The tafsīr in brief

An oath by the angels arranged in rows, driving clouds and reciting remembrance — that your God is truly One. Then the heaven adorned with stars and guarded, and the challenge: ask them, are they harder to create, or those We have created? The answer to arrogance begins with a look at scale.

• Let the angels' ordered obedience shape your approach to worship. In congregational prayer, complete the front rows and stand closely together rather than treating the arrangement as unimportant.
• Direct your worship to Allah alone. His lordship includes every place and every part of creation, so devotion to Him is not confined to one setting.
• When looking at the night sky, remember both its beauty and Allah's authority over it. These verses present rebellious devils as repelled and pursued, not as independent powers to rely on.
• When resurrection seems difficult to imagine, measure the question against Allah's creation, not your own limitations. The Creator of what is greater can recreate human beings.

Allah marvels while they mock: when reminded, they do not remember; when they see a sign, they ridicule it and call it obvious magic. Then their real objection surfaces — once we are dust and bones, are we truly raised, and our forefathers too? The answer is short and total: yes, and you will be humiliated. It will only take a single shout, and at once they will be looking on.

• Do not let another person's mockery determine how seriously you receive a truthful reminder. Pause and consider what it asks you to change.
• Examine evidence rather than dismissing it with a label. Ridicule does not answer a clear sign.
• Do not measure Allah's power by what people can accomplish. Human decay is not a reason to dismiss resurrection.
• Take accountability seriously now. Denial cannot prevent the moment when people are raised and see the truth for themselves.

The disbelievers cry out that this is the Day of Judgement, and are told it is exactly what they used to deny. The command comes to gather the wrongdoers with everything they worshipped besides Allah, and to march them to Hellfire's path, stopping them to be questioned. They turn on each other in blame — one side saying 'you used to come at us from the right', the other replying that they themselves chose disbelief; no one had real authority over another, so all of them share the punishment together.

• Take accountability seriously before regret becomes useless. Neither being surrounded by companions nor relying on false objects of worship can provide rescue before Allah.
• Examine both whom you follow and how you influence others. Misleading people is a responsibility, but being a follower does not make your own choices someone else's responsibility.
• Do not let pride or attachment to familiar practices decide your response to truth. Consider the message rather than dismissing its messenger with an insult.
• Let the consequences of your deeds shape today's decisions. The warning directs attention away from excuses and towards what you actually choose to do.

Excepted from the punishment are the sincere servants of Allah — for them is known provision, fruits, and honour, in gardens of delight, facing one another on couches. A cup is passed among them from a flowing spring, white and delicious to drink, causing no headache and no intoxication of mind. Beside them are companions of modest gaze with beautiful eyes, like closely guarded eggs. Then one of them turns to speak: I had a companion who used to ask, are you really among those who confirm the reckoning? When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, will we really be brought to judgement? He says, will you look down? And he looks and sees him in the middle of the Blaze. He says: by Allah, you nearly ruined me — had it not been for my Lord's favour, I would have been among those brought there too. This is the great success; for the like of this let workers work.

• Do not let present pressure define your expectations of Allah’s reward. These sincere believers are promised not only rescue from punishment, but provision, honor, and shared delight.
• Let the details of Paradise strengthen your hope. Its pleasures are not merely copies of earthly ones: the drink has no harmful effects, and the scene includes beauty, restraint, and protection.
• Take seriously the influence of someone who makes accountability seem foolish. Resist that pressure, while remembering that steadfastness is a reason to thank Allah, not to boast about yourself.
• Measure success by what lasts. Freedom from further death and punishment is called the great attainment; let that goal shape what you work for now.

The surah puts the question directly: is that a better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqūm? It is a tree that grows in the depths of the Blaze, its fruit like the heads of devils, and the doomed will eat from it and fill their bellies with it. Then they will have a mixture of boiling water poured over it, and their return will be to the Blaze. This is contrasted with the earlier fate of the sincere servants — a warning that most of the earlier peoples went astray, and only Allah's sincere servants were saved.

• Receive Allah’s warnings seriously rather than dismissing what lies beyond familiar experience. The contrast with Paradise calls for a response, not mockery.
• Let the full outcome of a path matter in your choices. The food, drink and return to Hellfire make this a warning about lasting consequences, not a passing discomfort.
• Do not treat inherited practice as proof of truth. Examine the path you are following instead of repeating it simply because your family followed it.
• Learn from earlier communities rather than taking comfort in numbers. Respond to warnings and cultivate sincerity toward Allah.

Nūḥ عليه السلام called out, and how excellent was the One who answered — He saved him and his family from the great distress, and made his descendants the survivors, leaving his mention among later generations: peace upon Nūḥ among the worlds. This is the reward for those who do good. Yet many others were drowned.

• Bring distress to Allah while continuing patient effort. Nūḥ's عليه السلام long struggle shows that asking for help is not a failure of patience.
• Do not measure the value of faithful effort only by immediate results. This account moves from rescue to a continuing family line and honorable remembrance in later generations.
• Make faith, service to Allah, and doing good your priorities. These are the qualities the passage highlights when explaining Nūḥ's عليه السلام honor.
• Read the account with both hope and seriousness: Allah's rescue gives reassurance, while the drowning of the rejecters warns against dismissing His message.

