Standing
Al-Fātiḥah, line by line
The one surah no prayer is valid without — a conversation, split in half.

Why it is said here
The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah said: 'I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant in two halves, and My servant shall have what he asks for.' When you say 'all praise belongs to Allah', Allah says: 'My servant has praised Me.' Line by line, He answers. Then at 'guide us to the straight path', He says: 'This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he asked for.' Half of Al-Fātiḥah is about Him, half is your request — and the request you were taught to make, out of everything you could ask for, is guidance.

'There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.' It is required in every unit of prayer.
Where the schools differ: The schools differ over the person praying behind an imam who is reciting aloud: the Shāfiʿīs hold that he still recites it himself, the Ḥanafīs hold that he listens and the imam's recitation counts for him, and the Mālikīs and Ḥanbalīs distinguish between the quiet and loud prayers. All agree it is recited when praying alone.
