Gentle correction

Revelation sometimes corrected him , tenderly and in public. No man writing his own book records this, so these moments are also a sign of where the Qur'an comes from.

  1. He turned to leaders while the blind Ibn Umm Maktūm asked to learn

Ibn Umm Maktūm , an early Muslim, came urgently asking for instruction while the Prophet was speaking to a leader whose acceptance of he hoped for.

The Prophet was attending to the wealthy person in the hope that he would be guided. The correction concerns giving him attention while overlooking the willing seeker.

This seeker came to be guided by the Prophet's teaching. Ibn Kathīr draws out the wider instruction: the warning must reach noble and weak, poor and rich alike.

    ʿAbasa 80:1–10

  2. Ransom taken for the prisoners of

The captives' treatment required decisions after the fighting. Muslim records consultation with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar about ransom, followed by the Qur'anic correction discussed in al-Anfāl 8:67–68. The source describes different ransoms according to means, release without payment for some and good treatment during captivity. Its account of literate captives teaching ten children each is a historical report, not a detail established by that Ṣaḥīḥ consultation narration. Questions and follow-up answers must preserve that qualification rather than retelling the tuition arrangement as equally certain.

After , the Companions debated whether to kill or ransom the seventy-odd prisoners taken; the Prophet consulted Abū Bakr and ʿUmar , and inclined toward Abū Bakr's view of ransom, after which this āyah was revealed cautioning that captives should not have been taken before the land was fully subdued, given the risk that ransom money would tempt fighters toward worldly gain over the deeper purpose of the struggle — though Allah still permitted the believers to enjoy what they had already taken as lawful and good.

  3. His marriage to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh , ending the adoption custom

The marriage to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh after her divorce from Zayd served the specific legal purpose of establishing, by lived example, that a divorced wife of an adopted son is lawful to marry — precisely because adoption creates no true kinship.

  4. He forbade himself honey to keep peace at home

Ibn Kathīr relates the report about honey at Zaynab’s house: even a decision made to please one’s family could receive correction from revelation.

The supplied report includes the Prophet’s statement that he had taken an oath not to drink the honey again, connecting the provision about oaths to the household incident.