Among Nūḥ's followers in belief was Ibrāhīm عليه السلام, who came to his father and people asking what they worshipped — false gods desired instead of Allah? He looked once at the stars and said he was sick, so they left him. He turned to their idols and said, will you not eat? What is wrong with you that you do not speak? Then he struck them with his right hand in fierce rebuke. His people came rushing toward him, and he said: do you worship what you carve, when Allah created you and what you do? They said, build for him a structure and throw him into the blazing fire. They intended a plot against him, but Allah made them the lowest.

• Care for the beliefs within your heart, not only your outward conduct. A sound heart worships Allah alone and remembers that it will meet Him, even when family and community follow another way.
• Pressure to join a group does not make its worship right. Ibrāhīm عليه السلام’s withdrawal shows the importance of keeping clear of participation in false worship.
• Examine claims about what deserves worship rather than accepting them because they are familiar. Human craftsmanship and devotion cannot turn a helpless object into the Creator.
• Do not mistake intimidation for proof or ultimate power. Allah can turn a plot against His sincere servant into the plotters’ own humiliation.

Ibrāhīm asks for a righteous son and is given a forbearing boy. When the boy reaches the age of striving, the father says: I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you — what do you see? The son answers: do what you are commanded; you will find me, if Allah wills, of the patient. Both submit, the forehead is laid down, and the call comes: you have fulfilled the vision. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.

• When leaving something behind for Allah, keep turning to Him for guidance and ask for what is righteous, not merely what replaces your loss.
• Join your intention to be patient with reliance on Allah, and let sincere words lead to action.
• Do not mistake a severe trial for rejection by Allah. This account brings together a demanding test, accepted obedience and merciful relief.
• Make faith and doing good your priority rather than recognition. Ibrāhīm’s lasting honour is presented alongside his believing service to Allah.
• Receive the blessing of a righteous family with gratitude, while taking responsibility for the choices that shape your own conduct.

Mūsā and Hārūn عليهما السلام were favoured, and We saved them and their people from the great distress, helped them so they were the victors, and gave them the clear Book, guiding them to the straight path. Peace upon Mūsā and Hārūn among the worlds. Then Ilyās عليه السلام, also among the messengers, called his people: will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Baʿl and abandon the best of creators, Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers? They denied him, so they too will be brought for punishment, except Allah's sincere servants. Then Lūṭ عليه السلام, also among the messengers — We saved him and his family, all of them, except an old woman among those who stayed behind; then We destroyed the others. You pass by their ruins in the morning and at night — will you not then reason?

• Seek guidance as well as relief. The account moves from rescue and victory to Scripture and a straight path: safety should be followed by rightly directed words and deeds.
• Measure success by faith and doing good, not by immediate approval. Allah honors these messengers beyond their own lifetimes, even when their people rejected them.
• Examine inherited worship rather than assuming it is right. Ilyās calls people back to Allah, the Lord of both themselves and their ancestors, and the passage distinguishes belief from rejection.
• Do not rely on religious family connections in place of your own response to Allah. Even marriage to a messenger did not save Lūṭ's wife when she sided with his rejecting people.
• Do not let familiarity make a warning invisible. Turn repeated encounters with signs of past judgment into occasions to reflect and reconsider your conduct.

Yūnus fled to the laden ship, the lot fell against him, and the fish swallowed him. Then the decisive line: had he not been of those who glorify Allah, he would have remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection. He was cast onto the open shore while ill, a gourd plant was made to grow over him, and his people — a hundred thousand or more — believed and were given enjoyment for a time.

• Hold accountability and respect together. Learn from Yūnus’s عليه السلام trial without using it to look down on an honoured messenger.
• Build remembrance into ordinary days. In difficulty, turn to Allah with both glorification and honest admission of your own faults.
• Do not mistake continued weakness for the absence of Allah’s care. Notice and appreciate the support that comes during recovery.
• Do not let a difficult chapter define all that follows. The passage turns toward a mission and a believing community, encouraging hope beyond personal hardship.

The claim that Allah has daughters is confronted directly: ask them — does your Lord have daughters while they have sons? Then the settled decree: Our word has already gone forth to Our servants, the messengers — they will surely be helped, and Our soldiers will be the victors. The surah closes with the three lines the salaf recited at the end of every gathering: glory to your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe; peace upon the messengers; and praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

• Do not turn personal preferences or inherited assertions into beliefs about Allah. Test claims against clear evidence, and keep your speech free of descriptions He rejects.
• Do not treat false worship as an independent power over guidance. Learn instead from the angels’ humble service: they keep their appointed places, worship, and glorify Allah.
• Measure your readiness for guidance by your response to the guidance you already have, not by promises about what you would do in different circumstances.
• Meet opposition with patience rather than demanding an immediate outcome. Allah’s promise is not cancelled by delay, and His warnings should never be treated lightly.
• Let the close of your gatherings turn attention back to Allah’s perfection, peace upon His messengers, and praise to Him.
