The Musabbiḥāt

المسبِّحات

The sūrahs that open by glorifying Allah — recited before sleep.

These sūrahs open with a form of the word tasbīḥ — declaring Allah free of every fault. Al-Isrāʾ opens with Subḥāna, al-Aʿlā with Sabbiḥ, and the rest with Sabbaḥa or Yusabbiḥu. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite them before lying down, and said that in them is an āyah better than a thousand āyāt.

Scholars count the musabbiḥāt as seven — al-Isrāʾ, al-Ḥadīd, al-Ḥashr, aṣ-Ṣaff, al-Jumuʿah, at-Taghābun and al-Aʿlā — but some restrict the name to the five that begin with the verb sabbaḥa or yusabbiḥu. Both countings are reported; neither adds to or removes anything from the Qurʾān.

The sūrahs in this group

What runs through all of them

  • Creation is already glorifying Him

The opening line is not a command in most of them but a report: everything already declares Allah free of fault. The reader is being asked to join what is going on.

  • Allah's power stated before anything is asked

Each opening is followed by His dominion, His knowledge, His might — the ground on which the sūrah then makes its demand.

  • Spending, sincerity and Friday

The Madinan members turn quickly to practical matters: giving wealth, matching words with action, leaving trade for the Friday prayer.

  • A settling word for the night

The Prophet ﷺ read them last thing. The group works as a closing of the day: the world glorifies Him, and you lie down inside that.

Take this with you

  • Tasbīḥ is not praise for a favour — it is clearing Allah of any shortcoming, whatever your own state.
  • Seven sūrahs, one nightly habit: a short, sourced way to end the day the way the Prophet ﷺ did.
  • The Makkan members ground belief; the Madinan members ask for money, honesty and attendance. Same opening, different demand.
  • Al-Aʿlā is the shortest of them and the easiest to begin with.
