Sūrah Al-Ghāshiyah

Has the story of the Overwhelming reached you? [Some] faces, that Day, will be humiliated, working [hard] and exhausted, entering to [burn in] an intensely hot Fire, made to drink from a boiling spring, with no food for them except a bitter thorny plant which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

• Let the warning of Judgement challenge complacency now; being humbled when that Day arrives is not itself a saving response.
• Examine what your effort serves, not just how tiring it is. Hard work in disbelief and sin is not made beneficial by the sacrifice it requires.
• Read the warning through its details: drink and food are present, yet neither offers the comfort their names might suggest. Do not soften the scene into one of ordinary provision.

[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure, satisfied with their effort, in an elevated garden, wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech. Within it is a flowing spring, within it are raised couches, and cups put in place, and cushions lined up, and carpets spread about.

• Let the promised satisfaction of the Hereafter encourage steady effort for Allah. The passage looks beyond present toil to joy at its outcome.
• Value peaceful speech as well as comfortable surroundings. Avoiding idle, sinful, and hurtful talk is a practical response to this picture of a garden free from such speech.
• When reflecting on Paradise, give attention to the details Allah mentions: flowing water and carefully described furnishings make this promise more concrete than a vague idea of happiness.

Then do they not look at the camel — how it was created? And at the sky — how it was raised? And at the mountains — how they were set firm? And at the earth — how it was spread out?

• Let the benefits you receive from creation prompt gratitude to Allah, rather than noticing only how useful those things are to you.
• Make attentive observation part of ordinary life: look above you, across the landscape, and beneath your feet instead of waiting for an exceptional experience.
• Move beyond admiration of creation to recognition of its Creator. These signs invite you to acknowledge Allah's power and His sole right to worship.

So remind, for you are only a reminder; you are not a controller over them. However, whoever turns away and disbelieves, Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment. Indeed, to Us is their return, then indeed, upon Us is their account.

• Offer the reminder without treating another person’s belief as something you must control. Keep fulfilling your responsibility without taking on what is not yours.
• Take your response to reminders seriously. The absence of human compulsion does not remove the consequences of turning away from Allah’s message.
• Let your return to Allah shape your choices now. Other people’s approval is not the final measure of your accountability.
