The pair of sincerity
الكافرون والإخلاصAl-Kāfirūn and al-Ikhlāṣ, paired in the Prophet's ﷺ regular prayers.
The Prophet ﷺ repeatedly paired these two short sūrahs: in the two rakʿahs before Fajr, in the two after Maghrib, and in the two of ṭawāf. They are two halves of one statement — al-Kāfirūn clears away what is not worshipped, al-Ikhlāṣ states Who is.
The sūrahs in this group
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite in the two rakʿahs before Fajr: Qul yā ayyuhā l-kāfirūn and Qul huwa Allāhu aḥad.
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 726'Qul huwa Allāhu aḥad is equal to a third of the Qurʾān.'
— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5013; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 811
What runs through all of them
Clearing, then declaring
Al-Kāfirūn draws the line: your worship is not mine. Al-Ikhlāṣ fills the space it made: He is One, needing nothing.
Tawḥīd in its two halves
Scholars call one the freeing from false worship and the other the affirmation of the true — the same two halves as the testimony of faith.
Short enough to never skip
Both are a few lines. That is why they became the Prophet's ﷺ habit in the voluntary prayers around the day.

Take this with you
- Pairing them is a sourced habit for the sunnah prayers around Fajr and Maghrib.
- Together they are the shahādah in sūrah form: no to the false, yes to the One.
- Al-Ikhlāṣ is described as equal to a third of the Qurʾān for its subject — Allah Himself.
