The tafsīr in brief

After the opening exaltation, believers are addressed directly and asked why they say what they do not do, and told it is greatly hateful in Allah's sight that they should say what they do not do — a rebuke connected to companions who had wished to know the most beloved deed, then fell short once fighting was prescribed.

• Let reverence for Allah shape your commitments: the One whom all creation exalts also calls believers to account for their words.
• Treat promises of time, help, or effort seriously, not only promises involving money.
• When a commitment becomes demanding, check whether your actions still match the eagerness you expressed at the start.
• Do not dismiss a gap between words and actions simply because other people overlook it; Allah’s judgment makes it a serious matter.

Allah is described as loving those who fight in His cause in a row, as though they were a single structure joined firmly together — a picture of unity, order and mutual support in contrast to the disorganised claim of the preceding rebuke.

• Keep purpose and conduct together: serving Allah's cause and acting in orderly ranks are both part of what this āyah praises.
• In shared responsibilities, aim to be dependable to others rather than treating your contribution as an isolated effort. This is an everyday application of the firmly joined structure image.
• Let stated commitment become real action. Following the rebuke of unfulfilled words, this āyah presents commitment expressed through disciplined deeds.

Mūsā عليه السلام asks his people why they keep hurting him when they already know he is Allah's messenger to them. When they persisted in turning away, Allah turned their hearts away — and Allah does not guide a people who are defiantly disobedient. Placed right after the rebuke about saying what you do not do, it warns the new community what a pattern of half-hearted obedience did to the community before them.

• Let your treatment of the Messenger ﷺ match your acknowledgment of his truth; recognizing his authority does not excuse conduct that harms him.
• Take resistance to known guidance seriously. Their choice to turn away came first, so do not treat deliberate disobedience as spiritually harmless.
• When facing hurt while doing what is right, draw encouragement from Mūsā’s عليه السلام patience rather than assuming that hardship means you should give up.

The surah recalls ʿĪsā ibn Maryam telling the Children of Israel that he is Allah's messenger to them, confirming the Torah before him, and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after him named Aḥmad — yet when that messenger came with clear evidences, they said this is obvious magic.

• Read the prophets’ messages as connected: ʿĪsā confirms earlier revelation while announcing a messenger still to come.
• Recognise the announcement of Aḥmad as evidence that Muḥammad ﷺ was anticipated, rather than treating his mission as disconnected from earlier revelation.
• When accepting clear evidence would be uncomfortable, examine your resistance instead of dismissing the evidence with a label.

No one does greater wrong than the person who invents a lie about Allah while he is being called to Islam — and Allah does not guide wrongdoing people. They want to put out Allah's light with their mouths, but Allah will complete His light however much the deniers hate it. He is the One who sent His Messenger ﷺ with guidance and the religion of truth so that it may prevail over all religion, however much those who associate partners with Him dislike it.

• When truth challenges you, examine your response rather than inventing a claim about Allah to defend your position.
• Take false speech about Allah seriously without treating it as stronger than His truth: its injustice and its ultimate weakness are both part of this passage.
• Do not make other people’s approval the measure of confidence in Allah’s message. His promise stands even when people dislike it.
• Do not confuse a community’s present smallness with the limits of what Allah can bring about.

Believers are asked whether they would like to be guided to a trade that saves them from a painful punishment: belief in Allah and His Messenger, and striving in His cause with wealth and self, which is better for them if only they knew. The surah closes urging believers to be supporters of Allah as the disciples were for ʿĪsā, some of whom believed and some of whom disbelieved, with Allah supporting the believers against their enemy until they became dominant.

• When weighing what a commitment costs, consider its lasting return—not only the wealth or comfort it requires you to give up.
• Keep forgiveness and everlasting life at the centre of your idea of success. Welcome worldly help without making it the whole measure of Allah’s reward.
• Let your stated belief shape what you actually give and do. Supporting Allah’s message calls for commitment in actions as well as words.
• Learn resolve from the disciples: make your allegiance clear and remain faithful to it when following through becomes costly.
