Sūrah Ar-RūmThe Romans (Byzantines) · Makkah · 60 āyāt · 6 movements

Revealed at a low point for both the Muslims and their distant sympathisers, the Byzantines, this surah opens with a striking prophecy: the defeated Romans will, within a few years, be victorious, and on that day the believers will rejoice in Allah's help. It then turns to signs in creation — sleep, spouses, language and colour, the reviving of dead earth — as proof of resurrection, before closing with commands to patience and steadfastness upon the fiṭrah.

Occasion & setting

The Persians, who were fire-worshippers, had defeated the Byzantines, who were People of the Book. Quraysh, being polytheists, took the Persian victory as a sign that their own polytheism would similarly overcome the Muslims, while the Muslims sympathised with the Byzantines as fellow monotheists. The surah's opening verses predicted a reversal within a stated number of years.
