creator.
• Do not treat popularity as proof of religious truth; the verse describes the correct religion even while saying that most people do not know.
• When considering changes to Allah’s created order, distinguish legitimate need from personal desire rather than assuming that wanting a change justifies it.

Turn in repentance to Him, fear Him, establish prayer, and do not be of those who associate others with Him — of those who have divided their religion and become sects, each faction rejoicing in what it has. Give the relative his due, and the needy, and the traveller; that is best for those who desire the countenance of Allah. Whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah, but what you give in zakāh desiring His countenance — those are the ones who multiply their reward.

• Make returning to Allah a lived commitment through prayer and worship of Him alone. Do not let pride in your group prevent you from recognizing religious truth.
• Keep your devotion to Allah after relief arrives. Receiving a blessing is a reason for gratitude, not evidence that every belief or practice you follow has His approval.
• Do not let changing circumstances lead you into pride or hopelessness. Recognize your responsibility for your actions while remembering that provision remains under Allah's control.
• Fulfill the rights of relatives and people in need without turning generosity into a strategy for personal return. Seek Allah's approval rather than measuring giving only by what comes back to you.
• Let your dependence on Allah for provision and life shape whom you worship and trust; no supposed partner shares His power over your beginning or your return to life.

Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of people have earned, so that He may let them taste part of what they have done, that perhaps they will return.

• Take wrongdoing seriously even when it seems private: human conduct is connected to the condition of the wider world.
• Let the consequences of your mistakes prompt repentance, rather than assuming that suffering has settled your whole account.
• Approach the history of earlier peoples as an opportunity to learn from their choices and outcomes, not merely to collect facts.
• Look for lessons both in present consequences and in earlier peoples’ outcomes, and use those lessons to renew your commitment to Allah alone.

We have already sent messengers before you to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. So set your face toward the correct religion before a Day comes from Allah that cannot be turned back. It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir up clouds, and He spreads them as He wills, and sends down rain from within them; so observe the effects of the mercy of Allah — how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Ships are also made to sail by His command so people may seek His bounty. The dead cannot hear, nor can the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs. It is Allah who created you from weakness, then made after weakness strength, then made after strength weakness and grey hair; He creates what He wills. And on the Day the Hour appears, those given knowledge and faith will say they had remained by Allah's decree until the Day of Resurrection.

• Prepare through faith and good deeds now rather than relying on future excuses. Allah rewards generously, but the Day of accountability will not reopen earthly opportunities.
• Practise gratitude that lasts beyond favourable conditions. Rain, transport, and provision are mercies to recognise, not benefits whose loss should turn you away from Allah.
• Do not treat rejection as proof that the message lacks evidence. Earlier messengers faced it too; respond humbly yourself and remember that guidance belongs to Allah.
• Let revived land and your own changing strength remind you of Allah’s power. What you observe in creation should deepen your recognition that resurrection is within His power.

And We have certainly presented to the people in this Qur'an every kind of example, but if you bring them a sign, the disbelievers will surely say, you are but falsifiers. So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, and let not those who are not certain [in faith] disturb your patience.

• Approach the Qur’an’s examples ready to learn and follow, rather than simply looking for something to dismiss.
• Do not measure faithful effort by whether you win every argument. Clear explanation and patient perseverance still matter when others reject the message.
• When doubt or mockery unsettles you, return to the certainty of Allah’s promise instead of making other people’s approval your foundation.
