On the dating: The sources differ over the year of al-Isrāʾ; ar-Raḥīq al-Makhtūm places it about a year before the Hijrah.

The year

After the hardest year came al-Isrāʾ: taken by night from the sacred mosque to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, where he led the prophets in prayer, and then raised through the heavens, meeting Ādam, ʿĪsā, Yūsuf, Idrīs, Hārūn, Mūsā and Ibrāhīm عليهم السلام. The five daily prayers were given there, reduced from fifty on the advice of Mūsā عليه السلام. When Makkah heard it, some who had believed turned back, and Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه said: if he said it, it is true.

At the pilgrimage seasons he went from camp to camp offering Islam to tribe after tribe — Kindah, Banū Ḥanīfah, Banū ʿĀmir — and was refused, sometimes rudely, sometimes with a demand for power after him, which he would not trade. Then six men of Khazraj from Yathrib listened, recognised what their Jewish neighbours had been expecting, and took it home.

Twelve of them returned and pledged at ʿAqabah: not to associate anything with Allah, not to steal, not to commit indecency, not to kill their children, not to disobey in what is right. He sent Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr رضي الله عنه back with them as their teacher, and through Muṣʿab whole clans of Yathrib accepted Islam in a season.

Al-Isrāʾ — the Night Journey

c. 1–2 BH · Makkah to Jerusalem

In one night he ﷺ was carried from the Sacred Mosque to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, where he led the prophets in prayer. Offered milk and wine, he chose the milk, and Jibrīl said he had been guided to the fiṭrah. In the morning Quraysh demanded proof; he described Jerusalem and their own caravans on the road, and Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه said, 'If he said it, he told the truth.'

Al-Miʿrāj and the five prayers

c. 1–2 BH

He was then raised through the seven heavens, meeting prophet after prophet, until Sidrat al-Muntahā. Fifty prayers were prescribed, and on Mūsā's عليه السلام repeated advice he returned to ask for relief until they were five to perform and fifty in reward. The last āyāt of al-Baqarah were given there.

Presenting Islam to the tribes

c. 2–1 BH · Minā

Every Ḥajj season he went from camp to camp asking who would take him to his people, because Quraysh had blocked him from delivering his Lord's words. One tribe offered support in exchange for power after him; he refused. Abū Lahab followed him through the camps contradicting him.
