01The dream, and the jealousy of brothersāyāt 4–18
A boy tells his father of eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating to him. tells him not to relate the vision to his brothers lest they plot. They do plot — is thrown into the well and the shirt is returned with false blood. Yaʿqūb's response sets the tone for the entire surah: beautiful patience, and Allah is the one whose help is sought.
02The house, the temptation, and preferring prisonāyāt 23–35
The woman of the house locks the doors and calls him. His answer is a refuge in Allah and the recall of a trust honoured. He is shown a proof from his Lord and turns away. When the women of the city mock her, she gathers them, gives them knives, and their hands are cut at the sight of him. Facing exposure or prison, says: prison is dearer to me than what they call me to.
03Daʿwah in prison, before interpreting the dreamsāyāt 36–42
Two prisoners ask him to interpret their dreams. Before answering he establishes his credentials — knowledge taught by his Lord, the religion of , and — and then asks the question that reframes their situation: are separate lords better, or Allah, the One, the Prevailing? He tells them the names they worship are names they and their fathers invented; judgement belongs to none but Allah. Only then does he interpret.
04Do not despair, and no blame upon you todayāyāt 83–101
, blind with grief, says he complains of his anguish only to Allah, and sends his sons back with the instruction not to despair of the mercy of Allah — none despairs of Allah's mercy except the disbelieving people. When the brothers finally stand before the minister they had thrown into a well, his verdict is: no blame upon you today, may Allah forgive you. He then names the mechanism of his rise: whoever fears Allah and is patient — Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good.
