Aṣ-Ṣaff opens with all that is in the heavens and earth exalting Allah, then rebukes believers sharply for saying what they do not do, calling this greatly hateful in Allah's sight. It praises those who fight in His cause in ranks like a solid, joined structure, recalls Mūsā rebuked by his own people and ʿĪsā ibn Maryam foretelling a messenger after him named Aḥmad, and closes by offering a trade — belief and striving with wealth and self — that saves from a painful punishment, urging believers to be supporters of Allah as the disciples were for ʿĪsā.

Occasion & setting

The surah addresses believers who had expressed eagerness to know which deed was most beloved to Allah so they could perform it, only to fall short when fighting was made obligatory, prompting the rebuke that opens the middle of the surah.
