01The oaths: night, day, and the creation of the two sexesāyāt 1–3
Allah swears by the night when it covers, the day when it shines forth, and by His creating male and female — establishing from the outset that creation itself is built on paired, differing realities, preparing the reader for the pairing of paths that follows.
02The two strivings: giving with taqwā, or withholding with self-sufficiencyāyāt 4–11
Human effort (saʿy) truly diverges: one gives, fears Allah, and affirms the best (lā ilāha illā Allāh and its implications) — for him ease is made easy. The other withholds, feels self-sufficient, and denies the best — for him hardship is made easy. Wealth will not save the one who falls when he perishes.
03The warning: guidance is Allah's, and the blazing fire awaits the one who denies and turns awayāyāt 12–16
Guidance to the straight way rests with Allah, and both this world and the next belong to Him. He warns of a fire that blazes fiercely, entered only by the most wretched — the one who denied the truth and turned his back on it.
04The most God-fearing: he gives his wealth only to purify himselfāyāt 17–21
The Fire will be kept far from al-atqā — the most God-fearing — who gives his wealth to purify himself, owes no one a favour to be repaid, and seeks nothing but the Face of his Lord, Most High. He is promised that he will surely be satisfied — echoing the closing promise of Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā.
