The year

In Ṣafar, men of ʿAḍal and al-Qārah asked for teachers and handed them over to Hudhayl at ar-Rajīʿ; Khubayb ibn ʿAdī was taken to Makkah and killed, asking for two rakʿahs first and setting the practice for those about to be executed. In the same month about seventy reciters were killed at Biʾr Maʿūnah after being invited to Najd under a guarantee. The Prophet ﷺ made qunūt against the tribes responsible for a full month — the longest recorded grief of his life after a single event.

Banū an-Naḍīr, bound by the covenant, agreed among themselves to drop a millstone on him while he sat by their wall. He was informed and left immediately. After a short siege they left Madinah for Khaybar and Shām with what their camels could carry, and Sūrat al-Ḥashr was revealed about them.

This year answers a question students often ask: the expulsions were responses to assassination attempts and broken treaties, not to the religion of the tribes involved.
